Welcome to J’AIME
As another month rolls by, we’re all adjusting to
the ‘new normal’, with coronavirus lockdown
restrictions gradually easing and shops and
businesses preparing to reopen in a safe way.
It’s been a time of huge change, with businesses
needing to adapt quickly to new ways of working
in order to make their environments as safe
as possible for the general public. We chat to
one of Lichfield’s oldest businesses, auctioneer
Richard Winterton, about operating around
the pandemic and how they’ve had to adapt to
thrive.
With Men’s Health Awareness Week taking
place from June 15 to 21, we take a look at a
few pertinent issues. We chat to Birmingham
photographer Gary Lindsay-Moore, whose
unique ‘dudeoir’ experiences aim to give men a
confidence boost in front of the camera, while
personal trainer Raul Romero takes a look at
why men may be more affected by coronavirus
than women, and psychotherapist Alan Dovey
examines the changing landscape of men’s
mental health.
It’s also Father’s Day on June 21, so we round up
a selection of treats for the special man in your
life.
If you fancy a little lockdown treat, we’ve
rounded up some of our favourite local foodie
options available for delivery and collection,
while The Gintleman returns with news of a
brand new at-home gin tasting experience.
And if you’re getting the holiday blues, the travel
experts at RB Collection take a look at what the
post-lockdown holiday landscape might look like
with some luxurious, private getaways.
Remember, with this online version you can click
directly through to all websites mentioned from
our pages and adverts - so why not take a look?
We hope to be back printing and delivering
J’AIME very soon, but in the meantime follow
us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter for the
latest updates. Stay safe!
BIRMINGHAM PHOTOGRAPHER GARY LINDSAY-MOORE IS AIMING TO COMBAT THE PRESSURE
MEN FEEL ABOUT THEIR LOOKS AND THEIR BODIES WITH A UNIQUE PHOTOGRAPHY EXPERIENCE
DESIGNED TO BOOST SELF-ESTEEM. AMY NORBURY DISCOVERS MORE
Just like their female counterparts, men today are
under ever-increasing pressure to have so-called
‘perfect looks’, with many feeling more body
conscious than ever before. After all, you only have to
look at the cast of reality TV favourite Love Island to
be faced with a near-impossible- to-match standard
of the perfect body, while men’s health magazines
are packed with male models with washboard abs
and square jaws.
It’s all too easy to feel judged - and to judge yourself
for any imperfections.
While women are more often under perceived
pressure to be ‘slimmer’, with an emphasis on
‘dropping dress sizes’, for men the stereotypical ideal
of bodily attractiveness means being ‘bigger’, more
muscled, and even taller - not something any of us
have any control over.
For some men the results of this pressure can affect
their mental health, often leading to a dislike of their
own body and lack of confidence to stand in front of
a camera.
Birmingham-born professional photographer
Gary Lindsay-Moore is aiming to combat those
‘ideal’ standards and to help men feel better about
themselves through a creative male-only photography
experience designed to celebrate individuals, just the
way they are.
Gary’s unique Dudeoir Experience allows men
to embrace their bodies in front of the camera -
wrinkles, scars and all - in a safe, caring, inclusive
and welcoming environment, bringing out their
own individual personality either in a studio or on
location.
“I know from first-hand experience what it is like to
be trolled on social media and called ‘fat and ugly’ by
a total stranger; it can really erode your confidence.”
says Gary.
“As an actor and mature model I have experienced
what it is like on both sides of the camera. I want
to break down barriers and give something that is
PHOTOGRAPHER GARY
LINDSAY-MOORE IS ALSO AN
ACTOR AND MATURE MODEL
completely individual to the client, not the same old
tried and tested studio setup every time; we are all
individual.”
Gary’s Dudeoir Experience launched in February,
but the project was temporarily curtailed due to
Covid-19 and the subsequent lockdown restrictions.
But with Men’s Health Awareness Week taking place
this month from June 15 to 21, it seems the ideal time
to talk about male body pressures - and in particular,
the effect they have on male mental health.
“What I’ve seen in the past few years is that many
guys are feeling the same as women; they’re not
feeling good about themselves, they’ve got body
issues because there are these guys on the TV who
clearly spend a lot of time in the gym and they like to
6

show it off, with Love Island being a prime example.
