Professional Ethics

The purpose of practicing our profession ethically is to promote and maintain the

welfare of the client. Through their behavior, professionals can comply both with

the law and with professional codes. If compliance with the law is the only

motivation in ethical behavior, the person is said to be practicing mandatory

ethics. If, however, the professional strives for the highest possible benefit and

welfare for the client, he or she behaves with aspirational ethics (Corey et al.

2006, Fritz 2013), see Box 8.2.
