AKFS - Finding
new ways of working
After six weeks of lockdown the
management team at AKFS were able
to review the government health and
safety guidelines; and after much hand
washing plus a shift system, the company
found a way that it could safely return to
doing what it does best - building light
commercial vehicles for a range of market
sectors including recovery and logistics.
It was a dark time at the end of March when
with a full order book AKFS had to close its
two manufacturing facilities in Clay Cross and
Andover, so everybody was thankful when they
were able to finally open the doors again at the
beginning of May.
Since opening, Ian Knight, Managing Director
of AKFS has been resourceful when
challenged with the coronavirus
problem; from handing over keys to
customers on a two metre pole to using
one of the light commercial vehicles
to stay in overnight when no hotels
were open. Along with Ian the staff at
AKFS have adapted and embraced the
changes that have been necessary to
continue to run the business safely.
Along with AKFS finding new ways
of working many of AKFS customers
are also having to adapt. AKFS have
had an increase in the number of
enquiries from motor dealers, who are faced
with finding safe ways of handing over or
delivering vehicles.
One of the very first vehicles delivered after
returning was an Ultra® car transporter to Cars
4 Less. It was an uplifting event after six weeks of
no deliveries and felt like the first ‘on the other
side’ moment. No better way to be back at work
than to be delivering vehicles to customers.
Cars 4 Less took delivery of the Ultra® to
enable them to offer contactless delivery of
used cars within a 100 mile radius. With their
customers finding it difficult to get out and
about, they wanted to carry on
providing cars to customers as safely
and quickly as possible.

Ian unfortunately has not been
staying so safe since we returned to
work. Several weeks ago he crashed
his bicycle and met with the tarmac
at 25mph resulting in a broken his
collar bone and four ribs. Despite the
pain he was still telling the ambulance
crew about low floor vehicles on his
way to hospital. For a short time Ian
is now grounded due to his reduced
lung function. We wish him a speedy
recovery and ask that he sticks to
four or more wheels over the coming
months and really does focus on staying
safe.

This issue we talk to industry legend John
Coupland, director at Castle Contract Hire in which
John looks back on meeting Bond girls, being a
cheap night out and hating timewasters . . . I better
get on with it then . . .
Hi John, how is life treating you at the moment?
Not too bad, we’ve got quite a lot of export orders. We were all in furlough and
lock down for a while but we’ve now got clients contacting us wanting equipment.
Glad to hear it John, let’s start with an easy one, what was your first car?
A Series II, green, Morris Minor. My grandfather gave it to me.
What a lovely present, did little John want to do when he grew up?
I wanted to go in a shipyard actually. I sort of had a boaty thing in my head so I started
there working there. I love anything to do with engines and gearboxes.
What was the first record you bought?
The Everly Brothers – Cathy’s Clown.
Can you remember where you bought it from?
Some two-bit record shop in Christchurch. I was born and lived there all my life. I saved
all my money up, I think it was about six shillings. It was top of the hit parade for about 11
weeks at the time; I remember listening to it on Radio Luxembourg.
And your first film?
Oh let me think . . . I seem to remember a film called ‘Above us the Waves’, a naval film
just after the war.
It’s a special occasion in Christchurch – where we going to eat?
In Christchurch? There isn’t anywhere special to eat in Christchurch.
OK (Makes a note to avoid Christchurch after Lockdown) What type of food are you
a fan of?
Oh I haven’t got expensive tastes; any traditional English food is good for me.
What’s your party piece?
Need to have a think about that, let me come back to that one.
It’s my round – what are you drinking?
I like a nice glass of white wine please.
No problem John, have a large one. Who’s you’re favourite TV Detective?
I don’t watch a lot of TV but I used to like Jack Regan in the Sweeney.
Who’s the most famous person you’ve rescued?
Cilla Black and Frank Bruno.

No not in the same car, both lovely people though.
Oh and Max Bygraves, I had to take his Rolls into the dealership in Bournemouth.

with new Boniface VLA
THE last time Rayan and Anya of Oasis Rescue and Recovery
were at Boniface was just over eight months ago. They
were collecting a VLA slidebed on a new 12t MAN chassis
which formed part of their ongoing expansion plans part of which
included creating a clean, modern, reliable and fuel-efficient
fleet for the business. Ever since then, the product has been
working hard and Rayan and Anya have continued to invest in their
business - adding a new depot and ordering yet more vehicles from
Boniface.
This latest addition to the fleet is a Boniface 5t VLA slidebed with
two tonne capacity 2nd car lift fitted to a new 12t Renault crew

cab chassis. Their continued investment into the business during
these difficult times reinforces their long-term commitment to the

The rugged aluminum deck of the VLA provides resistance from
rust and corrosion, keeping the vehicle looking great for much
longer than a steel bed. It also provides both increased payload
and fuel economy. One of the many standard features of the VLA is
a manually sliding 8,000lb hydraulic winch that allows the operator
to easily maintain a straight pull on the vehicle’s towing eye. The
2t capacity 2nd car lift is adjustable for both width and tire size
which means the operator can move anything from the smallest
car to the largest van. Like most Boniface slide beds, the subframe
and tipping frames are galvanized to help prolong equipment life
and the body is fitted with LED beacon, work lights and marker
lights - all of which will provide years of reliable service. As well as
the remote control, the VLA also comes with manual lever controls
housed in an illuminated control locker at the rear. Operation
of the bed is very smooth, quiet and achieved with just a single
push button on the remote or lever control at the rear making the
product very user friendly and easy to use.

winching points, low winch facility in the deck which allows
casualties to be winched onto the 2nd car lift, wrecker kit, trailer