“And here I am, I’m 60 this year, I’ve got a bit of a
belly, I’ve got scars and tattoos, I have hair but it’s
going a bit thin on the top, and I think I’ve done
quite well to get here to this age with what I’ve got,
and I’m proud of it. I embrace who I am and I think
other guys should do it too.”
So what does a Dudeoir Experience involve?
“In its simplest terms, it’s the male version of
boudoir,” explains Gary. “Boudoir focuses on real
women, and being a little bit sexy - and guys can do
that too.
“That sexiness isn’t necessarily an overt thing or top
of the agenda when it comes to guys so much, but
there’s nothing wrong with feeling sexy when you’re
on a shoot.”
Boudoir became hugely popular in 1920s America
where women would pose for photographs to be sent
to husbands or lovers.
“What I like about boudoir is that it isn’t about
nudity; it’s about evoking a mood, it’s about a little
bit of suggestion, it’s a little bit cheeky,” says Gary.
“It’s allowing yourself to think ‘here I am’, in this
GARY’S DUDEOIR
EXPERIENCE AIMS
TO BOOST MALE
CONFIDENCE
little creative bubble. And it can be theatrical, which
I also love.
“One of the things I noticed when doing boudoir
is that it’s something the ladies might not normally
have done, but it’s a little bit of an experience and
something to make them feel more positive about
themselves.”
On a shoot, Gary encourages clients to be themselves
and feel comfortable in their own skin and their
clothing - whatever they choose to wear. He
works with each person to tailor the shoot to their
personality, bringing in props and outfits when
needed and offering a wide variety of locations,
from the studio, to woodland, beaches, edgy urban
backdrops and more.
“As a photographer, my job is to make people feel
their best, and be positive,” says Gary. “People find it
more difficult to give compliments to men - and men
find it more difficult to receive compliments - but
that’s just who I am.
“When it comes to shoots, some guys have an idea
of what they want, whereas some guys will let things
evolve. I work with a lot of guys who are quite
nervous to start, but really relax into it and
take themselves out of their comfort zone,
getting amazing pictures.
“There was one guy who was very up for
the dudeoir experience, but he was really
worried about what to do with his hands and
his feet, and I just say ‘let me worry about
that for you’ because what I see is actually
visually very different to what you’re seeing
when you’re in front of the camera.”
Gary has honed his craft over 35 years
through creative projects, portraits,
funerals, events and live music. He studied
photography at the University of Gloucester
after initially toying with the idea of going
into fine art with a bias towards life drawing,
attracted by the instantaneous nature of the
camera.
His early career saw him assist the famous
people photographer Sandra Lousada, who
has photographed the likes of Steven Berkoff
and Vanessa Redgrave.
“I moved to London and it was the early
Eighties so finding a full-time job as an
assistant was a nightmare,” Gary recalls.
“I threw myself into jobs and was really
fortunate to work with some really, really
good photographers, including Robyn
Beeche, an Australian photographer
7

famous for her work on the New
Romantics scene.”
“But Sandra was just amazing; she
shot a lot of high class celebrities
of the day and was incredibly well
connected. She also did a lot of the
studio photography for the Vogue
Complete Beauty book, which was
in print for about 25 years.
“Sandra taught me indispensable
techniques to get better pictures
than the usual. One of the things
was linked to what I learned as
a student about posture. A lot of
models already know about good
posture but Sandra was really good
with people who weren’t models.
“She was one of the hardest
workers too; she hated leaving
things to chance and she recorded
absolutely everything. She was an
inspiration and I had some great
experiences working with her.”
Gary’s professional photography
already attracts interest from a
diverse range of communities and
he is hopeful that the Dudeoir
Experience will promote wellbeing
and help clients feel proud of who
they are.
Primarily a purveyor of gauzy and
nostalgically charged portraits, his
work expresses influences from
the dark, brooding moods of
Deborah Turbeville, the vivid decadence of Grace
Coddington and Sheila Rock, and the fiercely dense
contrasts of Brett Walker and Helmut Newton.
Themes of retro Hollywood glamour, punks, whimsy
and dark curios are prominent in his portraits too.
