ccording to a 2017 volunteerism survey
from Deloitte, the world’s leading
consulting firm, 77 percent of workers
surveyed tied volunteering directly
to employee well-being. Corporate
social responsibility isn’t just feel-good
marketing slogans and token volunteer
participation. And, businesses with a higher
percentage of employees who volunteer
on a regular basis benefit from a reputation
as good corporate citizens. Business and
community leaders such as 1st Source Bank,
Applebee’s Restaurant, and Chicago Title
know that serving Valparaiso isn’t just the
right thing to do; it’s good business.
“The encouragement to engage in the
community is simply embedded in our
values,” says Matt Vessely, 1st Source
Bank regional president in Porter and
LaPorte Counties. “It’s an expectation.
We’re in a mission-based business to serve
others, which includes being in service
to our communities.” 1st Source Bank is
headquartered in South Bend with 80
branches throughout northern Indiana and
southwest Michigan. Vessely says that the
company’s values of integrity, teamwork,
superior quality, outstanding client service,
and community leadership are at the heart
of everything 1st Source Bank does.
The way in which 1st Source employees
live out these values is evident in how
they serve in the community. 1st Source
Bank employees support dozens of
organizations, from serving on the
board of several local non-profits to
youth mentorship and instruction. “We
collectively logged nearly 3,000 volunteer
hours through Q3 2019, in the Valparaiso
region,” Vessely says. “Our team supports
dozens of organizations in the region
specific to their areas of interest and the
causes dear to them. The last time I looked,
we had 23 of our colleagues serving in 55
leadership roles in local organizations.”
Vessely serves on the boards of the Shirley
Heinze Land Trust; the Porter County
Community Foundation; the Valpo Parks
Foundation; the Regional Development
Company; the Valpo Chamber; and, is a
mission is to be a thriving and respected
restaurant company that creates experiences
where team members want to be, and, where
guests want to go. In order to do this, our
commitment is to be a part of the community.
We use the acronym PRIDE as our value system:
performance, respect, integrity, development,
and engagement. We encourage our team to
engage in the community with respect and
integrity.” Applebee’s is one of the world’s
largest casual dining brands with over 1,700
franchise restaurants.
Locally, Applebee’s is involved in organizations
including the Valparaiso Viking Quarterback
Club, Famous Athletics, All Star Angels,
Kiwanis, and Rolling Hills Vineyard Church.
funds childhood cancer research. Byers
says, “Through the Chamber, we had the
pleasure to meet Bob Carnagey from Folds
of Honor. He’s been an amazing partner
with us as RMH has raised money for Folds
of Honor twice this year. It’s been great to
work with our local partner who’s aided us,
in locally raising over $30,000 this year for
Folds of Honor. We’ve also partnered with
Alex’s Lemonade Stand for many years. We
create and build a lemonade stand for our
restaurant. We also raise funds through
beverage sales and monetary donations.”
Applebee’s also partners with local
organizations through Flapjack Fundraisers.
The organization sets up a fundraising
breakfast and provides the servers, hosts,
and bussers for the breakfast. Applebee’s
provides the cooks, facility, and the
breakfast. Partnering organizations have
included Famous Athletics, the Boone
Grove baseball team, ASA, and several
church groups. Byers says, “It’s a great team
building and fundraising opportunity in
which the organization receives a 50 percent
return (less the cost of food and labor).”
She adds that Applebee’s has partnered
with local Kiwanis organizations in Salute
the Recruits, Veteran’s Dinner, and Choc-olats
events which support the military and
children.
6 VALPARAISO MAGAZINE | WINTER 2020
“We’ve been blessed to have provided
free meals to veterans and active military
personnel for the last 12 years on Veteran’s
Day. We have the Bill and Kali Show as part
of the event, during which they interview our
veterans and share their stories. We work
with a local nursing home to honor their
veterans the next day since it’s hard for them
to get the bus out to join us on Veteran’s Day.
We partner with the local military community
to bring in some younger veterans to join the
nursing home residents for lunch so they can
still have a unique experience.”
“When one gives back, no matter how big
or small the effort is, you feel a sense of
inner peace and happiness that correlates
to your work and personal life,” says Jamie
Sulcer, Northwest Indiana sales manager
for Chicago Title Insurance Company, an
international Fortune 500 company which
provides products and services designed
for the real estate industry. Sulcer is the
immediate past president of the Valpo
Parks Foundation, the vice president of the
Northwest Indiana Builders Association,
and is a 15-year board member and past
president of Housing Opportunities.
