sheila june
WORDS | NANCY PINCOMBE
Mesmerizing close-ups of natural subjects, particularly flowers, combined with a strategic use of focus, give Sheila June’s photos a painterly
feeling. Delicious smears of colour are juxtaposed with minute detail. You’ll really feel you’ve seen these subjects. Yet an element of abstraction
gives these images a wonderful versatility. Sheila’s background in painting shows clearly, but she has turned her hand (and eye!) to almost
everything you can think of that involves visual art. She feels that art is universal and that all mediums are equally valid and full of potential. She
should know, she’s mastered so many. These include painting, decorative painting, photography, real estate photography, video production
(keepsake, real estate, and video-from-still for personal and business), home staging consultation, and wall hangings that incorporate
macramé, weaving, and feathers. She even makes accessories and jewelry. Sheila is self-taught and finds inspiration everywhere, in cracks
and decay as much as in new growth and light. Living on the Sunshine Coast, Sheila finds that “everything here has . . . inspired creating. It is a
beautiful, spiritual, magical place to live.”
ANNA MAY BENNETT
“Ever since I was a child, I’ve been drawn to the sea: the vastly changing landscapes, the many textures, both surrounding and underfoot, and the
varied weather. From the calm to the storm, season to season, I am excited to capture and share these experiences.”
Born and raised on the east coast of Scotland, Anna spent her childhood immersed in the creative arts. The youngest daughter of a textile
artist and aircraft engineer/folk singer, her creative expression was encouraged and supported. Upon graduation, Anna studied art under the
guidance of Mark Weighton at Chethams School in Manchester, England. She then went on to complete a Higher National Diploma in Public Art
in Edinburgh, Scotland. Falling in love with a young Canadian while travelling in Greece spurred her to travel to Canada in February of 2000. They
married in 2001 and are raising two sons in Powell River on BC’s Sunshine Coast.
“Living on the Coast in such a diverse and vibrant
community and building a life with the people I love gives
me the opportunity to explore my preferred work. My studio
in the historic Townsite offers an inspiring space in which to
create my current body of work, and as one who benefits
from the skills, courage, and determination of those who
contribute to this amazing community, I am happy in return
to share my perspective with others.”
Anna’s solo show, “Shorelines and Skylines,” runs August
Drama is the first impression. Motoko really works her canvasses and, while tending toward more restricted palettes, her
use of colour is masterful. You’ll see glowing depths, wonderful, inspired blending, and dollops of milky, almost chunky
colour that really pop out at the viewer. Each segment of her diptychs, triptychs, and four-panel paintings shows strong
stand-alone composition in deceptively simple colours. Motoko’s large acrylic paintings are minimalist, with a strong
sense of design, with influences from abstract impressionism as well as Japanese classical painting with its emphasis on
nature, simplicity, and harmony.
In Motoko’s words, “I paint what I feel.” And she feels increasingly drawn to more restrained palettes and to the essential
influences of nature (earth, water, wind, fire). She also feels strongly that “this is what the world needs” and hopes her
work invokes serenity and focus in the midst of clashing and contradictory influences in contemporary culture.
WORDS | NANCY PINCOMBE
summer 2016 17

Motoko was born and raised in Japan and
moved to Canada when she was 29. She
has been operating her successful gallery
on the Sunshine Coast, in Sinclair Bay, since
2005. Zen philosophy greatly influences
her life and work. Some Zen principles
include understatement, the avoidance of
clutter and the nonessential, and the use of
asymmetry and empty space.
Visit Motoko’s gallery and you’ll find the
entire experience is informed by these
principles. Her gallery space is bright and
uncluttered, with a charming water feature
just outside. Up some rough stone steps is
a rock garden with a dramatic cliff looming
protectively alongside. Motoko likes to take
her morning coffee there to watch the light
play on the wild plants and moss and to feel
the energy of the stone before she begins
her day’s work.
And she is working! Motoko’s Fine Art gallery
will feature an exhibition of new paintings
August 6–14.