“I love the fantasy element and the dark side of
fairytales, but bringing these into an urban setting,”
says Gary. “I want you to express yourself anyway
you desire and throw away the rule book.”
As well as his Dudeoir Experience Gary also works
with terminally ill clients and their families providing
a sensitive and caring approach to their photoshoot.
He has also donated his services free of charge to a
local hospice.
Gary has enjoyed two solo exhibitions, the first
showcasing his well-known photography of urban
Birmingham, and Badwonderland which depicts the
darker side of Alice in Wonderland.
BIRMINGHAM
PHOTOGRAPHER GARY
LINDSAY-MOORE
His photography also acts as a love letter to the
industrial landscapes of the city he calls home,
resulting in six self-published books on the changing
urban jungle of Birmingham.
And as life gradually starts to return to some sense of
normality, Gary is keen to get back behind the lens.
Gary said: “I have generally been chilling out but
also setting up a few interesting collaborations, and
I’ve been out in the locality shooting lockdown
urban landscapes, which may eventually get a small
exhibition.
“I’m ready to photograph anyone that should be
interested as soon as the restrictions are lifted, though
there is no reason a socially distancing shoot could
not be achieved with planning and care.
“I’m ready for the people that may need a fun
diversion to this unusual experience.”
Al fresco
feasts
AS we head into the summer months proper, our outdoor
spaces are taking over indoors in terms of getting most
usage.
Gone are the days of uncomfortable, small patio tables
with wonky legs and cooking over tiny charcoal barbecues;
the increased choice of accessories means our outdoor
spaces can now function like any room inside the home.
And when it comes to dining al fresco, now is the time to
relax in style while the chef of the household conjures up
an outdoor feast with a culinary set-up to rival anything in
your domestic kitchen.
From impressive American-style barbecue grills to wood
fired ovens which make light work of everything from
pizzas and steaks to seafood and desserts, there are some
serious options for outdoor cooking, while generously
proportioned dining sets means there’s room for the whole
family to gather round and enjoy.
Just add a self-contained outdoor bar and you’ve got that
‘restaurant at home’ vibe all wrapped up.
LICHFIELD AUCTIONEER RICHARD WINTERTON TAKES A LOOK AT ADAPTING
A FAMILY BUSINESS FOR LIFE DURING CORONAVIRUS AND BEYOND
The auction world never stands still – and just as all
our ways of life have changed drastically during these
difficult few months, so have we adapted and evolved
to continue doing what we do best.
Safety of staff and clients remains our number one
concern and we have revolutionised the business to
allow us to jump back into action in a completely safe
environment.
Due to COVID-19, we cannot accommodate
members of the public at The Lichfield Auction
Centre yet our online auctions function safely,
securely and efficiently and are popular with bidders
all over the world.
We held two safe, online-only sales recently and they
turned out to be the most successful sales we have
ever held!
Our Fine Arts and Specialist Sale took place behind
closed doors and achieved a 91.5 percent selling rate
with 2,726 registered online bidders.
Highlights included the Peter McAleese SAS medals
collection selling for £25,000 and a stunning
sapphire necklet which fetched £32,000.
The Michael Gilbery Collection of paintings and
sketches exceeded £35,000 with a self portrait of the
artist making £10,700.
There were terrific results in all categories, from
jewellery, watches and silver to stamps, comics,
cameras and whisky.
RICHARD WINTERTON WORKING
HARD BEHIND THE SCENES
Record-breaking
Hot on the heels of the Fine Art came our Three
Day Sale from May 19 to 21, again held entirely
behind closed doors and with strict social
distancing measures in place.
With 1,349 lots entered and 1,301 sold, a
96.4 percent selling rate was achieved with an
average price of £116 per lot.
All the hard work and meticulous planning paid
off as we smashed our Three Day Sale record,
breaking the £150,000 bracket and attracting
2,742 bidders from around the world.
A fab collection of military watches fetched
£2,000; vintage Longines and Omega watches
were also popular, fetching hundreds of pounds
each.
Jewellery antique and modern, pictures,
ceramics, glass, militaria, sports memorabilia…
again all categories absolutely flew.
