Mechanoreceptors

Mechanoreceptors are specialized sensory receptors that respond to a variety of

stimuli (e.g. sound, touch, pressure, movement, tissue stretch and distortion). In

skin and fascia mechanoreceptor condensation varies widely and within an

expanse of tissue several types of mechanoreceptors can be present, thus

perception of various stimuli can occur simultaneously. Mechanoreceptors (this

includes proprioceptors – movement and positioning detectors) provide skin and

fascia with the ability to perceive tissue deformation (e.g. stretch, shear,

tensional load and pressure) and respond to such stimuli.
