Clinical ConsiderationUnder physiological conditions, inflammation is an adaptive responseaimed at restoring tissue integrity and functionality. The autonomicnervous system (ANS) plays an important role in modulating inflammatoryresponses. Physiologically, both the SNS and the peripheral nervoussystem (PNS) act synergistically to keep the inflammatory reactioncircumscribed. SNS/PNS imbalance can drive unabated or chronicinflammation, which in turn can drive processes that may lead to multiplecomplications including pathophysiological scars. Multiple complementaryand alternative medicine interventions, including MT, have demonstrated asolid capacity to rebalance ANS function back to homeostasis andtherefore may be an effective intervention for reducing or preventingpathophysiological scars (Moyer et al. 2004, Beider et al. 2007, Collet etal. 2014, Guan et al. 2014).