Don’t leave it to chance!
COVID- 19 – Coronavirus - why a mix
of names. Why one minute do we
call it COVID-19 and the next time
Coronavirus, well COVID-19 is the
virus that causes Coronavirus, so no
more dribble about Coronavirus,
please?
Derek Firminger suggests that if
nothing else the COVID-19 pandemic
must force the recovery industry to
communicate more effectively.
No, but the whole pandemic,
lockdown and the overall effect
this has had on your business and
the recovery industry has to spark more
and more conversation.
So much of the talk of Coronavirus and
the impact within our industry, especially
with all the information within our trade
press, including the editorials I’ve been
writing, started to make me think. Who
within our industry stakeholder hierarchy
is responsible for what, who should report
on what, how should the independent
operator receive its information, where
should we get new guidance, where
should fresh policy come from?
The stakeholder list I’m referring to and
what have they been reporting on during
lockdown and what sort of information
have they been providing? To be politically
correct and not to be accused of
favouring anyone, in alphabetical order,
AVRO, IVR, LARO, PROF, RRRA, SURVIVE.
So firstly the three trade associations,
AVRO, LARO and RRRA. The role of the
trade association has changed over
the past 10 or so years; I have made
reference to this a number of times in
the past. A trade association was an
essential part of any industry, it was the
place to find your current legislative and
compliance information, in fact once
upon a time it was compulsory to be a
member of a trade association to apply
for some contracts, not so much today,
only because so much information is
available to everyone via the internet, so
the information they do provide to its
members or stakeholders becomes all the
more important and should ultimately be
relevant.
Regular updates
The same applies today and with
Coronavirus, with so much information
available on the net, you must ask, is it
all industry specific? No, you would have
to spend loads of time searching the net
for that, so the more specific information
you can get from your trade association
the better. Now AVRO have made a very
good job of that, with regular Coronavirus
information updates, on email circulars,
regular pages of information within
Professional Recovery Magazine and
plenty of information within their own
online magazine, plus they have been
holding video conference calls with other
interested parties. I think the industry
could say well done AVRO.
Email circulation
LARO have been providing their
members with regular updates, mainly
through email circulation. They are
slightly different as a trade association
as they concentrate their information
predominantly on London issues; you
could say it’s all in the name - ‘London
Association of Recovery Operators’. They
did a great piece of work specifically on
night-time and out-of-hours control, a
direct reaction to the grim work volumes
within the M25 caused by the Lockdown,
especially at night. I think a big shame, as
the proposal was never taken up, now I’m
sure this approach could have some longterm
benefits for everyone involved, with

a massive reduction in operating costs, a huge help in these
difficult times. The higher cost to operate in
London has always demanded higher rates and LARO sort
to insure its members were paid an enhanced rate during the
main lockdown period and where work providers were not
forthcoming with an enhanced rate, LARO stepped in and
made direct contact applying the enhanced LARO rate for its
members.
A bit off-piste here, but I think it fits well to mention those
who stepped up and paid an enhanced rate during lockdown,
and not just in London. First in with a rate enhancement
was Call Assist, not necessarily setting any precedent as I
know others that followed did so because they knew they
should and because they value their network, LV Britannia,
Green Flag, Hadleigh Breakdown Service, Nationwide
Vehicle Assistance (NVA) and Inter Partner Assistance. Rate
enhancements I know the independent network appreciated.
Guidance documents
The final trade association, RRRA, well to be honest they
have been a bit quiet, at least quiet within the regular trade
press. They produced an information piece headed ‘A time for
survival’ back in Professional Recovery Magazine April issue
322, but since then quite quiet. However, I do believe the
RRRA tend to use social media more than trade press. Now I
don’t use much social media much so best not comment, I’m
sure they have been doing there bit for their members.
Now some would say PROF is another trade association -
NO its defiantly not, it’s a Federation. The joining together
other interested stakeholders, starting with the main
independent work providers, Alliance Global Assistance, Call
assist (Start Rescue), LV Britannia Rescue and Green Flag, plus
the IVR and many others. The work PROF has done around
Coronavirus for the industry has been well publicised, from
regular Zoom conference calls to collaborating the COVID-19
guidance documents in conjunction with the IVR, to regular
job volume updates from another stakeholder Apex Networks.
The main advantage PROF has over the trade associations
is how Richard Goddard uses the political and public affairs
campaigners Tendo Consultation to assist with delivering the
strategy for the APPG for Rescue & Recovery, to then apply
pressure and to get results when information and guidance
is needed yet nothing is forthcoming. I will elaborate on that
point shortly. To keep up with all the work PROF is doing for
COVID-19 guidance and other campaign work it is doing for
the recovery industry, take a look at their website, details
below.