Chicago Title employees volunteer their time
and resources to organizations including
the National Multiple Sclerosis Society,
Valparaiso High School Soccer Booster Club,
Relationships Matter, Delta Theta Tau, Team
Lead, the Porter County Veterans Treatment
Court Program, United Way,the Food
Bank of Northwest Indiana, and multiple
chambers of commerce.
Sulcer says, “Collectively, we’ve cleaned
up local parks; participated in a stuffed
animal drive for the United Way; supported
a dog supply drive for LakeShore Paws,
and food drive for the Northwest Indiana
Food Bank; helped build ValPLAYso; raised
money for scholarships; and sponsored and
raised money for many capital campaigns.”
She adds that the benefits that come from
community involvement lead to increased
productivity at work. “I feel that Chicago
Title has a great impact on people and
businesses that are moving into Northwest
Indiana. Giving back makes our communities
stronger and more desirable for people who
are moving here.”
Decisions for sponsorships and donations
are based largely on employees’ engagement,
and the company is more likely to
sponsor if an employee has a passion for
a specific organization. “Chicago Title has
strong community ties and we encourage
our employees to give back. Our employees
have built strong bonds by volunteering
together outside of our four walls. If we have
common interests with one of our clients,
introducing them to an organization they
may not have known about and seeing their
passion grow is exciting.” >>

BUSINESSES THAT VOLUNTEER YIELD BENEFITS
Staff members of Chicago Title in Valparaiso
>> Just as companies need to invest in
their employees’ professional growth, it’s
also essential to encourage and recognize
employees’ contributions to the community.
RMH Franchise features a weekly
community spotlight in its RMH internal
publication which focuses on employees’
community involvement. Byers says, “We
were honored at our General Manager
Conference this year for the impact we
had with Folds of Honor. Our restaurant in
Valparaiso raised the most money in May.
We were also recognized by Folds of Honor.
We offer incentives and recognize our
team members engaged in our community.
We’re allotted time during the week to
be active in the community. We’re also
active in Valpo Chamber meetings and we
participate in a major community event
once a month.”
Expressions of appreciation for employees’
contributions to the community are key,
too, whether it’s a simple thank you from
company leadership or public recognition.
“We do what we can to recognize our
colleagues personally, often with a simple
thank you from leadership or our executive
team,” Vessely says. “We also celebrate
this work on our social media channels with
posts focused on volunteerism, community
donations, and support we give across
our footprint. We provide an opportunity
annually for colleagues to be nominated
for the Ernestine M. Raclin Community
Leadership Award. But, ultimately, while
they appreciate the recognition, our
colleagues engage with the community
because it’s the right thing to do and they
find their service to be personally fulfilling.”
What’s personally fulfilling varies from
one person to another, which is why it’s
important to support employees in various
expressions of charitable contributions.
Sulcer says, “I think finding organizations
you feel passionate about and doing
whatever you can to help, whether that’s
manual work, tutoring, listening, or giving
money, makes our communities flourish.”
And, she adds, making community
service activities a family affair leaves
lasting memories that serve as lifelong
lessons for children. “We always
remember the building of ValPLAYso
that we painted or screwed together as
one of the best memories of our lives,”
she recalls of the project she did with her
husband and children.
Byers explains that her restaurant’s
community involvement isn’t simply about
helping others, because she and her
colleagues are the community too.
“We live here. The community is family,
friends, and neighbors. We’re here to
support one another. For those of us at
the Valparaiso Applebee’s, community
involvement creates a family-friendly
working environment. Our team knows
that we’re here to benefit our guests and
our community.” This past year was an
especially active one for the Valparaiso
Applebee’s team in the community,
and she credits their involvement as an
active Chamber member with helping
them connect with other community
organizations. “We’ve been able to send
out different managers and team members
to interact in the community. It lets our
community know that we’re a part of them.
If they need something, they can come to us
and we can help.”
The community where you do business
is important. As Vessely says, “We
understand, and firmly believe, that
our organization is nothing more than a
reflection of the communities we serve.
