The Preparation
The gifts of bread and wine are prepared with prayer. See Appendix for Rite of
Preparation. The priest may also say this prayer.
Prayer of Dependence
O Lord and King, condemn me not
as I draw near
to minister before your holy table
upon which your Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ,
is to be mystically set forth as a sacrifice.
Do not utterly reject your servant,
unprofitable though am I,
for I approach these divine and heavenly mysteries,
seeing that of my own self
I can do nothing;
but trusting that I can do all things
through Him Who strengthens me,
therefore, I pray,
God be merciful to me a sinner,
and in your abundant mercy
strengthen me for this service
by your Holy Spirit
and count me worthy
to make known, without condemnation,
your word of truth to your people,
through Christ our Lord
with Whom you are blessed
with your all-Holy Spirit
now and always and for ever and ever. Amen.
The Assembly
While the clergy vest, the rest of the Assembly devotes itself to silent, penitential prayer.
At the sound of the bell, the Priest along with Deacon and Thurifer enter the nave. The
Priest greets the Assembly.
Priest The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and
the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you
People and also with you.
Deacon Father, the blessing.
Having blessed the incense, the Priest then raises both hands in the midst of the People
and blesses God.
Appendix
Preparation of the Gifts
The Priest or Deacon reverences the gifts (three times) while saying:
God be merciful to me a sinner.
And then:
Lord, You have redeemed us, You have rescued us, You have ransomed
us, You have purchased us, bought with the price of Your own precious
blood, O most merciful one. By being nailed to the Cross and wounded by
the lance, You have become for all humankind the fount of eternal life.
Glory to You, our Saviour.
Blessed is our God at all times, now and always and unto the ages of ages.
Amen.
… takes up the lance and marks the loaf with the sign of the Cross three
times, saying each time,
In remembrance of our Lord and God and Saviour Jesus Christ.
… scores the loaf where it is to be broken at the fraction,
He was led as a sheep to the slaughter, and as an innocent lamb is silent
before his shearers, so He did not open His mouth. Who indeed shall
declare His generation? For His life was taken away from the earth. The
Lamb of God Who takes away the sins of the world is slain for the
salvation of the world.
… now pierces the loaf to mark off the fragment for the commixture.
One of the soldiers pierced His side with a lance, and at once there came
forth blood and water; and he who saw it bore witness, and his witness is
true.
… pours wine into the chalice and adds a few drops of water.
Blessed is the union of Your holy things, now and always, and unto the
ages of ages. Amen.
… veils the gifts, covers them and says:
With these gifts we commemorate also blessed Mary, the ever-virgin
Mother of God, and the holy angels, St. John Baptist and St. Joseph, and
blessed Patriarchs, Prophets, Apostles, Martyrs, Confessors, Doctors and
Holy Virgins, with Saints Anthony, Athanasius, Basil, Gregory, Augustine,
Patrick, David, Columba, Aidan, Cuthbert, Chad, Venerable Bede, Francis,
24

Dame Julian, Gregory Palamas, Catherine, Teresa, John of the Cross,
Seraphim, Silouan, Sophrony and our holy fathers/mothers (saints, patrons,
matrons founders, etc., N., N. and N...), through whose prayers do You,
O Lord, receive this sacrifice at Your heavenly altar.
… then says the Prayer of Offering:
God our Father,
You sent forth Your Son, our Lord and Saviour
Jesus Christ,
as heavenly bread, to be food for all mankind:
be pleased, we pray, to bless this offering
and to accept it on Your altar in heaven.
In Your love for us
remember those who offer it,
and those for whom it is offered,
for only by Your redeeming mercy
can we be counted worthy to celebrate these holy Mysteries,
and to praise and glorify Your holy Name,
Father, Son and Holy Spirit, now and always,
and for ever and ever. Amen.