press is the extensive ‘voluntary’ workload
they have undertaken for the industry,
staying ahead with industry standards.
A key stakeholder in the PROF video
conferencing, they produced the IVR Key
Worker Card; such a great initiative and
well received by the industry and not just
IVR members. In addition and I’m sure
you will have read in the last magazine
the IVR are now producing a series
of COVID-19 return to work YouTube
videos, with the 3rd released last week,
Passenger Transportation Safely. Great
work by Mark Hartell IVR (ITSSAR) Cat 4
trainer and Sam Morris. Sam is the film
editor and producer. The IVR was also key
in the writing of the IVR/PROF COVID-19
guidance documents, an essential piece
of work.
By way of a quick reminder, always
follow the training your IVR approved
ITSSAR trainer has given you and if you’re
having to recover passengers as well as
the car from a vulnerable situation at the
roadside, that is once all other available
options for the passengers have been
exhausted and you’re having to move the
passengers while they stay in the disabled
car. Then please make sure you’ve carried
out your dynamic risk assessment (DRA)
and the recovery of the passengers is
only to a place of safety and not as many
thinks to recover them wherever! Oh, and
make sure your insurer knows this is a
temporary recovery measure your having
to use during COVID-19 restrictions.
SURVIVE scrutiny
This moves quite nicely onto the key
role that SURVIVE Group plays, or at least
should play. Now we must not forget all
the good work that SURVIVE has done over
the years for the industry, in producing
and managing both PAS 43 and the
industries Best Practice Guide. However,
it is once more coming under some
scrutiny. I say once more as it has always
been openly criticised for the structure
within the SURVIVE Executive Group with
the AA and RAC playing a pivotal role in
the decision making and often favouring
actions that suits the patrol lead business
model they both operate.
As soon as the industry could see
the impact COVID-19 was going to have
and the rescue restrictions it would
have to adhere to, especially once the
Government had announced the lockdown
measures on 23rd March and introduced
the 2m social distance rule, it was clear
this would have a significant impact on
the day to day safety environment of our
recovery staff and the general public. We
must not forget the general public as your
staff have to interact with them on every
job. Both PROF and the IVR produced
their COVID-19 emergency guidance
protocol by 25th March, just two days
into lockdown for an industry key to the
country’s transport systems and supply
chains. The first notification from SURVIVE
was not until 7th April, 13 days later, is that
right?
The very same
guidance information
was provided by
SURVIVE but described
in a different way, the
IVR chose to make it a
simple line diagram with
additional notes, while
SURVIVE Group provided
a literal description,
no problem with that
just a different way of
explaining the guidance.
There was however
one main difference;
SURVIVE chose to
describe and agree a
guidance procedure for a trailer or full lift,
where the IVR procedure was only ever
providing guidance for a full lift.
Legal position
The guidance on moving passengers
remaining in the trailer has since been
removed, with the following statement on
the SURVIVE website, 10th June:
“SURVIVE understands that DfT believe
the practice of carrying passengers in
casualty vehicles whilst being recovered
on trailers is illegal. We are therefore
seeking clarification on this issue. In the
meantime reference to this practice has
been removed from the Coronavirus Safe
System of Work, and as soon as we have
absolute clarity on the legal position we
will provide a further update.”
I’m not sure why I would think this, but
emergency guidance to leave passengers
in the car when being towed on a trailer,
could that ever be good guidance,
was that measure only ever to suit the
recovery process of using an RDT, and
who might benefit from such guidance?
I’m sure the reason that DfT got
involved at such a late stage in the use
of this temporary guidance was because
Scottish Police decided to take a firm ‘no
tolerance’ stance on recovering people in
vehicles on recovery vehicles, the Scottish
Police were at the same time pushing it as
an issue into the wider UK Police areas, so
involving England, Ireland and Wales.
As an industry we look to SURVIVE for
approval and guidance on specific safety
related matters, with any decision being
fully supported by those who sit within
that SURVIVE Executive group as well as
those within the three sub-groups. The
remit of the SURVIVE Executive is:
“The SURVIVE Group Executive
has responsibility for setting the
strategic direction of SURVIVE and
delegating responsibility for taking
forward the development of policy and
implementation to the three working
groups.”
Part I have already mentioned above.
Within that executive group it is not
only the AA & RAC, but also Green Flag,
Highways England, AVRO, RRRA and the
National Police Chief’s Council (NPCC).
I chose to emphasise this point as the
NPCC are part of this group because,
the Best Practice Guide and PAS 43 is
controlled, monitored, managed by
SURVIVE Group. The COVID-19 emergency
protocol temporary measures, the
temporary measures the recovery
industry are currently operating to,
reflects a procedure within PAS 43 for
the movement of disabled passengers
and is therefore an approved process ‘an
industry best practice’ all be it only used
in special cases and for the movement
of a disabled person. Now I think the
Coronavirus pandemic is a special
case. So how can we have an approved
procedure, now being questioned by
any Police force? Especially when the
NPCC must have been part of the original
decision making and including it into PAS
43.
Set the standard
As this COVID-19 emergency protocol
was now being questioned by the Police,
suggesting the practice is illegal, several
groups and this included PROF, asked
SURVIVE to contact the NPCC and seek
clarity, as once more the independent
recovery operator was about to sleepwalk
into an even bigger problem and someone
was about to be prosecuted and used as a
legal test case. How can this be the case,
when the NPCC are part of the very same
group that set the standard in the first
place?
Further to this, following constant
chasing from several avenues into
SURVIVE, we could not get a definitive
answer. PROF was being told SURVIVE
had written to NPCC for clarity and had
not heard back. We’re not talking about
a small piece of guidance, the industry
had adopted a procedure and in good
faith was using the guidance on a regular
basis, not the occasional disabled driver,
the industry and its independent network
needed clarity.
So, PROF decided to contact the NPCC
direct and wrote on the 14th May to ask
for clarity, PROF did receive a letter
back from the NPCC, contained with the
letter dated 5th June with the following
statement.
“Furthermore, I have emphasised
to SURVIVE that such practice should
only take place after appropriate risk
assessment and after all the other
option for the safe removal of motorists

and passengers have been considered and discounted and
only then, where leaving people at the roadside in itself
considered dangerous.
I have also advised SURVIVE that where a vehicle and
its occupants are recovered in this way, the duration of
the immediate journey is kept to an absolute minimum
by identifying the nearest safe place for alternative
arrangements for onward travel to be made by the driver and
passengers of the vehicle being recovered.”

Clearly SURVIVE was in communication with the NPCC,
as the letter refers to on several occasions, why didn’t
SURVIVE communicate this message back to all the industry’s
interested parties? For those of you who don’t know SURVIVE
is made up four groups, Executive Committee, Working Group
1 (WG1) Protocols and Best Practice, (WG2) Standards, (WG3)
Communications.
Leaving it to chance
Perhaps SURVIVE should have considered communicating
back to the industry sooner and not leaving it to chance by
reading the latest update on their website. If you search
through the SURVIVE website you will see two updates both
on 10th June: “High level guidance for recovering occupants
in their vehicles from vulnerable situations at the roadside by
means of flatbed recovery vehicles” and the second “Carrying
passengers in casualty vehicles whilst being recovered on
trailers”. Neither refers to any communication from the NPCC
and still I’m told by PROF they are yet to receive a reply to
their request; however it seems both the updated documents
I refer to are based on information received from both
the NPCC and the DfT. Please see both documents on the
SURVIVE website, again details below.
Without doubt the recovery industry needs SURVIVE to be
ultimately responsible for communicating important changes
to safe working practices within our industry. The current
COVID-19 situation is evidence of this. Now unless there
is a misunderstanding with the role and basic structure of
SURVIVE, I’m sure this is where the information should come
from but to communicate this via an insignificant website
update in the hope it gets looked at, seems somewhat lacking
in clarity.
I finish with a final thought, has there been any discussions
within SURVIVE regarding PAS 43 & COVID-19 and applying
some kind of official relaxation in certificate/audit renewal. In
a similar way to the relaxation of MOT’s for three months by
the UK Government. An important point as during Lockdown
ISO and PAS 43 audits must have been postponed and for
obvious reasons. The industry surly needs some clarity
regarding certificate expiree and renewal during COVID-19
restrictions, this is clear as I notice from the SURVIVE PAS 43
database a number of certificates are now out of date, with
some imminently out of date.
Is it time to review those responsibilities, or should the
communication line be clearer more transparent and
reflective of the issues we face today and the foreseeable
future? Should the guidance SURVIVE gives be via an
automatic email notification, or should the responsibility for
information simply flow out to its members and the trade
associations to communicate?

