Suspensionat both ends was firm over bigbumps, but feedback from theÖhlins shock was outstanding.And the narrower 180-sectionrear Pirelli meant the 748 steeredeven more sweetly than the 916.Braking power from the bigiron Brembos was ferocious, too,with none of the sponginess thatearly 916 anchors were prone to.On that ride in 1995 the 748SP respondednear-perfectly to everycommand, whether I was howlingthe front tyre into a tight bend,carving through an empty roundabout,or burying my head behindthe screen for a nerve-wrackingflat-out blast on the over-policedA3.UncompromisingInevitably the exotic 748SP wasexpensive when new. The smallerengined model was also evenmore uncompromising, uncomfortableand demanding. But fortrack days or just hooning aroundon the roads with no particularplace to go, the SP was utterlymagical.Our SuperBike of the Year 1995 contest was SP armageddon.No less than three yellow Ducatis crapped themselvesduring the test. A cautionary tale for those buying oneseventeen years later.And the good news isthat all these years later theDucati delivers those thrillsfor temptingly little wedge. Awell cared-for, low-mileageSP — and you’d be brave to gonear one that wasn’t both thosethings — can be picked up fornot much more than R35,000.(Barely used “collector’s items”advertised for twice that priceshould be avoided unless you’replanning a museum.) That’sseriously good value for a ’90sicon that still gets the adrenalinepumping in way that fewbikes can match.
