Clinical Consideration

Fascia hydrodynamically responds to mechanically applied strain (e.g.

compression, stretch) via its sponge-like squeeze and refill mechanism in

the bioarchitecture of hydrophilic compounds (e.g. GAGs and PGs). This

suggests that some of the effects of manual therapy (e.g. changes in tissue

pliability, decreased stiffness, ease of movement, changes in the state of

under-hydrated tissues and reduced edema) can be attributed to changes in

fluid concentration and content (Klingler et al. 2004).