An update from the Tow Show HQ with Nick Phipps
At the time of this issue going to press
we have held further discussions with
senior management at the T.I.C. with
reference to a logistical plan for the
2020 Tow Show.
Many of the lock down measures
have been relaxed in different
ways, with the hospitality and
events sectors under current review prior
to release of their new guidelines.
For every Tow Show and Roadshow
event we have organised since 2010, the
safety and wellbeing of every exhibitor,
visitor, guest, and external supplier has
been and will continue to be of the highest
priority to us, and a hugely important
factor in the organisation of our live
events.
At the time of writing, the TIC along with
other venues in the UK are awaiting release
of the Governement COVID-19 secure
guidelines for reopening events safely, an
official directive that will be published by
the DCMS (Department for Culture, Media
and Sport).
Our planning meetings for this year’s
show has included key discussions, not
only with the International Centre, but also
PHE, the HSE, our own health and safety
consultant Tony Wood, and our event
insurer.
Being armed with the new directives,
guidelines and procedures from all of
these professional bodies and advisors,
gives us the complete confidence that the
show will provide the highest standard of
safety and welfare for everyone working or
visiting the Telford International Centre.
All our sponsors and exhibitors will
be contacted by the show team in the
coming days with our next update, and
visitor guidelines will be published and
distributed in due course.
Although we aim to retain most of
the key features of the show, it is of
course clear that some changes and
adjustments will have to be made. As
well as the exhibition halls we have the
demonstration, business seminar and gala
night to consider, we are currently working
on a plan for all of these.
We fully expect the full details to be
available any day now. In fact by the time
you are reading this the information may
very well be distributed on our social
media channels and by email. In the

Light City from
Boniface adds
another dimension

In the challenging times we live in a small versatile recovery
vehicle can add another dimension to the fleet of a recovery
operator. Boniface has been offering the Light City, a product
from their associated company Jige International, for some years,
however some recent upgrades have improved it performance.
The equipment can be installed on to the Isuzu D Max or
Ford Ranger chassis, the D Max having the advantage of an
increased rear axle capacity. With special wheels and tyres and
some technical expertise it can be increased to an industry
leading 2300KG whilst the gross vehicle weight is increased to
3500KG and train weight 6500KG. This significantly increases the
operational capacity of the vehicle.
The equipment with the aid of the manually adjustable beacon
is no higher than the cab, this allows for car park access for both
removal of cars and assistance. In fact, in the assistance side adds
to the versatility, some customers use the Light City as a service
vehicle and in car parks the vehicle can remove many vehicles
to the exit where a slide bed or larger vehicle can transport the
casualty further.
Boniface also recognise that some businesses need to supply
vehicles to key workers for transport, as well as acting as incident
support. The Isuzu and the Ranger chassis can be supplied with
high specifications and coupled with the stylised looks of the
bodywork the overall presence is appealing.
The loaded specification includes, 4000KG electric winch,
road rolling dollies, rear spade anchor, jump leads, a compressor
supplies air to the suspension as well to a PCL coupling for air
lines, rear camera, remote control, strobes front and rear and
aluminium protection plates to the under lift.

Campaign update from Andy Lambert,

The CSRRR needs your help
I’ll start by first asking you to turn over the page and have a
look at the timeline I have put together covering safety events
in the recovery industry going back to 1995. Please accept my
apologies if you feel something is missing; this is purely my own
recollections and work but I know the main events are there.
What I think becomes immediately apparent is the work
achieved in the last two years; this coincides with the formation
of the CSRRR and the working relationship with Tendo Consulting.
As a reminder of the pressure we are keeping on the government
this is the most recent exchange with the APPG. If only we had
had the ear of the Transport Minister 25 years ago, just how
many lives would have been saved by now:
The main achievements in this relatively
short time are:
● The formation of a Recovery Industry APPG.
● The stock take of Red Lights.
● The review of Smart Motorways.
This productive work has only been made possible with Tendo’s
help. With our direction Tendo have opened doors for our
industry which have previously remained firmly closed. Therefore
it is vital that we provide the funds necessary for the continuation
of this work.
We are so close to achieving our immediate goals and now have
the vehicle to push our industry forward and give it the platform

Training today to secure

Institute of Vehicle Recovery
Not-For-Profit
The Institute of Vehicle Recovery (IVR) regularly quote that they are a not-for-profit
organisation, so when they say that, what do they truly mean?
Broadly speaking the term means
an organisation established for a
purpose other than that of making a
profit, where some or all surplus revenues
are used to further that purpose of the
organisation rather than benefit those
individuals with an interest.
In more technical terms, the IVR is not
a charity but a not-for-profit company,
it is a company limited by guarantee and
consequently does not have share capital.
This means, there are no paid directors and
no dividend pay-outs either, but that the
IVR are subject to the usual taxes.
The concept is that any surplus income
is reinvested back into what the IVR does
best, health and safety, training and
standards, so you can see why it is regularly
referred to, as part of the good work that
they do for the industry,
With a clear reinvestment strategy, the
IVR thought it was time to give the industry
a better insight into that reinvestment
and explain more of the specific project
examples that keep the NHSS17/17B
National Training Scheme running.
Training modules take time to develop,
some more than others, the development
process can take the efforts of 3, 4
sometimes 5 of its qualified ITSSAR
instructors, some who are still on the
frontline as dual operators/instructors. The
modules are researched, standards set, and
an initial development module produced,
this is reviewed by a CAT4 ITSSAR instructor
if they have not been involved in the
development. The module is then piloted
(often more than once) and rolled out
to instructors where the module may be
further tweaked before it is finally released
as a VR module.
IVR members may well remember, a few
years ago, at the IVR AGM a formal request
was made for the IVR to investigate and
design a multideck transporter module, a
module required following the tragic death
of a driver using a twin deck transporter.
This module took a long time to bring to
fruition, it was rolled out initially some time
ago and made it all the way to pilot stage
but the IVR were not completely satisfied,
therefore it went back into development
before finally emerging in early 2019 as the
VR28 Multideck Transporter module.
That particular module was an expensive
module to develop, the IVR will probably
never make back the money and time
invested, but it was an important module
to develop because it epitomises the
IVRs purpose. Raising health and safety
standards, through mechanical, handson
training. The advantages of having a
non-commercial entity means those gaps
in mechanical training are covered off by
the IVR even if at times it is not financially
viable.
The VR29 Tracked Vehicle Mover module
is another example of that type of module,
initially developed by three instructor/
developers, it has recently been revisited
by three different instructors. This
training is mainly there for those who have
purchased a tracked vehicle mover from
the pre-owned equipment marketplace.
Older modules are also kept in the IVR
repertoire, because the equipment is still
out there being used or being sold on.
VR14 Twin Boom is a great example of that,
possibly one of the most dangerous pieces
of equipment if it is not used correctly.
The number of instructors who deliver it
has dwindled over the years, but the IVR
can still support the training of this type of
equipment for those who need it.
Once a module is in existence it then
needs to be regularly reviewed. This can
be done in a variety of ways. Sometimes
those who are the specialists in that
subject are called upon to review. This
has been the case with the VR26 First Aid
module, it has been initially reviewed by
those who regularly teach first aid to the
recovery industry and who are actually
also first responders. That review has been
through an ITSSAR CAT4 instructor who also
trains the module and hopefully over the
next couple of weeks, it will be revealed
for further review with all the instructors
who deliver it. Once those amendments
are made the module will be piloted as
many times as is necessary before a CAT 4
instructor gives final sign off.
Over the past 18 months the IVR has
reviewed many of its modules, some are still
a work in progress: VR01, VR02 and VR03
(Core Modules), VR07 and VR16 (Advanced
Winching), VR8-11 Motorcycle Modules.
VR21 Recovery Incident Manager, VR27 EV
and Hybrid, VR33 Off Road Vehicles. The
COVID-19 pandemic shutdown time has
been well spent, undertaking some of these
reviews and updating instructors using
online conferencing when no practical is
needed. As well as producing online courses
where appropriate.
In some instances, it can be developers
who sit outside of the vehicle recovery
operator who assist with the development
or review, as was the case with the VR27
Electric and Hybrid Vehicle module, which
was developed with the then Technical
Training Manager at Allianz Worldwide
Partners.
It is this collective approach to
development with input from trainers and
the industry where required, that gives the
IVR the badge of being an industry scheme,
by the industry and for the industry.
Administrating the NHSS17/17B National
Training Scheme demands that there is a
financial stability to the company behind it.
Careful planning is needed to ensure the
scheme continues and it is able to ride the
peaks and troughs in its business model.
The IVR business has a definite seasonability
to it, and it tries to retain some
funds for a rainy day. COVID-19 has been
a prime example of that, nobody would
have believed the economic devastation
that such a virus could create, nobody
could foresee that it would bring hands-on,
practical training to a standstill. That buffer
in funds, has allowed the IVR to continue
trading and to use the time to effectively
build for the future, whilst keeping the
scheme protected and stable.