Therefore, it’s important for our team to
give back, and, do our part to be a good
neighbor and a strong organization in this
area. Doing so makes it better for everyone
– the bank, our colleagues, customers, and
all the residents in the community. Giving
back provides our colleagues with a deeper
sense of connection with each other as well
as the communities we serve when we can
get out and make a difference together.”
VALPO BUSINESS LEADERS SERVE MANY
10 VALPARAISO MAGAZINE | WINTER 2020

By Amanda Wilson
One individual can’t do everything, but one
other-minded person can affect many mightily.
Valparaiso is abundantly blessed by generous
individuals— leaders who continually, humbly,
and sacrificially serve in ways that enrich and
enhance the community in which they live and
work. We spoke with a few of Valpo’s servantleaders
for a glimpse into why they give back,
and, why giving back is a win-win for those who
give and those who receive.
Why do you give back?
“Early on in our marriage, we were able to meet some
wonderful people who were pretty radical in their
giving – including some who worked hard to live on
ten percent of their income in order to give away 90
percent of their income. It had a huge impact on us in
the way we think about giving.
They inspired us to be joyful givers, thinking of ways
to raise more money, give more, or anonymously
help a person or family. As a company, we also
encourage our employees to take time for
volunteerism and, at times, have worked together on
projects. One of our favorite days was going to St.
Agnes Adult Day Care Center as a team to grill and
serve lunch to everyone there.
We believe in living a life that is bigger than just
yourself. Each of the organizations we currently serve,
or have been a part of in the past, have moved us to a
point of action. When you can be a part of something
bigger than just you and your partner, and make a
• Valpo Creative Council
• Valpo Parks and Recreation Department Marketing Committee
How do you balance work and personal responsibilities
with community involvement? Why is the balance worth it?
“It’s not easy! As a mom, PhD student, and dedicated full-time associate
at AM Stabilizers, I must be extremely organized. My calendar is very
colorful! Having a husband (a fellow Valparaiso High School alum) who
is just as dedicated allows me to remain involved in the community.
Because he believes in me and deeply cares about Valpo, we often have
the pleasure of spending our quality time together at the many events
that pop up in Valparaiso.
Thinking about time management strategically is key for me. I always try
to make time for lunch with my daughter at school. Having an employer
who is not only flexible but who sincerely encourages wellness makes
this all possible. We make a great team!
I believe that when you love what you do, it doesn’t feel like work.
There’s a natural flow that comes from working on various things that
complement each other. That said, there are easier days than others. I’ve
learned it’s extremely important for me to be involved in works that are
both meaningful for me and takes advantage of my talents.
Serving the community is not only fulfilling, it leverages your work. It’s
the difference between the ordinary and extraordinary. Giving back to
your community reinforces a positive connection with those around you,
models selflessness, fosters compassion, and informs a stronger work
ethic. It develops qualities that strengthen teamwork and dedication to
a greater cause.” Continued on pg. 14>>
“I can remember as far back as grade school when my teachers
would express to my mom the joy of having me in class because I
was always willing to help others when needed. The credit union
philosophy of ‘people helping people’ is what drew me to the credit
union industry and to REGIONAL. Part of my responsibility is to be
in the community, and it’s nice to be part of an organization that’s
committed to the local community. REGIONAL gives my fellow team
members and me the support we need to be as involved as we want
to be.
As a mom of two boys, I’ve always been drawn to organizations that
are targeted towards youth. My husband, Matt, and I hope that we
can teach our sons through our involvement that volunteering on any
level is the right thing to do. In addition, we want them to recognize
that individuals and families who give back is what makes Valparaiso
such a great place in which to live and raise a family.
Building relationships is the heartbeat of our community. By
volunteering in various organizations in Valparaiso and the
surrounding counties, I can build meaningful relationships both
at work and on a personal level. I believe that we should leave our
community better for the next generation. People that work and live
in Valparaiso are great people, and it’s been a great journey getting
to know others. I’ve seen success professionally because of this and
felt personally fulfilled in knowing that I’ve made a difference.
The business community and nonprofit community must be
intertwined so that the citizens of Valparaiso benefit. While
it’s important to be a strong business leader, it’s also important to
lead with compassion and grace, and give back to our community.”
Valpo’s Young Professionals
Seek to Serve
Young professionals represent the generation of more, though it isn’t
the “more” that social media clichés would lead you to believe. It’s
more about a career that isn’t just a paycheck. Young professionals are
increasingly weaving community outreach into their career goals and
company missions.
