PNS

The primary structures of the PNS include Schwann cells, peripheral nerves and

neural pathways (Fig. 4.5). Functionally, the PNS is divided into the somatic NS,

which controls voluntary activity, and the autonomic NS, which controls

involuntary activity – covered in greater detail later in this chapter.

Schwann Cells

Schwann cells, the principle glial cells of the PNS, produce myelin which

surrounds axons and assists with conductivity.

Peripheral Nerves

Nerves are commonly classified into categories based on the presence or absence

of myelin (e.g. myelinated and non-myelinated fibers), composition or function

(sensory, motor and mixed/associated) and origin (cranial or spinal) (Fig. 4.6).
