Retinaculae in particular display a greater density of nerve receptors than
that typically seen in muscle bellies or some other soft tissues (Stecco et al.
2010). It is suggested that fascia plays an integrating function as a
proprioceptive organ and that it can coordinate the action of different
muscles by acting as a common ‘ectoskeleton’ (Jones 1944) or myokinetic
linkage system (Stecco 2004). For example, such is seen in the