By Amanda Wilson
For Ahna Dunn, assistant director of sales for NITCO, working for a
company which supports local business and non-profits allows her
to continually seek out ways to extend that service to the community
at large. As Dunn succinctly summarizes, although NITCO stands for
Northwestern Indiana Telephone Company, or, NetNITCO, it is not the
old-school dial-up company of yesteryear. NITCO offers fast, reliable
Internet service for Valparaiso as well as advanced phone systems and
HDTV service. Dunn says her main passion in her role at NITCO is helping
small businesses upgrade to fiber, the greatest Internet available. “It’s
always rewarding to help a customer switch to a better product with
superior customer support, often at a lower cost.”
Dunn serves in the Kiwanis Club of Valparaiso as a member of the
board of directors; chairperson for the human and community
cares committee; co-chair for the
membership committee; member
of the greeters committee; and
as a regular fundraiser and event
volunteer for the club. “I love using
Kiwanis as a structured outlet to
volunteer and spread kindness,”
she says. “Valparaiso has one of
the largest Kiwanis clubs in the
world, which is saying a lot for a
city of 30,000 people! The club’s
reach far outweighs my own, which
makes my personal impact so much
greater. Working together, we can
achieve abundantly more. I am
incredibly proud to be involved with the caring, service-oriented,
Community-wide impact is part of the mission and appeal of
>> a community environment where
people can come in, kick back,
drink some coffee, and have fun,”
says owner Jose Escalera. Escalera,
who also hosts the podcast Classic
Talk 2.0, says he’s always been
entrepreneurial, the barbershop
dream originated with his friend and
Classic Cuts barber, Mike. “When we
decided to open the shop, I chose
Valpo because I love the vibe of
downtown. I love the shop with the
checkerboard floors that have been
there since the 1800s, the brick on
the wall. We specialize in shaves
for men. We wanted to bring that
old-school feel to our barber shop.”
The Classic Cuts team also includes
stylists, Mazie and Corissa, as well as
social media director, Rose.
Escalera’s passion for giving back was honed early on in childhood.
A pastor’s son, he was raised to believe that one should share his
blessings, yet Escalera and his family benefited from others sharing
with them too. “We grew up really poor,” he recalls. “As a kid, I
remember going to back-to-school rallies and taking a backpack to get
school supplies. I remember when my church used to do a toy drive for
Christmas. We’d give kids toys and I’d get one myself because I didn’t
have a toy.” This experience prompted Escalera and his barbershop
colleagues to do a back-to-school giveaway last August in which they
gave 144 haircuts and school supplies to Porter County kids in need
ages 13 years and younger. This past holiday season, Escalera teamed
up with Zoseco Coworking Space owner Eric Zosso and friend Jamie
Pieszchala to create The Perfect Christmas with the goal of providing
100 local families with Christmas trees, decorations, clothing, and
presents. A collaboration between local businesses, churches, and
town trustees helped make The Perfect Christmas possible for families
blessed by the program.
Community support is a key component to helping area businesses
thrive. Meridian Title Corporation Account Manager Brooke Leonard’s
experience as an ambassador for the Valpo and Portage chambers
reinforced this wisdom. Through ribbon cuttings and mingles, she
says, “I love being able to support new business owners on what may
possibly be their biggest endeavor. Everyone deserves the support of
the community when starting a business.” Meridian Title provides real
estate services in 34 office locations, and its over 200 employees have
contributed over 7,000 volunteer hours in the community.
Leonard credits her promotion this year to account manager as
one that has provided the opportunity to get more involved in the
community. She serves as the treasurer of the home and school
board for Nativity of our Savior Catholic School in addition to
serving as the co-chair of Nativity Church’s Bingo program. Her
experience as a member of the Valpo Leadership Academy has been
a tremendous learning experience which she would recommend to
anyone seeking to develop leadership skills and learn more about
volunteer opportunities in the community. She’s also served with
the United Way and recently with Housing Opportunities. And, she
adds, serving meals as a Meals on Wheels fill-in volunteer blesses her
just as it blesses the clients she helps. “After my third time delivering
Meals on Wheels to clients on my route, I was excited to see them and
remembered their names. They all make me smile.”
Though Dunn believes that the desire for engaging and purposeful
work is one that transcends generational divides, she says young
professionals’ expectations are tied to an ever-evolving environment.