A superb Fabian Perez charcoal made £1,600,
A COLLECTION OF AVENGERS COMICS
MADE AN IMPRESSIVE £5,000
of pounds, an auction of
Roman artefacts and the
important house contents of
a large country estate.
We deal with numerous
clearances every single week,
big and small. If we can put
a lot number on it, we will
sell it – we don’t pick and
choose, we do it whole.
the stamps section totalled £4,000 and a superb
collection of cigarette cards and trade cards fetched
£3,500.
A specialist technology section featuring music studio
and multimedia equipment plus turntables and
amplifiers made £7,200.
And to cap it all, we saw the strongest demand for
brown furniture we’ve seen for a number of years –
an Arts and Crafts golden oak wind-out dining table
made £1,400, as did a Victorian amboyna,
walnut and foliate inlaid mirror back credenza.
Bidders also proved wide awake when it came
to a mahogany bed frame, which made £1,800.
It all goes to show that while we may be
operating completely differently from the start
of the year our results keep getting better and
better!
Contactless post-sale collections in
accordance with coronavirus regulations are
by appointment only, 10am-4pm Monday
to Friday (excluding bank holidays). Please
Dining delights delivered
MISSING YOUR FOODIE FIX? NO PROBLEM - HERE WE ROUND UP SOME OF THE
TASTIEST OPTIONS LOCALLY WHICH CAN BE DELIVERED DIRECTLY TO YOUR DOOR
OR COLLECTED TO BE ENJOYED IN YOUR OWN HOMES
With restaurants and pubs still under lock and key during the coronavirus pandemic, eating out is just one
element of normal life which is sorely missed by many. But never fear; canny restaurant owners and foodie
outlets have been thinking out of the box to transform their dining experiences into offerings which can be
enjoyed at home. Here we take a look at some of the best local options for a lockdown foodie pick-me-up.
AFFORDABLE EATS:
The English Indian: Street food maestros The English Indian - famous for their spicy take on that family
favourite fish and chips - have gone back to their roots, delivering fresh, authentic curries every week around
Lichfield, Sutton Coldfield, Rugeley and the surrounding areas. Choose from a tasty menu including chicken
tikka masala, chicken bhuna, vegan curries and rice and dhal side dishes, priced from just £3 a portion. We
can confirm it makes for a mouth-watering feast! www.englishindiantakeout.co.uk
The Patty Freaks: If you’re craving a proper burger, then the guys at The Patty Freaks are sure to deliver
the goods. A firm favourite at Lichfield Grub Club and Digbeth Dining Club, they’re offering a weekly
menu of three seriously good burgers, each priced £7, as well as cajun spiced or loaded fries. Deliveries are
available for Sutton Coldfield, Lichfield and Burntwood; keep a close eye on their Instagram @thepattyfreaks
for details of pre-order opening times. www.thepattyfreaks.co.uk
FINE DINING FIX:
Tom Shepherd x Sauce Supper Club: Ahead of his Lichfield restaurant opening - hopefully! - later this
year, acclaimed chef Tom Shepherd, formerly of Michelin-starred Adams in Birmingham, has teamed up with
Sauce Supper Club to bring ‘at home’ fine dining to the Midlands and, now, beyond. With a weekly changing
menu - and now vegetarian option too - offering three delectable prepared courses, plus freshly baked bread
and a sweet treat, priced at £75 for a box for two, this is a great value and - we have it on very good authority -
totally delicious slice of lockdown luxury. www.saucesupperclub.co.uk
Stu Deeley at Home: MasterChef: The Professional winner Stu Deeley has just launched his own fine dining
set menu, ready for you to finish off and enjoy at home. Each week Stu will create a three course a la carte
menu with beautiful, top quality seasonal produce, and each week the price will reflect the menu he has created,
so as to make it as affordable as possible. The first week’s menu was priced at a shade under £40 per person
and sold out in hours - so get in there quick! www.simpsonsrestaurant.co.uk/stu-deeley-at-home/
TASTY TREATS:
Cristina’s Cucina: For a fabulous sweet treat, Dudley-based Cristina’s Cucina specialises in authentic
Sicilian cannoli, as recommended by MasterChef ’s Stu Deeley, no less. We couldn’t resist giving these crisp
pastry shells packed with an indulgent sweet ricotta filling and topped with a variety of tasty toppings a
try - and most certainly recommend! Incredibly moreish, they’re a heavenly slice of Sicily to enjoy at home.
