Clinical Consideration

Here we see three mechanisms contributing to move it or lose it:

fibrosed/stuck (can’t move); it hurts (avoid moving or alter movement

pattern); and where the neural network that governs movement is affected

(can’t generate, control or coordinate movement).

The Nervous System: Wound Healing And Pathophysiological Scars

As noted in Chapter 4, the NS plays an important role in wound healing.

Noxious stimuli triggers the release of neuropeptides such as substance P and

calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) and certain growth factors such as NGF.

Neuropeptides are released from nerve terminals and also are stimulated by

cellular and chemical components involved in inflammation. (Lawman et al.

1985, Quinlan et al. 1998, Gibran et al. 2002, Muangman et al. 2004, Scott et al.

2007, Hanna & Katz 2011, Ogawa 2011, Chéret et al. 2013).

When all goes well, all is well, but multiple factors can contribute to impaired

wound healing, including neural mediated ones.