A very good morning to you all
and I hope you are all well in these
uncertain times.
The RRRA have been working hard
behind the scenes dealing with our
members problems on an individual
level to make sure they have received
the support they need and we have also
arranged for all members to be given
three months FREE membership to offset
costs caused by the virus.
RRRA committee are meeting regularly
on Microsoft Teams, so now this old fossil
is able to use another form of technology.
This is actually working so well that it will
become a far more regular occurrence,
allowing more work to be done instead
of wasting time travelling. Only yesterday
we had a very productive meeting with
HE discussing protocol and operators
suggestions for working the ERA’s on the
Smart Motorways. Great to see we are
now being listened to and our suggestions
are being discussed on a regular basis.
Last week RRRA signed off with
the SURVIVE Group the latest set of
recommendations for our operators
dealing with breakdowns. Other groups
have given advice, sometimes wrongly,
so I urge you all to heed the advice from
SURVIVE which is the industry group
behind PAS43 that has all the important
industry groups represented on a
committee.
RRRA have also been training online
giving our members and others the
opportunity to get ahead with their DCPC
hours with courses such as our Smart
Motorways course and tacho course.
If, you still have people on furlough you
should recommend they complete their
hours.
Recovery is actually getting much
harder now that we are dealing with
four people in cars as opposed to just
the driver that had been the norm.
Once again I need to make clear that
moving passengers in their own vehicle
is actually breaking the law and although
the Police are allowing it to a place of
safety you can still be prosecuted. Please
stick to your guns here, to safety only.
Some of the work providers are very
reluctant to provide a taxi for customers
because of costs involved but please
do not give in and put your staff at risk.
Supplying a courtesy car is the answer for
both work providers and yourself but the
work providers need to paying for this
service and for the decontamination of
your courtesy vehicle afterwards. This will
be cheaper in most cases for the work
providers than taxi’s and could even help
by allowing you to deliver next day or
along with other vehicles to keep costs
down.
We are now well into June and
Government has allowed the nonessential
shops to start trading. Work
volumes have begun to pick up but it is
very hard to keep levels of staff at the
right level. With the three week rule on
furlough, if you bring an operative back
too early and then have to lay him off
again you have lost him for another three
weeks which is the last thing you need if
work suddenly picks up. For employers
who are not aware, you should be using
furlough days as holiday days where
employees have already booked the
holidays.
We are finding that our operators now
seem to be getting first jobs of the day
around 8am instead of the usual 5am and
it is still very quiet in the evenings. Shift
systems are not working so well in the
evenings and the call out system seems to
be more suited to present volumes.
Contractors working for the AA and
RAC are finding volumes especially low
as they are covering the vast majority of
work themselves with their patrols. As
they bring their own staff off furlough a

The next big challenge will be when
the furlough becomes part time because
many operators will be forced to cut shift
times which will in turn leave staff with
a shortfall in wages. As it is many staff
have become so used to being at home
enjoying family life that they do not want
to return to working all hours. There are
lots of recovery firms who are laying staff
off too so it remains to be seen how soon
volumes will return and whether we have
enough staff to cope when they do. Quite
simply put, operators fixed expenses such
as rent, rates etc are so much higher than
the income coming back in at the moment
that many will not survive unless volumes
increase dramatically and even then we
will all have big debts to deal with over the
next few years. It is now the time to reflect
on what rates we are willing to work for to
get back onto an even keel and also time
to diversify as many already have, so your
eggs are not all in the one basket.
Next challenge will be getting all your
trucks plated. DVSA do not seem to have
the answer to when we can begin retesting
and they are not keeping their test
stations updated too well either. Hopefully
I will have more info on this by the next
magazine. Even then its going to be a lot of
work and money getting your whole fleet
tested in a short period.
Before I finish I would like to thank all
the work providers that have supported
their operators financially in this crisis.
A big thank you to Call Assist, Green
Flag, Britannia, Interpartner, National
Breakdown and Hadleigh who have all
been great. Its nice to know who has got
your back at times like these. I am sadly
disappointed that some of the other larger
work providers didn’t follow suit though.