Cristina’s goodies are available for collection or delivery in the West Midlands - find her on Instagram
@cristinas_cucina for more details. www.cristinas-cucina.co.uk
Onthebreadline: Pastries and breads and cakes, oh my! Sutton Coldfield baker Sebastian Clough has been
baking up a storm throughout lockdown, offering an array of delectable comestibles from his little bakery
in Mere Green - just check out his Instagram @onthebreadline for inspiration. From sourdough loaves in a
variety of mouth-watering flavours to decadent cakes which are oh-so-tempting, there’s plenty here to tickle
the taste buds. It’s certainly worth popping by if you’re local to Sutton Coldfield - but get there fast, as each
day is generally a sell-out. www.instagram.com/onthebreadline/
Decadent dessert
ACCLAIMED CHEF TOM SHEPHERD SHARES AN IMPRESSIVE DESSERT FOR YOU TO TRY
AT HOME - PERFECT FOR A SPECIAL OCCASION OR WHEN YOU REALLY WANT TO WOW!
PHOTOGRAPHY BY BECKY TRANTER. WWW.BECKYTRANTER.COM
Acclaimed chef Tom Shepherd, formerly head chef of Michelin-starred Adams Restaurant in Birmingham, is set to
make his mark on the Lichfield dining scene with the opening of his first restaurant in the city later this year.
And if you can’t wait to sample a little taste of Tom’s culinary magic, why not have a go at this decadent dessert recipe?
This choux bun pud was a recent hit in Tom’s ‘fine dining at home’ collaboration with Sauce Supper Club, so if you
missed out - or if you enjoyed it so much you can’t wait to eat it again - now’s your chance to recreate this wow-factor
dish at home.
Chocolate choux bun | warm chocolate
orange sauce | crème diplomat
Chocolate choux:
100g white chocolate
25g butter
65g praline paste (or hazelnut spread)
90g crushed biscuits
Warm chocolate sauce:
250g double cream
75g butter
80ml fresh orange juice
15g cocoa powder
25g sugar
3g salt
150g dark chocolate
Crème diplomat:
125g cream
125g milk
75g egg yolk
65g sugar
30g flour
20g cornflour
1 vanilla pod
1 leaf of bronze gelatine
Chocolate craquelin:
150g butter
150g flour
150g Demerara sugar
30g cocoa powder
22

Chefs tip – when making the choux pastry,
it’s good to make it the night before you cook,
allowing time to rest your dough which in turn
will bake better and more evenly.
METHOD
Choux pastry – boil the milk, butter, water, sugar
and salt together, once boiling and butter completely
melted, add your flour and with a whisk incorporate it
all together until a paste-like consistency. Cook out the
flour on a medium to low heat until the dough comes
away from the sides and doesn’t stick. Transfer mix to
a mixer and mix on low speed until the heat is beaten
out of the dough. One by one add your eggs, after
adding the last egg it should resemble a thick paste-like
consistency. Transfer to a piping bag and pop it in the
fridge overnight.
Chocolate craquelin – in a mixing bowl add your
butter and sugar and beat until light, pale and fluffy.
Once light and fluffy, sift your flour and cocoa powder
into your mix and gently fold in, try and fold as few
times possible, this way your craquelin will crack when
baking.
Transfer mix in between two sheets of greaseproof
paper and roll out on a flat surface until the thickness
of a pound coin, transfer to the freezer and cut discs
out the same diameter as your piped choux paste just
before baking.
Chocolate and orange sauce – simply boil all the
ingredients together apart from the chocolate, once
boiled pour liquid over your chocolate pieces and allow
to stand for five minutes, with a whisk or hand blender,
emulsify the cream mix and chocolate until a nice
smooth, thick sauce.