“I don’t believe that young professionals from generations before
mine were any less interested in finding fulfilling and purposeful
work, but they might not have had the tools available to find those
opportunities.” She points to the Internet as an especially powerful
aide for young professionals seeking more fulfilling work. Yet, the
tool that most changes the community is freely available to everyone:
kindness. Dunn says, “It’s about kindness and fostering the type of
community that I want to live in. Everyone benefits from kindness.”
I WANT TO BE
KNOWN AS
SOMEONE WHO
IS INVOLVED IN
THE COMMUNITY
TO MAKE A
DIFFERENCE...
— Leonard
Leonard loves being an account
manager but says she doesn’t want
her career to be the sole thing
that defines her. And, she seeks
to inspire change by encouraging
her nine-year-old son to actively be
the change he wants to see in his
community. “I want to be known
as someone who is involved in the
community to make a difference, and
I want my son to see how important
it is to be part of the change you
want to see in your life or community.
Anyone’s circumstances can change
in the blink of an eye. The world
around us changes so quickly and
you never know what’s going to
happen. I’m a firm believer that you
get what you give.”
Escalera, who has also participated
in the Chefs Around the Table
fundraiser, continually seeks out
new ways to encourage people
to connect with their community
and to chase their dreams. Though
entrepreneurism is often associated with profit, his passion is primarily
driven by his heart for people. Money does matter in business but, as
he says, “Money comes and goes. People don’t. Money is paper that
sits in a bank account. People are real. I love being an entrepreneur
and I love helping people. I can make all the money in the world, but
if I’m not changing someone else’s life – if I’m not benefiting someone
else’s life – what’s the point of it?”
Salute to
Leadership
By Darlene McCarty Cohn
Each year, the Valpo Chamber recognizes the
accomplishments of two business leaders who
embody a spirit of selfless dedication to the
community. This year, H. Jonathon Costas,
attorney, business owner, and former Valparaiso
City Mayor, will receive the 2019 Distinguished
Community Leader award. Randall Zromkoski,
managing member at Blachly, Tabor, Bozik &
Hartman, will receive the 2019 Legacy of Service
award. Both recipients of these awards were
nominated by their peers.
2019 Distinguished
Community Leader
Mayor Jon Costas
City of Valparaiso 2003-2019
The Distinguished Community Leader Award
is the highest recognition the Chamber confers on
an individual member of the business community.
Recipients have demonstrated leadership, active
involvement in the greater Valparaiso business
community, reputation among business leaders,
success in promoting business and industry
development, overall contribution to the community
and its quality of life, and professional activities.
While many hardworking men and women have
contributed to the growth and development of
Valparaiso, H. Jonathon “Jon” Costas’s dedication
and impact on the community are remarkable.
Jon Costas was born in Gary, IN, but moved to
Valparaiso with his family when he was ten years old.
Growing up, he attended Valparaiso Community
Schools and worked in his father’s grocery store,
Costas Foods. Costas says he loved growing
up in Valparaiso. The schools, parks, and sports
opportunities were important to his childhood. He
fondly recalls ice skating in Rogers Lakewood Park
and playing on the first Pop Warner football team.
A leader has to build
bridges to cement a
community, working
with the business
and labor, education,
non-profit, faith,
and government
organizations.
BER FOCUS
Costas attended St. Joseph’s College and
received a B.A. in Administration. He met
his wife of 40 years, Sharon, while attending
a church youth group after college. Costas
went on to study law at Valparaiso University,
graduating with high distinction. The small
family moved to Indianapolis where Costas
involved himself in law and politics. His
father, William P. Costas, was a State Senator,
and Costas not only worked on his father’s
campaigns, but also served as a researcher
and speech writer for other politicians,
including Mike Pence.
The young family ultimately returned to
Valparaiso because, as Costas puts it, “There
comes a point when you want to put down
roots.” He has owned small businesses in
Valparaiso for over 40 years. Currently, he
operates six restaurants in partnership with
his son, Evan. He and his wife have four
children and four grandchildren.
Costas won his first election to Valparaiso
City Council in 1995. He has remained a
steady presence in local government since.
When he won the mayoral race in 2003,
Costas quickly set about developing the
city administrative staff, adding a City
Administrator as well as other key officials.
He says he wanted “leaders at all levels” and
made that a priority. The new team got right
to work implementing what became known
as The Costas Plan. In developing it, he says
he felt “We could be better than we were.” He
explains he always saw his role as mayor to
be “focused on the future.”