I’M OUT!
Dealing with
the unrealistic
expectations of
so many people
does my head
in. I really miss
the challenge of
plugs and points
and hate it when
I cannot even find
the engine for
sound proofing.
And getting out
of bed and going
out in the cold will
be a thing of the
past.
It will no doubt come as a surprise to many
people, but nothing goes on forever so after 60
years working in the motor trade and almost as
long in breakdown and recovery, I have decided
to stand back and leave the running of our 24hr
recovery service to my son David, who already
runs our two dealerships as well as a service
centre and body shop.
The lockdown has provided a good
opportunity for change and no doubt a
few updates, as work has been low with
many staff on furlough. I had hoped to keep
going but I am sick of working long hours one
way or another and seeing trucks returning from
jobs and thinking that was a waste of time.
I must point out I am not emigrating or going
into any form of hiding, but I may find it hard
to write this page when no longer at the front
line, hopefully some topics may still get me
inspired. One thing is for sure I with not be
involving myself in any groups or committees
that might put more hardship on the already
stretched industry, I have seen too many people
go that route (not that anybody would have me).
I will however continue my work and hobby of
working in motorsport recovery, including the
British Touring Car Championship, where we
have developed some great ideas which are now
being used at circuits throughout the UK. I will
also still be available if the AVRO man or anyone
else wants to buy me lunch.
Looking back I feel I have achieved much
more than I could ever have imagined; leaving
school with less than a basic education, after
missing a lot of school due to ill health. Once
during a meeting a jobsworth asked me what
I had ever done for the industry, I told him I
worked in it, was that not enough? The problem
is my dyslexia slows my thinking response time
giving the impression of a very small brain, were
as give me two or three minutes and I am on top
of the job.
Rest is history
What I should have told him is I ran a
successful recovery service after starting
with £300 and a tool box back in 1973. Then in
1992 together with Bob Toon I helped develop
Police recovery schemes with the first being
with Durham Police, the rest is history on that
front. In later years although some people will
not agree I went a long way to stopping the
R licence (now ROLS) being forced upon the
industry. Some people don’t forgive me for that
but I have always believed the law of the land is
enough for any business. And with my success
in motorsport recovery, not even to mention my
career as a rally driver with Toyota and Vauxhall,
I could have shut this guy up. I have been told
several times I could have done a lot better if
I had embraced politics more and been more
politically correct, but life would have been less
exciting, or do I mean boring.
Absolute pleasure
I will miss so many things; for example just
attending a RRRA meeting where you are with
likeminded people can be a real boost. I need
to record the absolute pleasure of working
with Brian Hagan, the Bernie Ecclestone of the
recovery industry and former head of National
Breakdown and Green Flag. Likewise Ben

Johnson, Nigel Ashton and the various people
at Britannia Rescue have all been great
to work with, and not forgetting big Jack
Stapleton. I cannot say the same about the
AA and RAC who we once worked for, they
are so far up their own backside and have
done so much damage to our side of the
industry with rates alone, never mind the
commercial suppression of their independent
competitors, the small clubs, but I do admire
the skills of their patrol vans, something we
should aspire to.
Unrealistic expectations
I see friction between operators but I
have always got on really well both locally
and country wide, and this will continue but
it won’t be long before I am out of touch. I
suppose it’s an age thing but there are many
things I will not miss one bit. People with
no mandate from anybody starting groups
or committees in the name of our industry.
People aiming to make our life more difficult
especially when nobody asked them in the
first place, or even individual people trying
the same thing. Dealing with the unrealistic
expectations of so many people does my head
in. I really miss the challenge of plugs and
points and hate it when I cannot even find the
engine for sound proofing. And getting out of
bed and going out in the cold will be a thing of
the past.
As I said I will still be around and may even
do the odd long relay, my favourite job, out of
sight out of mind. I may even have time to visit
the Tow Show if that ever happens in these
challenging times; and I am free for lunch.

Huge financial
and operational
challenges ahead
Well these are certainly
unprecedented times, and how many
times have you heard either someone
say, or said yourself, that of late? We
are all living through history with huge
financial and operational challenges
to all our businesses.
As is the case with most at present,
I am not able to travel to meet
members, potential members, and
associate members. However, I was set
a task from AVRO National Council to
reach out and make personal contact with
every AVRO member - it was, as you might
expect, quite a task but in all honesty a
very worthwhile one and a pleasure to
undertake.
I have always been very keen on hearing
from the coal face and speaking directly
with AVRO members (and as I say this is
quite a substantial task, but I would not
like to see it done any other way). I really
enjoy being able to discuss not only the
main issues of the day, which of course
is currently dominated by the COVID-19
pandemic, but many other issues and
challenges our industry continue to face
on a daily basis.
With that I would just like to add at this
stage my personal thanks to everyone who
has picked up my call, called me back or
replied to my e-mails, the information
you pass to me I feed directly back not
only to AVRO National Council but in the
many meetings and communications I am
involved in on a daily basis. It is invaluable
information and it allows AVRO to fully
represent its members.
On speaking with the membership, in
general terms there has been a downturn
in business ranging from 65% to 80%,
quite a substantial amount I am sure you
will agree, especially when you consider
the industry relies on volume to make the
numbers work.
Many members have taken advantage
of the Government Furlough scheme
and I was pleased to see the Chancellor
extending the scheme until 31st October
2020, although some changes to the
scheme are imminent. On that it is
worth noting at this point that AVRO had
contacted HM Treasury and the Treasury
Select Committee calling for more
flexibility in the Furlough scheme, and I
am pleased to see that changes to the
furlough scheme will allow employees
to work on a part-time basis, while still
enrolled with the scheme, which is exactly
what is required to assist the roadside
recovery industry.
The information I have from my
discussions with the membership thus
far is very similar to that of the results of
the two recent AVRO surveys undertaken.
This is invaluable information for AVRO to
have and it is key that we have accurate
facts and figures so again we can fully
represent our members when in dialogue
with industry stakeholders and respected
Governments and administrations. I
cannot stress enough how valuable
this information is, I know you all have
enough to do, but by providing AVRO with
the facts and figures it allows AVRO to
continue to represent is members armed
with accurate and factual information.
On the topic of AVRO surveys, we
have the results published on the new
AVRO website - www.avrouk.com - and
I strongly encourage you to take five
minutes to take a look, they make for an
interesting read.
Continuing with my conversations with
the membership, I am discovering obvious
concerns from members throughout the
UK and Ireland which include:
1. The lack of financial assistance from
work providers.
2. Whilst general work volumes are
reported to be between 65% to 80%
down, the consensus is that the level of
police-led recoveries were largely being
maintained. However, most commented
that the type of work had changed with
the lower (or non) paying incidents,
such as Section 165 removals and PACE
recoveries, heavily outweighing the
more lucrative RTC work
3. Huge reductions in ‘club work’,
particularly from the ‘big two’ who
operate their own patrol and recovery
fleets. Dare I say but the words ‘we are
used when needed, dropped when not’
was repeated to me numerous times.
Appreciation must be shown however
to those work providers who have come
forward with support for the operators.
4. Confusion over the Government
business grants and whether they
qualify or not?
5. Police Scotland have disputed the
advice that AVRO, SURVIVE Group and
the IVR have given in relation to carrying
passengers, even though advice regarding
this was sought from Government. Police
Scotland via FMG have recently notified
their contractors that it is illegal to carry
passengers on the back of a recovery
vehicle. On 8th June AVRO issued a
member communication on Roadside
Recovery Guidance – Removals to place
of safety along with updated guidance
from SURVIVE. A further member
communication was issued on 16th June
in relation to Police Scotland
On the subject of the carriage of
passengers, you will be aware that the
SURVIVE group recently released updated
guidance and I take this opportunity to
remind all that there is no legislation that
specifically covers this activity and that the
guidance issued by SURVIVE Group is Best
Practice Guidance and has not been tested
in court.
AVRO is continuing in its dialogue with
DfT, DVSA, HSE, NPCC and others as well
as lobbying Government for the necessary
change in legislation to encompass this
procedure into law.