Crème diplomat – boil your milk and cream with
a split vanilla pod, meanwhile bloom your gelatine in
some ice cold water, and set aside. Before your cream
mix is boiling, add the remaining ingredients (egg yolk,
sugar, flour and corn flour) to a large mixing bowl and
whisk until pale. When cream mix has boiled, add
your gelatine and pour onto your pale yolk mix and
whisk until fully incorporated, this should resemble a
custard colour and consistency, return to the heat and
gently cook out the flour and cornflour until thick and
glossy. Transfer to a cool tray, cover in cling film and
press down the mix, like a cartouche, and place into the
fridge overnight.
Cooking the choux – set your oven to 180 degrees
C. On a sheet of greaseproof paper, pipe your choux
paste like little beehives no more than 3cm in diameter,
once all piped out, with a ring cutter, cut your
craquelin to the same diameter and place on top of the
paste then cook for 30 minutes.
Once cooked, remove from the tray and place on an
airing rack until cool.
To serve, half the choux buns, fill with crème diplomat
and some fresh berries, pop the tops back on and pour
your warm sauce all over the top.
Delicious!
Back gin the game
THE GINTLEMAN, THE MIDLANDS’ PREMIER RACONTEUR AT HOUSE PARTIES AND
VENUES ACROSS BIRMINGHAM, SHARES HIS NEW AT-HOME TASTING EXPERIENCE
AFTER my brief hiatus last month while finalising
my contribution to the new e-commerce revolution, I
hope this finds you well, both physically and mentally,
prior to being granted parole in July, where we can
tentatively discover the new landscape of a socially
distanced hospitality industry with its reduced capacity.
While we’ve been awaiting this, lots of your favourite
drinking and eating establishments have evolved their
business models to financially survive, helping to break
free and discover the customer fourth wall to thrive
by branching out offering - among others - one-stop
farm-style community hubs, craft cocktails direct to
your door, wine and cheese taste alongs via Zoom (if
only we’d bought shares last year) or utilising Facebook
live to offer a wealth of learning the Open University
would be proud of. This new revenue stream and way
to provide an extension of a brand for many may well
be here to stay.
For myself, moving into pre-packaged experiential
tastings that then had the ability to be sold into retail
outlets or couriered to a destination and done virtually
had been something I’d been working on since last
November, little realising how impactful it would
become.
As such, I wanted to share with you my next evolution
expanding on the variety of themed tastings I’ve
previously hosted in people’s homes to release, mini
drum roll please…
The Ginspired Tastings picnic edition hamper box!
The ideal compact and stylish summer companion
serving one to two guests with a thirst for knowledge.
Enjoy the six differing and interchangeable 35ml
gin tasting combinations paying homage to the
quintessential English summer, from a British Polo Gin
with added strawberry and rose, complemented with a
Cansecco Rose, to an Wildflower gin from Cotswolds
Distillery that aims to repopulate the butterfly and bee
populations.
Perfect whether you’re relaxing on the grass in the
sunshine, or longer term with friends on a weekend
retreat, to complement a sporting occasion, the
ultimate sociable train journey statement or to enhance
an afternoon tea for added savoir faire.
All you’ll need is a paper cup or wine glass, ice or prechill
the box in the fridge prior and buy the matching
garnish recommendations should you wish. You’ll even
convert your non gin-drinking friends.
This will also complement World Gin Day on Saturday,
June 13; as my regular gin cruises have been curtailed
I’m offering a Zoom taste-along, as well as anyone who
may want to do a virtual hen party.
Each box, as well as the above, contains refreshing and
tasty fun fact sheets that would give Cliff a run for his
money in Cheers, plus recipe and cocktail ideas and a
Gin v Tonic game to win your friends’ drink.
The box hamper is available for £40 plus P&P,
or collection from Colmore Row in Birmingham.
For more details go to my online shop - with more
bespoke extensions releasing in the future - www.
budget you need to spend or for bespoke corporate
themed boxes.
RB COLLECTION CO-DIRECTOR OLIVER TAKES A LOOK AT SOME LUXURIOUS
AND PRIVATE BREAKS FOR THE PERFECT POST-LOCKDOWN GETAWAY
PRIVACY AND LUXURY AT CAP
ROCAT IN MAJORCA
s we sit at home and wait, many of us are thinking
about what comes next. Our 2020 plans have been
abruptly put on hold and, as the Covid-19 curve
begins to subside, we start to plan our next move.