In his 16-year tenure as Mayor, Costas and
his team have improved the city in so many
ways, it’s impossible to list them all. The
most visible development is the creation of
Central Park Plaza and the Urschel Pavilion,
but, as Costas explains, “A lot of what we’ve
done, people don’t even see. There are
transformations all over.”
Costas spearheaded improvements to the
city’s utilities and infrastructure, housing
developments, transportation upgrades
and beautification projects. He oversaw
the development of the V-Line city bus
system and the ChicaGo Dash commuter
bus, improved roads, added bike lanes and
sidewalks all over the city, and, of course,
built roundabouts. Façade grants helped
Randall Zromkoski
Blachly Tabor Bozik
& Hartman, LLC
revitalize the downtown area, and
beautification projects popped up citywide.
Valparaiso residents are enjoying a higher
quality of life because of these endeavors,
and the community is more attractive to new
businesses. Costas says, “It makes me happy
when people tell me, ‘I take pride in my city
and tell people about it.’”
Through it all, Costas is guided by his faith.
He is an Elder Chair at Calvary Church and
has a Master’s degree in Theology. His
guiding principle is humility: “Humility is the
second most powerful force in the universe
next to love.” While Costas acknowledges
his hard work to improve Valparaiso for its
residents, he is quick to share the credit with
everyone else who has been a part of these
projects. He says, “A leader has to build
bridges to cement a community, working with
the business and labor, education, non-profit,
faith, and government organizations. If those
pillars are strong, the community is strong.”
2019 Legacy
of Service
The Legacy of Service Award recognizes
individuals in the community who, over
time or under extraordinary circumstances,
have given service to the community
above and beyond what is expected in
their profession. Recipients have created a
legacy of community service and serve as an
example for others to emulate. This year’s
Legacy of Service award winner is Randall
Zromkoski. He is Managing Member of the
Blachly, Tabor, Bozik & Hartman law firm. He
has long been a mental health advocate and
has held leadership and board positions
with Porter-Starke Services, Mental Health
of America Porter County, the Valpo
Chamber, United Way of Porter County,
Junior Achievement, and St. Elizabeth Seton
Church, among others.
Zromkoski grew up in New Chicago,
Indiana. He attended Andrean High School,
Wabash College, and Valparaiso University
Law School. He and his wife JoEllen >>
“I truly value that I have been given a great
and the community I have called home. I
I feel a strong
— Zromkoski
Zromkoski has
been actively
serving the
community
since his
college days.
It’s tough
at times,
but always
rewarding.
He says,
“Involvement
is at its best
when you give the whole of yourself to
the project.”
He tells a poignant story of when he first
realized the impact of volunteering. As a
college student, he worked as the Campus
Coordinator supporting the local chapter
of Special Olympics. His fraternity coached
Olympians living with profound disabilities,
whom he describes as “amazing.” Many
of these athletes lived at a local nursing
home. One woman Zromkoski worked with,
Helen, was in a wheelchair, didn’t have the
use of her arms, and used her feet for many
tasks instead. Zromkoski says she “had
a gift for letting you know what she was
thinking.” When the nursing home planned
a formal holiday dance for its residents,
Helen asked Zromkoski to be her date. He
fondly remembers how the residents were
dressed up in their finest and so excited.
At the dance, he lifted Helen out of her
wheelchair and danced with her. Her joy was
irrepressible, and he says it was a “very loving
and rewarding moment.” This was when he
realized “the incredible gift involvement is.”
Zromkoski cites a laundry list of community
leaders who have inspired him and fostered
his passion for service. “I am fortunate to
have the support of my family, partners,
and the folks I am in business with.” He
says Blachly, Tabor, Bozik & Hartman is
“committed as a firm to being involved with
the community and service.” Above all, he
thanks his wife. “She is the best example of
inherent goodness, nurturing, unconditional
love, and support.”
His advice to anyone looking to get further
involved in community service: “Search
for something you know in your heart
you’re passionate about and move in that
direction. Putting your heart and soul into
an organization or project is the best way to
reap the rewards.”
The Valparaiso community is lucky to count
such dedicated and talented people among
its leaders. Congratulations to H. Jonathon
Costas and Randall Zromkoski, and thank you
for all you do.
