Clinical ConsiderationAlthough muscle spindles (stretch receptors) have traditionally beenassociated with muscle tissue, more recent research indicates that thesereceptors are embedded in myofascial tissue. Muscle spindle response todetectable stretch can be altered if myofascia (e.g. endo or perimysium) istoo rigid. In such cases, normal firing of the muscle spindles can be altered(Stecco 2004).
Clinical ConsiderationRetinaculae in particular display a greater density of nerve receptors thanthat typically seen in muscle bellies or some other soft tissues (Stecco et al.2010). It is suggested that fascia plays an integrating function as aproprioceptive organ and that it can coordinate the action of differentmuscles by acting as a common ‘ectoskeleton’ (Jones 1944) or myokineticlinkage system (Stecco 2004). For example, such is seen in thethoracolumbar region during locomotion and load lifting (Jones 1944,Vleeming et al. 1995, Graceovetsky 2007).