Many of us have rewritten our bucket lists and
thought about all of the things that really matter.
Spending time with loved ones, seeing the world,
working less and focusing on happiness and heartfelt
experiences.
You’re not the only one dreaming of that first sip
from a fresh coconut on a white, sandy beach. But
when? When can we get back to exploring all of
Mother Nature’s beauty spots? During our collective
forced pause, Mother Nature has been thriving.
Jungles have grown bigger, our waters are clearer and
our air is cleaner, and we have a newfound respect
for our wonderful planet.
There has been a lot of talk from travel and trend
experts about what the future of travel looks like.
There is no clear answer, but one thing that is for
sure is a need to take care of ourselves and each
other. The current situation we find ourselves in has
been a time for reflection and we long for those days
of walking hand-in-hand on a beach, or the clink of
wine glasses as we watch the sun set. For many of
us, that first post lockdown trip will be to an idyllic
private retreat.
For travel specialists like ourselves, although it has
been a challenging time it is also a time for hope and
a time to think about what our clients really want.
We all still want to travel but we want to feel safe.
With this in mind, we have listed our favourite hot
spots that give you luxury and privacy. A safe haven,
a secret hideout. That perfect, unique break.
From white sandy beaches to unique once-in-alifetime-moments,
we present a selection of our top
suggestions that may very well suit the post-lockdown
travel escape.
Tropical private escapes
Private villa accommodation does not have to mean
you miss out on the facilities and service offered by a
hotel resort. Many of the world’s leading resorts offer
residences or villa accommodations as an upgrade, as
well as standard hotel rooms. A good example of this
would be the Sala brand in Thailand. Our favourite
is Sala Samui, but their private villas on Phuket have
huge pools which are walled in for ultimate privacy.
28

The Anantara in Salalah, Oman, is also a great
beach front property with history and culture nearby,
top resort restaurants but plenty of large private pool
villas suitable for couples and families. You can enjoy
the service you expect with villa accommodations,
without having to cater for yourself.
Thailand definitely offers the best value-for-money
for private pool villas; some of the largest are at
Soneva Kiri on Koh Kut. The resort is actually close
to Cambodia too and you can day-trip to Angkor
Wat!
These private villas - which are usually very spacious
and come with their own butler - will no doubt be
in huge demand as travellers seek out privacy, space
and want to relax knowing they are not in too close
proximity to other guests.
Other favourite tropical island destinations of ours
include Petit St Vincent (PSV) in the Grenadines.
This home-away-from-home style island resort
is a contrast to some of the other glitzy resorts in
the Caribbean. It’s charm and authenticity really
appealed to us, as did it’s ‘No TV, no WiFi’ policy in
the villas!
Does the idea of white sand between your feet sound
good? Jumby Bay Resort lies just off the coast of
Antigua and is one of our favourite private island
getaways in the Caribbean. For ultimate privacy,
we recommend the stunning sea-view one-bedroom
hideaway with infinity pool and outdoor garden
shower and soaking tub! This is definitely a more
glamorous option than PSV, and is certainly up there
as one of the best resorts in the world!
For the ultimate luxury escape, Finolhu in the
Maldives is a great choice. These unique beachbased
bubble tents have sprung up to offer a unique
way of experiencing island life. Sleep under the stars
for an unforgettable, romantic night, totally at once
with nature with all the comforts close at hand. The
THE STARS IN A BUBBLE TENT
AT FINOLHU IN THE MALDIVES
island was founded by Adidas
who uses ocean plastic waste
in the manufacturing of their
trainers.
Closer to home, there are
some wonderful, unique hotels
within easy reach. Not only
is Cap Rocat one of the most
luxurious and stylish properties
on the island of Majorca, but
their Sentinel Suites are really
something else. Uniquely carved
into the rock face, they offer
privacy and amazing views over
the Mediterranean Sea. You
have your own small private pool
and hammocks and benefit from
mind blowing sunsets!
Unique experiences
One of the most unique collections of
accommodations in the world, the Tree Hotel in
Sweden offers individually designed tree house style
accommodation with stunning scenery, a host of
activities and the chance to see the Northern Lights.