A LOOK BACK
>> A LOOK
City ‘Gives’ Up Its Only
Main Street *
V
Provided by Kevin Pazour
alparaiso Now No Longer May Boast It Is a Part of
That Nation Honored Thoroughfare.
“No longer will Valparaiso citizens hear the revered name
of Main Street when the names of local thoroughfare are
mentioned. Only in memory and by casual reference will the
street, famous in novels and wise cracks, be called to mind.
The city council at its adjourned session Tuesday evening took
action erasing the last vestige of Main Street as it now exists—
from Garfield Avenue to Roosevelt Road.
Prior councils had shorn Main Street of much
of its mileage when the part of it extending
from Garfield Avenue on the east, to Joliet
bridge on the west, was designated
as Lincolnway.
The recent changing of Campbell Street to Campbell Road,
makes three streets in the city which have undergone
transformation within the last week.
Fourteen ordinances were adopted by the city at last night’s
meeting. Councilmanic approval was necessary to permit
the printing committee to secure publication which has been
hanging fire for some time. Until a recent codification was
made by Attorneys Owen Crumpacker and Glen Dye, no
attempt had been made to publish the acts since 1895.
One of the principal ordinances adopted provided for a
$10 license fee and $1,000 bond for house movers. The old
ordinance provided a $500 bond, but this had been repealed.
Another important ordinance was establishing street grades
about the city. These grades covered about 25 typewritten
pages. They will not be published but merely copied in the
clerk’s books in one place and reference made to them in the
acts so to make it possible to locate them.
This was ordered back in 1919 when Lincoln
Highway was established through the city.
The eastern terminus of the street which
was not used as a part of the state road
traffic being routed over LaPorte Avenue,
was never changed and it always
remained as Main Street.
While the city never altered the name,
others did. The last telephone
directory published by Joseph Decker
gives the addresses of persons living
on the Main Street stretch, as Lincolnway.
At the same it was taking action on Main
Street, Alderman Charles Hicks brought up
the question of changing Axe Avenue.
He believed that the street could be better
located if given the same name as the street
of which it practically forms a part, Morgan
Street. He suggested Morgan Place, and
informed the council that practically all the
property owners were in favor of the change.
Alderman Hicks recently moved on the street,
which forms a jog on the south end of Morgan Street.
Still another pertained to the keeping of dogs and their
running at large, loud barking, viciousness, muzzling,
and inoculation.
Other ordinances hit at the burning of leaves on
asphalt pavements, and planting certain kinds of
trees; provided for construction of only concrete or
cement sidewalks; against posting of bills on telephone
poles, excepting legal notices; reorganizing the fire
department; defining the city limits; prohibiting
cutting in of funeral processions and display of
white flags by funeral cars; regulating order
of business at council meetings, and
fixing license fees of $50 per year for
circuses, carnivals and hippodromes,
and $10 for dance halls.”
President and owner of Dean’s
Landscaping Dean Savarino is a
self proclaimed perfectionist. And
in his line of work, that is a good
thing. “No one is pickier than I am
when it comes to our work,” chuckles Savarino,
whose full service landscape company has
serviced clients throughout Northwest Indiana
and the Chicagoland area for over 20 years.
With more and more homeowners staying in
their homes far longer than they had originally
planned, the idea of making the most with
what you have is certainly the goal for many.
Creating an outdoor living environment that
seamlessly ties into the feel of the home is one
home improvement goal that remains high on
the list of wants for homeowners.
“People are staying put these days, but are
constantly looking for ways to reinvest in their
home,” he says. “Our customers are looking
to improve their yards, and often this includes
creating a beautiful outdoor living area. I love to
show the client the true potential of the space.
Sometimes that could mean the addition of a
pathway, small seating area or a simple water
feature.”
Of course, the Northwest Indiana and
Chicagoland area is filled to the brim with
landscapers that can come out to cut the grass
every two weeks. Yet, the discerning homeowner
is looking for more - - and countless people
look no further than the talented team at
Dean’s Landscaping. Based in Schererville,
the company brings an artistic outlook on
the idea of landscaping. Whether it’s a small
enhancement of an outdoor living space or a
large total transformation, the talented staff
of certified landscape installers and certified
chemical pplicators can make your landscape
dreams a reality.