MOTOKO’S GALLERY IS AT 4590 SINCLAIR BAY RD, GARDEN BAY, PENDER HARBOUR. VISIT HER WEBSITE AT WWW.MOTOKO.CA TO SEE MORE OF HER ORIGINAL ART.
Pender Harbour has been hosting its impressive and enthusiastically attended jazz festival for 20 years!
2016 dates are September 16-18, and the aim, as always, is to bring us as many styles and eras of jazz as
possible. New this year, don’t miss Gospel Hour on Sunday morning (featuring The Sojourners, should be
amazing) at the Music School. See the detachable “Program at a Glance” on the back of this page for the many
outstanding artists! This year private venues such as The Restaurant at Painted Boat, the Garden Bay Pub,
the Grasshopper Pub, and Emmelle’s Bistro are booking their own gigs. Check their websites or www.phjazz.ca
frequently as bookings firm up. This community is serious about music. Aren’t we lucky?
Now that summer is here with its lazy pleasures, its long sunsets, and bright
water, music lovers are anticipating the 12th Pender Harbour Chamber Music
Festival. The third weekend in August—the 18th to 21st—means sublime
concerts in a former Forestry building above the harbour in Madeira Park.
Every year it gets better and better, so the question is . . .
What can you expect this August? A gathering of highly acclaimed musicians,
to begin with. Violinists Mark Fewer, David Gillham, and Joyce Lai. Violist
Ian Clarke. Cellist Simon Fryer. And COULOIR, the dynamic harp/cello duo
of Heidi Krutzen and Ariel Barnes. Our Rising Tide initiative—a free concert
to showcase young performers—will bring together the Coast’s own Hanna
Crudele (violin), along with violist Rae Gallimore and pianist Jenny Dou.
Artistic Director—and pianist extraordinaire—Alexander Tselyakov devotes
his magic to both the keyboard and the elegant festival programming.
Opening night, Thursday, August 18, means Opening Doors—a grand first
concert culminating in Robert Schumann’s gorgeous Piano Quartet in E-flat
Major. Friday follows with the Rising Tide musicians playing a broad selection
of chamber repertoire in a free concert, A Brightening Breeze; Strings of
Summer Light that evening promises to enchant, to take us dreaming under
starlight. On Saturday afternoon, In the Key of Blue offers something for
everyone, from the classical tradition to Duke Ellington. And that evening,
Summer Dances, with Kikta, Schulhoff, and Dvořák, will transport us all. To end
the festival on Sunday afternoon, Paired to Perfection, a wonderful selection
of virtuosic pieces, culminates in Mendelssohn’s magnificent Octet for Strings
in E-flat Major.
Afternoon concerts are at 1:30 pm, evening ones at 7:00 pm. Tickets are $30
per concert or $15 for students 18 and under.
YOGA al fresco
Energy, flow, suppleness, power, non-attachment, tenacity, surrender, vitality.
Nature has it all figured out. We just need to follow her example and be part of it.
There’s no better way than outdoor yoga. Brigit Garrett at Lakeside Yoga in Madeira
Park agrees that “this is the ultimate way to practice yoga . . . exposed to the
elements (on) which Ayurveda (Science of Life) and yoga are based.”
Outdoor yoga classes take place on the shores of stunning Ruby Lake, so an
after-yoga swim is always an option. And lunch on the Ruby Lake Resort patio
is highly recommended. Classes go ahead rain or shine and on rainy days are
held at the sheltered but open-air Ruby Lake Amphitheatre. Visit their website at
intouchtherapeutics.ca and read some of the testimonials; they’ll make you want
to find time for more yoga in your life. SUP (that’s Stand-Up Paddleboard) yoga
combines all the elements of outdoor yoga with an intense exploration of balance,
concentration, extra attention to breath, and appropriate alignment—there’s
no faking it. But ultimately water is a forgiving element and gives us the perfect
example of flow. Garrett says the challenge is responding and adjusting to “the
feedback from your body and the board.” And, as with everything, “A good sense of
play and humour are helpful.”
the goddess of spring comes home...