In relation to ‘carrying of passengers’,
a couple of our members have taken
matters into their own hands and have
fitted out their crew cabs with PVC
separation screens. If you would like
further information regarding this, drop

There are obvious costs attached to
constructing a safe zone in a vehicle
as well as the sanitisation of the cab
after each job. This is once again a cost
that will have to be borne mainly by the
VRO, and this must be acknowledged by
work providers and operators given due
respect.
It has been suggested that operators
should at least charge for the sanitisation
of the vehicle after each of the work
provider’s passengers leave the recovery
truck especially during this time and the
risks to health; I do not find that to be an
unreasonable request.
AVRO invited a number of work
providers including Call Assist, Britannia,
Hadleigh, RAC and Green Flag, as well
as representatives from the NPCC
(National Police Chiefs Council) and the
Metropolitan Police to join us on a virtual
conference call. These were set up in
response to our request for financial
assistance for our members as well as
discussing the current plight of VRO’s, the
way out in terms of an exit strategy and
what the repercussions and changes will
be for our industry during this pandemic
and going forward.
We would like to thank those ‘Clubs’
who have made a gesture of financial
assistance but it also has to be said that
the ‘big two’ namely RAC and AA have to
date offered no financial help whatsoever,
all of which our members have noted, and
to put it politely are ‘disappointed.’
We have written to all UK Police Chief
Constables asking for a reduction in
management fees to help the industry
and to date several Police authorities
have reduced their management fees
to recognise the plight of the industry
although the Government had sent out
to all departments the need to support
businesses that provide an essential
service to key departments that they
should consider financially supporting
them during this crisis to ensure continuity
for the future.
Our aim is to continue to be proactive
in events such as Stakeholder meetings
including members of the Home Office,
continual dialogue with the various work
providers, Highways England, Police etc.
and as the largest and longest running
Association representing vehicle recovery
operators we will continue to work
tirelessly for the good of our membership
and the wider industry.

Hiab! It’s all in a name
It’s an extremely
useful tool, that
needs to be
respected as it can
be a dangerous
device if operated
incorrectly in
the hands of an
untrained person
You may not be aware, but Hiab is actually
a brand name. This particular word has
become familiar within the haulage
and recovery industries when referring to a
lorry mounted crane or loader. This specific
vehicle type is made up of a truck and crane
combined in a singular vehicle and is used to
help load and unload trailers or lifting heavy
objects form one position to another by using
the engine power and hydraulics of the crane
element.
The introduction of these vehicles was
greeted with great delight by the industry
as it allowed companies to offer services
where the need for a separate crane could be
reduced or indeed, not needed at all. Before
these vehicles were developed, most loading
and unloading was achieved by hand and
very time consuming, so the arrival of these
vehicles revolutionised industries and saved
considerable amounts of time in the process.
It must be remembered though, that
although an extremely useful tool, it needs to
be respected as it can also be a dangerous
device if operated incorrectly in the hands of
an untrained person. Without proper training,

operators are less efficient and increases the chances of an
accident, injury or property damage.
Founded in 1978, The Association of Lorry Loaders and
Importers is the industry body set up at the request of the
Health and Safety Executive and it remains the UK’s only trade
association devoted to the lorry loader industry. Although, in
the recovery industry this accreditation is not a requirement,
it should be considered for compliance and training purposes.
Any operator looking to make the addition of crane and Hiab
to their portfolio must ensure the following. All core models
are completed through the IVR along with module VR06
transporters and then finally, VR17 Lorry Loader Cranes in
Vehicles. All equipment must be LOLER certified and records
must be kept up to date of all thorough examinations and any
defects must be reported to the person responsible for the
equipment and the relevant enforcing authority. The LOLER
regulation places duties on companies who own, operate
or have control over lifting equipment. Also be mindful that,
lifting equipment is also classed as work equipment, so the
PUWER (Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations)
also applies.

Gough was very clear in his view regarding training and safety
when using Hiab equipment. “Our Hiab units are utilised in
difficult vehicle extrications. Each job is very different from
the last and so we take extra care to gain as much information
about the recovery before we despatch the required vehicle
to attend the scene. This is either done by sending a forward
scouting team or by the receipt of photographs sent to us
from the incident. Once we have established what equipment
will be needed, our team is sent to evaluate and risk assess
before the evacuation can begin. Our staff are fully trained
to IVR VR17 for Hiab use and all our equipment is LOLER
certified. We find the Hiab crane to be excellent in a variety
of situations, with its dexterity being valuable in helping us
reach vehicles that are submerged or situated in deep ditches
as examples. The Hiab is also excellent in helping secure the
vehicle in a way where no further damage can be inflicted
during extrication. At Richford Motor Services Ltd, we have
a duty of care to the vehicle that we recover and the vehicle
owner that we preserve the vehicle and provide them with
the best possible insurance outcome.” Nikki continued “Our
Hiab crane operators take the safety of everyone concerned
at the incident extremely seriously and will not perform the
operation of removal until it is safe to do so.”
Richford Motor Services Ltd operate over 180 vehicles from
10 bases including 6 Hiab crane units, with a further vehicle on
order due to be delivered in September.

