Every kid gets a medal.”
The race, which goes from Philadelphia
Avenue to Grant Street along the beachfront,
is in memory of Kevin Murphy, an Atlantic
City firefighter and longtime member of the
Cape May Beach Patrol. He was described as
gregarious, positive and full of life.
The nighttime run raises money for the
Clete Cannone Scholarship Fund, helping
current and former Cape May lifeguards.
“It’s probably my favorite one of the
year to do,” Harry says. “It’s not putting any
money in my pocket but it will help someone
get to college. It’s just a blast.”
CAPE TO CAPE CHALLENGE
Sunday, August 18
Five-mile paddle in Cape May or 16-mile paddle
across the Delaware Bay
Fitness requirement: If you’re not the last child
of Krypton, try to get bitten by a radioactive spider
Kicking off in Lewes, Delaware and heading
for Cape May, “It’s a challenging race,” says
organizer Chad deSatnick. “It takes kind of
a unique individual to train for this event,
because there’s a psychological element to
it .”
Some strong paddlers report seeing the
Cape May Lighthouse and water tower in
the distance, but as they paddle and paddle,
they never seemed to get any closer.
The race starts in Delaware and crosses
the shipping lanes of the bay as you head
to Cape May. The organizers won’t even let
you attempt if they don’t believe you can
make it across within the time limit, meaming
their needs to be demonstrated ability
in other races, in lifeguard competitions or
elsewhere. The race committee will approve
some participants on a case-by-case basis.
One of the criteria is a willingness to listen
to advice and not try to finish at any cost.
After four-and-a-half hours, all riders are
obliged to give up and board one of the support
vessels
“We can’t have someone out there for
seven hours trying to make a personal
record,” Chad said. Only 50 people can participate
in the bucket-list crossing.
This year, there’s a five-mile rec paddle
close to home for the mere mortals who
want to participate, starting in Cape May
Point and heading around to Queen Street.
Bruckner Chase, who runs Ocean Positive,
is set to participate in the shorter race with
a number of adaptive athletes this year.
Chase’s group gets people with spinal cord
injuries and other limitations paddling on
the open water.