P E R S E P H O N E
INTERVIEW BY NANCY PINCOMBE
KEZIA NATHE
We all know the Persephone story: Demeter’s lovely
young daughter, Persephone, the symbol of Spring,
gets snatched by the lonely Hades and taken away to
the Underworld. Demeter, the goddess of agriculture,
particularly grain crops, is so full of despair at the loss
of her daughter that she stops her work. All the flora
on earth withers. After some negotiation Persephone
is allowed to return to earth for half the year. And this
gives us our growing seasons: fallow and fertile.
ZOOM has been talking to Dion Whyte, General
manager at Persephone Brewing Company, about
Persephone’s impact on our community.
For many Coast residents, the arrival of Persephone Brewing Company in Gibsons
felt a lot like the arrival of Persephone the goddess. That is, Spring, something
intensely desired and long awaited. Can you comment on the welcome and level of
enthusiasm our community has shown for Persephone?
The community’s welcome and support have been overwhelming. When we first
took possession of this property and were quietly building our hop yard along
North Road, our co-founder, Brian Smith, walked out to the billboard sign one
morning and spelled out “It’s a Beer Farm.” That was the trigger. All of a sudden,
the traffic passing by had the answer as to what was being developed here, and
the excitement and interest were amazing: people pulling over to take pictures,
honking as they drove by, yelling their support—even driving onto the property
to ask questions. The weekend we opened, we were overrun and sold out of our
growler bottles in two days, borrowing more from Townsite Brewing up the Coast
to keep rolling. Since then the community has truly adopted Persephone as its
own, making full use of this family-friendly, farm-based social hub to gather, hold
fundraisers, attend events, and build community.
KEZIA NATHE
KEZIA NATHE MCLACHLAN STUDIOS
SHERYL HANULA
Sure, we’re keen consumers of your product, but you’re
seeking to involve the community in other projects as well.
Can you give us some examples?
The Sunshine Coast Association for Community Living—a
local non-profit providing services and programs to people
living with developmental disabilities—is a part owner of
Persephone Brewing and has its own social enterprises on
this site (including Bottle Me, vegetable gardening, and a
flock of laying hens). The broader community gets involved
in fundraising events that generate funds for SCACL or that
support farm enterprises at the brewery. Examples include
hops planting and harvesting, our Tough Kegger adventure
race, our annual anniversary party, the Sunshine Coast Craft
Beer Festival, and more. Currently we are running an equity
investment campaign. Our goal is to attract 1000 investors
to raise capital for equipment. Individuals can purchase
shares in Persephone for as little as $250 and join our family
of owner/shareholders. For more details visit our website at
persephonebrewing.com.
Other examples of community involvement include
participating in the Art Crawl, hosting an apiary on site,
providing our greenhouse to Backyard Bounty (a local organic
farm) at no cost, and running a pop-up farm gate Friday to
Sunday through the summer with three other local farms.
Finally, we host NUMEROUS fundraisers here at Persephone
for local non-profit organizations, at little or no cost to them,
and provide discounts on beer purchased for fundraising
activities to help them achieve their goals. We also host many
cycling-related events such as the BC Enduro Bike Race,
Gibsons Grind, Bike to Work Week wrap-up parties, etc.
Let’s talk beer. What’s your most popular brew? And what new
brew are you most excited about?
Our most popular beers are our Goddess Golden Ale and
Persephone Pale Ale. The former is an English-style summer
ale, light in colour, with a bready malt character and just
enough hop flavour and aroma to keep the die-hard craft
beer drinker interested while remaining approachable for
those of us who might be used to the more neutral-flavoured
light lagers. The Goddess Golden Ale is of course named after
Persephone herself! Our Persephone Pale Ale is a North
American-style pale ale with a schwack of citrus hop aroma
and flavour, balanced against a delicious malt backbone.
