Skin Structure and FunctionIn order to better understand the formation of scar tissue, we need to look at themarvelous organ that is our skin.Along with the glands, hair and nails, skin makes up the integumentary system.On average, skin constitutes 10% of human body mass. Skin acts as a barrier tothe outside world and plays an important role in homeostasis. The skin, our outerlayer of protection, is susceptible to infections, injuries, growths, rashes, cysts,boils, discoloration, burns, adhesions and scars.