John Statham from Statham’s concurs regarding certification
and safety. “We operate a single Hiab unit form our base
here in Dunstable. Out of our 23 vehicles, we use the Hiab
for about 50% of the jobs we attend. The Hiab enables us to
reach problematic stricken vehicles with greater ease due to
its tip and control functionality. Our team are fully IVR trained
and our equipment is certified to LOLER standards which we

IN common with all vehicle recovery operators throughout
the UK the recovery operators in the densely populated
South East of England have had to face the Coronavirus/
COVID-19 crisis head on. They have lived through it and are
now coming out of the other side.
Some operators have used the time of the pandemic crisis
to reimagine the future of their businesses to face the future
with renewed vigor and a good deal of optimism too.
Saunders Garage
Debbie Saunders at Saunders Garage has an upbeat and
positive aspect to the COVID-19 crisis. She told Professional
Recovery magazine: “Although I am, of course, aware that
COVID-19 has had a dreadful, negative impact on the UK as a
whole, the impact on our business hasn’t been all negative.
We were able to keep all our staff working without furloughing
anyone, though we did change working hours, though as
business is picking up, these are being reviewed again.
“We have lost some staff due to natural wastage, so we are
looking to recruit vehicle recovery staff.
“Although some of our work was slightly down, our two
depots at Saunders Recovery and Buckdale in Bedfordshire are
working pretty much as normal, as they maintain our motorway
recovery contracts on the M4 and the M25. We have also seen
an increase in work for police contracts.”
Debbie went on to say: “We are using the opportunity of the
COVID-19 situation to reexamine how we operate our business,
to change how we do things, looking at things like changing

Silverback Recovery
Silverback are one of the mainstays of the recovery industry, a
family business who have been trading for 20 years.
Roger Sugden of Silverback said: “It’s been very, very quiet
during the Coronavirus situation. In fact, it’s been a bit tough.
We work with two main dealerships doing accident recovery
and breakdown work, but as they were closed down that dried
up. We were only doing one recovery job a week at one point.
Though now the main dealers have started work again, things
are, hopefully, looking up again.
“The recovery jobs increased to three to four jobs a week
and things are increasing as more and more people are
driving on the roads again as things begin to start up after the
shutdown.
“We have been working with two other local vehicle
recovery firms, helping each other out during the crisis,
Gatwoods and Streets Transport, swapping jobs and that sort
of thing.
“That’s the sort of thing vehicle recovery operators do.

Deejay Truck Repairs Limited very early on in
the COVID-19 situation took the decision not
to lay any staff off.
Colin Wlison said: “Although we still
continued to do some club work, there
wasn’t much of that to be honest. What we
concentrated on were our regular customers.
They are big supermarkets who need to keep
their delivery vans on the road seven days
a week and I realised that if we laid off or
furloughed any of our staff we would run the
very real risk of not being able to offer our
customers the 100% service that we like to
provide them with.
“We could not risk letting them down,
or our other major customers, as they still
needed us to be there for them for when they
had a vehicle breakdown.
“It would be no use reducing our capacity
if we had an important customer screaming
down the phone at us if we couldn’t do the
recovery job they needed. Fair enough, we
were only operating at 75% of our normal
workload but I realised that if we laid anyone
off that this would risk us losing that client in
the long term and I wasn’t prepared to take
that risk.
“We are keeping on going and we are
looking after our regular customers.”

said: “Due to the Coronavirus situation I felt
it necessary to furlough all of my recovery
staff and wait the situation out. Basically I
have been trying to run my entire business by
myself. I dusted off my spanners and had to
get back on the tools!”
Robert added: “Due to the sterling work of
our NHS staff as they worked hard during the
crisis I decided to have my vehicle converted
into a mobile ‘Thank you to the NHS workers’
message.”
Another result of the Coronavirus situation
is that the special three day charity rally
from the Black Forest to Monte Carlo in a car
costing no more than £500 that Robert was
going to participate in has been cancelled
until next year. “That’s something to look
forward to” he added with a laugh.

is a difficult time for any recovery operator.
We work on an unknown quantity of jobs any
day of the year. If you add in the COVID 19
pandemic then it has made everything even
more unpredictable.
“The government furlough scheme has been
a welcome addition it is still very difficult to
decide when to bring some staff back to work
as every day is up and down. However, being
commercial vehicle based luckily a lot of our
customers are working as normal during this
crisis. This has helped with keeping wheels
turning through lock down. We all must
remain positive and look after our customers
through this and maintain service levels.”

ONE of the most difficult and challenging
aspects of working within the recovery
industry is when you receive a call
where a vehicle has become stranded in
shallow water or fully submerged. Thoughts
immediately turn to the safety of the
occupants and the test that awaits your
arrival.
The removal of a vehicle which has been
involved in a major or minor collision requires
a delicate approach and methodology
designed for the safety of everyone at the
scene but holds a greater difficulty when
water is involved.
Today’s vehicles provide a myriad of
difficulties to the operator as we no longer
deal with just petrol or diesel cars. The
emergence over the last 20 years of hybrid
vehicles and now electric cars requires a
whole new level of thinking. These vehicle
types are equipped with high voltage
batteries, or in some cases, batteries located
in unusual places, so it is important that these
are dealt with correctly to avoid any further
hazards occurring.
Vehicle water rescue is an exceptionally
specialist service that requires the highest
level of training and specific equipment
designed to be able to extricate stricken
vehicles. Currently, in the UK, we have very
few organisations that are trained and operate
a water recovery service, but we have been
able to speak to two operators that provide
this assistance.

We spoke with Sam shortly after he had
completed a successful job where he had
rescued a Renault Captur that was submerged
in a river in Wales.

Director recently undertook a mammoth
operation recovering a 40-tonne lorry that
had unfortunately found itself drowning in the
lock basin at Chatham Historic Dockyard. Paul
and his team were called to the dock yard,
where they spent roughly six hours preparing
method and risk assessments. Working
alongside environmental inspectors and the
port authority, they embarked on a 6 hour
recovery operation in challenging conditions
to extricate the vehicle from the basin. Using
a 750-tonne crane and expert diving teams
from Chatham and Portsmouth, the vehicle
was safely extricated and repositioned
onto the quayside. The wreckage was then
folded and transported safely to salvage for
scrapping. Paul said “This was a very difficult
operation and the planning and execution
was only possible due to the excellent cooperation
we received from the dockyard,
environment agency, the port authority and
the expert diving teams. We would like to
place on record our thanks to all concerned.”
For any operator considering adding a flood
water recovery service to its portfolio, the IVR
currently have a course under development.

it’s a magnetic deep socket set (part number 7783).
These are deep sockets (63mm in length), 3/8” drive, seven
sockets included (7mm to 14mm), all with a 6-point single hex.
And they are magnetised, but here is the difference: the
magnet is spring-loaded, and travels down the length of the
socket. So when access is difficult and you have to run a nut
along a long thread, reach for these magnetic sockets and you
won’t lose the nut. Exhaust manifold studs, handbrake cable
adjusters, turbo actuators, there are lots of applications where
these sockets will get you out of trouble. Fitting the nut, it’s
held securely as you reach down into the engine compartment.
Removing the nut, you can spin it down the whole length of the
thread, then remove the socket with the nut intact.
These are sturdy sockets, manufactured from strong
chrome vanadium steel. Usefully, you can purchase the sockets
separately, if you need one for a particular application: 7mm
(part number 7784), 8mm (7785), 10mm (7786), 11mm (7787),
12mm (7788), 13mm (7789) and 14mm (7790).