Both beers are great year-round. As for beers I’m most
excited about—such a hard question! We’ve never brewed
a beer I didn’t like. Our Dry Irish Stout is a nitrogenated stout
(meaning it pours with a low carbonation and a creamy head
like a Guinness) and has won gold at BC Beer Awards twice.
Our Double IPA is a personal favourite and, in my opinion, the
finest beer of its style in BC. It holds its own against any other
Double IPA out there.
Sunshine Coast shoppers face a few challenges.
Lots of small businesses start up and get us
excited with what they could offer. Then it’s not
uncommon to watch them struggle and disappear
after a year or so. And we might occasionally
feel as if we’re a captive market for some of the
larger businesses. If we’re a little cynical, it’s
understandable. That’s why ZOOM likes to send a
shout-out to the businesses that really serve our
communities and consistently offer us what we
need. IGA Madeira Park is one example:
“The staff cares about my shopping experience.
Almost every time I go in, at some point, Troy asks
me if I’m finding everything that I need.”
” . . . I’ve been shopping there since 1981 and have
seen such an evolution! Fresh fish! A bakery with
great breads . . . And maybe the most impressive
thing is that they now carry a small selection of the
lovely Portneuf cheeses from Quebec.”
WORDS | NANCY PINCOMBE
OUR NEIGHBOUR... OUR STORE
Troy and Lorie Callewaert have just marked their 10th
anniversary running the Madeira Park IGA. The store,
which has been around for forty years, has received
some significant upgrades. You’ll notice new cake
and sandwich cases, a produce section makeover,
and the entire back of the store now sports a stateof-the-art
LED closed-door refrigeration system that
will drastically reduce energy costs. Troy and Lorie
actively seek opportunities for their store to sponsor
community events such as the jazz and blues festivals
and the Mountain Grind. As well, they’ve gone for
innovative and unusual projects. The store has
developed its own recipe for heritage sausage, one of
the fifteen kinds of sausage it makes in-house. Each
time a package of these is sold, one dollar goes to
the Pender Harbour Living Heritage Society. A similar
sausage recipe is being developed to support the
Pender Ocean Discovery Station (PODS) project.
Loyalty is at the heart of the store’s success. Callewaert
understands that it is his job to stock what people
need, and he takes that seriously. Conversely, many
locals feel a responsibility to shop there and support
the business, sometimes consciously bypassing other
stores on the Coast to shop closer to home. Callewaert
loves it when locals bring their guests and visitors to
the store as if it were a tourist attraction, to see all that
“our” store has to offer.
42

“It’s my store and I love it and am glad they provide to our small
community. [This customer easily lists off the names of eight people who
work there.] . . . Great people.”
IGA Madeira Park is an important provisioning stop for boats (and even
float planes) heading up or down the Strait and has received enthusiastic
write-ups in boating magazines. It is an easy stroll from the marina;
shoppers find all they need and are pleasantly surprised by their welcome.
It’s a common refrain, whether from locals who visit the store several
times a week or cruisers who pass through once a season: Troy greets
them by name.
Drama and durability. Comfort and creativity. Soul and setting. In other words, a
custom home built for inspired and artistic owners. ZOOM has decided to revisit
Ravenrock (first featured in the May–June 2010 issue), a Pender Harbour home
nestled in an arbutus haven atop a mountain, with views to die for.
The mountainside is fragrant with the warm sugary smell of buddleia and arbutus,
and the silence is total. No, not total. There’s the white-crowned sparrow, and
the towhee, and the chatter of tree swallows. Garter snakes rustle through
leaves on the forest floor. This is nature’s place, and in such a setting almost
any building would seem jarring. Not Ravenrock. This house positively embraces
and celebrates its location. The driveway turns into steep and textured concrete
as it sweeps between moss-covered rocks toward the house. The house itself
is minimal and modernist, kissing the rock at the back and jutting, as the land
slopes sharply down, toward the view in the front, very like someone standing at
a viewpoint and gesturing to friends to come see what he sees.