“We put much value on our ability to truly
listen to our clients, but we also want to educate
our clients throughout the process also,” says
Savarino. “In terms of current trends, everyone
seems to be looking for lots of color but low
maintenance and we can assist our clients with
the products and features that will work best.
We are definitely an out of the box landscaping
company. We are proud of the installation
techniques and design elements that we can
offer to our customers that can make their
space much more than just your ordinary patio.
Rather, we can look at the space and the home
and visualize how it’s the finished product will
look. For example, we like to use colors and
flowers that will remain a constant interest
throughout the season.”
Their expertise also allows the company
to trouble shoot the site for any possible
landscape design limitations, and make the
necessary preparations to ensure everything
goes as planned. Of course, no patio, whether
big or small, will truly come to life without
constructing the floor surface first. Dean’s
Landscaping’s extensive use of patio pavers
certainly helps them stand out amongst their
competitors. The durable, low maintenance
brick pavers come in an array of colors and
styles, and create a look that your family and
friends won’t soon forget.
“We have partnered with the best
manufacturers and suppliers in the
industry to get the top-notch products that
will guarantee the most durable and beautiful
construction,” says Savarino. “Our pavers are
from Belgard, a world-class manufacturer of the
widest varieties of pavers.”
To better ensure their work, Dean’s
Landscaping offers a 7 year warranty on
all of their Belgard brick work, combined
with Belgard’s lifetime warranty that can be
transferred from homeowner to homeowner if
needed. “I love being able to use hardscaping
to create something not only beautiful, but
artistic,” says Savarino, whose company received
the coveted World Class Award for 2011 Best in
Class from Belgard via a Midwest competition
amongst landscape contractors from Illinois,
Wisconsin, Indiana and Southwest Michigan.
“It’s all about utilizing pavers in an intriguing
way to create a beautiful space.”
Throughout their 20 year history, Savarino
says he has constantly looked at ways
to expand the company from its roots
as a simple landscaping company with
45Th St.
a limited number of services to offer.
One of the best examples of this never
ending expansion was the opening of
their Garden Center just over six years
ago. Located at 238 Kennedy Avenue
in Schererville, their Garden Center offers a
wide variety of trees, shrubs and annual flowers
along with a range of lawn and landscape
supplies for the true do it yourselfer.
“The Garden Center is just another way that
we can give our clients something above and
beyond what they are expecting,” says Savarino,
whose Garden Center has been recognized as a
Best of the Region. “We are thrilled that this
is the first year that we are growing our own
perennials that we can then go ahead and use
in our hardscaping. Having a hand in the
growth of a more excellent product is extremely
gratifying.”
And for Savarino, having the chance to
expand on his personal and passion to create
unique outdoor living area has also been a
gratifying experience. Driving home from a
busy day at work, Savarino passes by a number
of homes. The owners of these homes were once
given the title of clients. Yet, these days, many
have earned the title of friends.
“There is a definite sense of pride knowing
that we had our hands in there from start
to finish,” he explains. “Watching a family
grow and 6-10 years down the line, they are
still enjoying the space…it’s just extremely
rewarding.”
DestinationNEXT
Futures Study
For over 30 years, Indiana
Dunes Tourism’s (IDT)
mission has been to
introduce Northwest
Indiana to the world—one article, one post, and one video at
a time. This year, IDT partnered with Destination International
(DI) and Next Factor to evaluate the Indiana Dunes destination
and brand. We know that destination promotion strongly
improves the appeal for tourism and economic development,
so we asked key stakeholders in tourism, business, education,
and government leaders impacted by the region’s ability to
attract visitors to complete a survey and help us create an
accurate snapshot of the Indiana Dunes area.
Destination Strength & Community Alignment
The DestinationNEXT Futures Study used a “Scenario Model”
to analyze key factors of our destination, including many
talking points you’ve probably heard from Tourism before,
like the availability of local accommodations, attractions,
and places to eat and drink. Informed by over 290 other
destinations worldwide who have benefited from the
results of this diagnostic tool, our research aimed to identify
Indiana Dunes’ strengths as a destination and areas to seek
improvement in the future.
EXPLORERS
The survey results, in addition to information gathered
throughout the Futures Study and during IDT’s fall Destination
Innovation Workshop, showed positive trends in our strengths
as a destination and in our communities’ perception of Tourism
as an economic driver. Using the data collected from our 117
survey responses, DI’s Scenario Model assessment placed
Indiana Dunes at the top of its class.
