We used to runthe kit electronics on the stocker, withthe traction control and everythingturned off, and on the superbike weran the Motec kit that everyone has touse in BSB, which doesn’t have tractioncontrol or anything. But even thoughwe used to run both bikes withouttraction control or anti-wheelie theyfelt different because they’re differentelectronic systems. So this year theidea was to make them both feel thesame and react the same, so both bikesnow run the kit ECU.”Hickman is convinced he can gofaster when he next races on the Isleof Man. He set the current outright laprecord of 135.452mph during the 2018Senior TT and only failed to better thatin 2019 because much of TT fortnightwas washed out by bad weather, so hehad very little practice, on a bike he hadnever ridden over the Mountain course.“Last year I did a 134.2 from astanding start on the superbike – abrand-new bike and after only two lapsof practice. We didn’t do anything to thebike, really, but we were still fast, so I’msure we can go quicker than the record,with what we’ve learned.”Hickman and Jones have no doubtabout one of the key secrets of theirsuccess at the TT, which during thelast two years numbers five victories,including one Senior, one Superbike,one Supersport and two Superstock,and four further podiums from 12 races.It is the tricky art of attacking the moststressful race of them all with a relaxedattitude.“We say it all the time: literallywe’re just a bunch of mates who goracing and we do all right,” says Jones.“That’s all it is really. I think that’s whatworks, especially at the TT, because youjust relax. Peter goes there to win, butif he doesn’t it’s no problem: we weren’tgood enough, so we’ll go again nextyear. Whereas some people go thereand have got to win.”