44

summer 2016 45

Entering at the lower level of the house, one is struck
(the first of many times) by the happy partnership
of form and function. This is the main reception area
(which doubles as the media room), and its floor
and walls are concrete, the house’s foundation. Dark
and textured custom cabinetry (by Nicolas Meyer—
nicospacecraft.com) on one entire wall provides
storage and display. A splash of burnt sienna behind
the media screen is the only colour, effectively echoing
the arbutus trees just outside the glass doors.
There’s a dramatic transition from the darkened lowerlevel
room up the stairs to the main part of the house,
bright and open, where, through one whole side of
floor-to-ceiling window, the view grabs the visitor by the
shirt front and doesn’t let go. Sweeping and complex,
the scene takes in Texada Island and the distant and
changeable Salish Sea, with Vancouver Island beyond.
Gerrans Bay looks quaint from here, with docks and
boating traffic, and no fewer than three (Garden Bay,
Hotel, and Mixal) lakes are visible. The topography
is just as interesting with its bumps and curves and
imposing Mt. Daniel just off to the left. Weather can
be seen approaching from a distance, and stormwatching
from here must be spectacular. What cannot
be seen are neighbouring houses. Not one.
This home’s owners understand that it’s all about the
view and are careful never to compete with it in their
décor choices. The colours are purposely neutral and
muted, always echoing what is outside: concrete, stone
greys and lichen greens. When a bit of visual interest
is desired, texture is employed. Basketry and weave
are used as decorative features throughout, along with
woven, undyed rugs. There is nothing fussy here. The
owners (with graphic design backgrounds) prefer the
harmony of consistent, simple, practical, and durable
furnishings.
Durability is a strong theme in this home. Polished
concrete floors inside give way to aluminum decking
outside the huge glass sliding doors. Thick glass railing
on the deck (by Instaglass of Sechelt), with no metal or
wood, leaves the view unobstructed.
This home was designed by a busy couple, to be
just what they need and no more. Consistent with
the newest trends in home-building (smaller, more
efficient, nature-embracing), the high ceilings and
glass make it seem spacious while the size is in fact
modest at a little under 2000 square feet.
46

life on the coast. in pictures.
summer 2016 47

The owners lived on site in a small rustic cabin for a year,
getting a real feel for the setting before putting their
heads together with Econ Group of West Vancouver (www.
econgroup.ca) to design the floor plan. They waited several
years before having the custom, built-in cabinetry installed,
because they wanted to be sure of what they needed.
And there are some features still to be installed (window
treatments, for instance, and a dropped ceiling to define the
kitchen space in the open-concept room) that they are not
sure they want. Simplicity can be addictive.
The house has only one official bedroom, which enjoys
the same astounding view, located beyond the great room
behind offset walls. The only inside door in the home is to the
second bathroom. This “no-doors” design adds greatly to the
feeling of simplicity and flow. For occasional house guests, a
Murphy bed in the back “flex area” (a multi-purpose space:
foyer, reading room, private nook . . .) next to the second
bathroom provides a convenient, comfortable sleeping
space. A separate carriage house about 50 meters down the
driveway functions as garage, storage, and office (keeping
clutter and stress out of the house). This can double as guest
accommodation as well. The 7.5-acre property has room for
a few small sleeping cabins, each with privacy and views, if
desired.
While overnight guests at Ravenrock might be a rarity, parties
are not. The spacious deck can easily accommodate fifty for
a cocktail party. A piano takes pride of place in the great
room. But not just any piano. This is a Yamaha Clavinova
digital grand piano. A handy microphone plugs in and, just
when you think things cannot get any more wondrous, you’ve
got a karaoke party. This is simply too much fun.
The owners of Ravenrock never forget to be considerate of
the other mountainside residents. They’ve placed a little
birdhouse at just the right height up a fir tree directly beside
the house. From there an unfledged tree swallow pokes his
head out and sings saucily while enjoying the view.
