Associative Design Showcases the Best of

Refined, Contemporary Portuguese Design at

January Furniture Show 2019

20th to 23rd January, NEC, Birmingham

At January Furniture Show 2019, Associative Design presents

an eye-catching showcase of refined, contemporary Portuguese

design. Created by the Portuguese Association of Wood and

Furniture Industries (AIMMP), Associative Design seeks to

promote Portuguese design globally, exhibiting the best of

Portugal at many of the design world’s most discerning and

distinguished shows.

In today’s design sphere, the ‘Made in Portugal’ label is

attracting increasing amounts of attention and recognition;

it is a sign of quality, craftsmanship, innovation, integrity and

sustainability. A great number of contemporary Portuguese

design brands continue to build on the country’s prolific design

heritage, combining tradition with a modern-day outlook.

Despite Portugal’s relatively small population (around 10.3

million citizens), the nation’s design scene is burgeoning. With

an artistically and culturally diverse design offer, Portuguese

design is finding favour with design audiences across the world.

At January Furniture Show, visitors can expect to find an

aesthetically pleasing mix of contemporary and luxury

Portuguese design and innovation, including furniture, lighting

and objets d’art. With its stand G40 on the Pav. 2, Associative

Design’s “The Best of Portugal” showcase will focus on the

discerning consumer. Brands will display their designs across a

range of inspirational living spaces as well as Portugal’s wealth

of natural resources.

Plug-in

Modular high-tech

furniture

Designed by

Ana Fonseca, Brimet Silva

Produced by

Associative Design

“Plug-in is a versatile modular furniture

system inspired by the computational

concept of shape grammars, developed in

the 1970s by George Stiny and James Gips.

A generative shape grammar is a design

system based on rules and steps, which

allows the creation of multiple combinations

of an alphabet of pre-determined modules.

The user can customize each modular

item according to translation and rotation

movements. The multifunctional modules

explore the connection between a low-tech

material (wood) and high-tech components

(Bluetooth control systems).

Plug-in

The aesthetics were inspired by kinetic art

Modular high-tech (Optical Art), furniture conferring a motion sense to

the whole set.”

Galinha

Sideboard

Designed by

André Teoman

Produced by

Johema

“The connection of Portugal to the rooster

have always been culturally intrinsic as one

of the most iconic images of our country.

This piece portrays a part of our culture in

a sober and emotional object that creates

interactivity in its exterior and a certain

surprise effect in the interior. Like chickens,

this piece of furniture rests on its eggs.“

Armona

Sideboard

Designed by

Mário Picoito, Tiago Rato

Produced by

NAUU Design

“With a strong inspiration in the giant dunes of the

ARMONA island, at Ria de Faro, this sideboard has

a bold and avantgarde design, combined with a

mixture of materials that convey a sense of luxury

and refinement, where wood is “Lady and Queen”.

Wanting to highlight the noblest of materials -

wood - this piece was created with an extremely

geometric design but at the same time simulates

the waves of the sea, as well as those created by

the wind in the dunes. Covered with 388 cubes of

wood lacquered with intense matt and a foil-footed

of copper with high-gloss lacquer, this piece easily

becomes the center of attention in any space in

which it is inserted, as it reflects the vast experience

of our craftsmen and the most traditional

woodworking techniques used.”