You can visit all year round too so if you prefer a
summer scenic escape, it is the perfect option. You
can also combine with the new Arctic Bath and the
Ice Hotel in Sweden.
If you like the idea of a safari, Chiefs Camp is a
luxury hideaway offering just ten bush lodges located
CHANNEL YOUR INNER INDY
WITH A TRIP TO JORDAN
29

CHIEFS CAMP IS A LUXURY
HIDEAWAY IN BOTSWANA
on Chiefs Island in the heart of the Okavango Delta
in Botswana. It was from here that my fellow MD,
Nathan, had one of his most breath-taking wildlife
experiences! The hotel is spacious, and each of the
stylish bush pavilions features a private dining area,
a tranquil outside seating area and a terrace pool –
all perfect for absorbing the surrounding plains and
majestic African skies. The bathrooms have floor-toceiling
windows and folding glass doors leading to
outdoor showers and generous tubs are perfect for
long, indulgent soaks. Relax on your covered deck
and look out for elephants, giraffes, buffalo and other
wildlife as you enjoy the camp’s excellent cuisine and
wines.
A great way to experience the night sky of the
Jordanian desert, the Bubble Hotel features around
20 individual spacious bubble suites dotted around
the desert landscape. Combined with a visit to the
Lost City of Petra, these would be a perfect escape
for a night or two as part of your tour around
Jordan. I had the pleasure to visit Jordan a few years
ago and it was one of those childhood dreams come
true. I grew up watching Indiana Jones and while
it wasn’t quite the same in parts, it was still very
special indeed and a good introduction to this part
of the world. Since Jordan,
I have been back to the
Middle East, most recently
to Oman which had a similar
charm, great scenery and
culture which I would admit
some of the other Arabian
destinations can lack in parts.
If like me, you have a sense
of ‘Indy’ inside you and love
an adventure, I suggest not
lumping them all in the same
basket though, their societies
do differ greatly and it is
worth exploring a few to fully
appreciate their dynamic.
What could be more
private than exploring in
the comfort of your own
car? Let your daily plan
have a little flexibility so
you can come and go as
you please. Some of the
world’s most scenic spots
are easily explored by car,
here are a few of our own
personal favourites:
South Africa’s Garden
Route and Winelands
is definitely at the top of our list as a ‘must-do’
experience. Not only can you begin with one of the
world’s best cities in Cape Town, but you can take in
possibly the best scenery on Earth, at your own pace.
We did this drive over a number of days and came
into contact with very few people along the way. It
was very relaxing and yet there was so much to see
and do, but it felt private, special and wonderfully
memorable. The driving route is easily split into
small sections with only a couple of hours driving
every few days. A few nights safari at the end of your
trip will round it off very nicely indeed and is a great
way to celebrate a special occasion.
Close to home, an often overlooked driving route
is from Barcelona, over the Pyrenees to the Basque
country and then back again in a loop. There’s
generally very little traffic once outside of the city
and lovely quant stops along the way. Our tip would
be to head to Andorra from Barceolona first and
enjoy lunch at Borda Vella, a local restaurant and
one of the best culinary experiences of the road trip!
Andorra is a popular ski destination and so it was
great to see a different side to the well known resorts
in the summer months.
From here we ventured into France to Pau and then
PETITE ST VINCENT IS
Biarritz. This is foodie heaven, as is St Sebastian and
Bilbao with its famous Guggenheim Museum. The
drive back took us through Spain with a stop at the
jaw-dropping Bardenas Reales (another opportunity
to stargaze in their Bubble Tents).
Sardinia is another favourite destination to selfdrive.
A few nights in the north is ideal followed by
a scenic drive diagnology across the island towards
the south. Witness the changing landscapes and taste
the contrasting changes of cuisine. The north and
south of Sardinia are very different indeed and it is
worth spending at least a week but preferably more
to enjoy it. It’s very popular in the height of the
summer so we suggest visiting slightly off-season. If
time is not on your side, a few nights at the stunning
Petra Segreta Resort and Spa is a must. Their private
suites with pools are the ultimate indulgence. At the
very least you could just swing by the dinner, but
a little warning; don’t trust your sat nav - use the
hotel’s specific instructions and give yourself plenty
of time! It will most definitely be worth it, the views
are out of this world!
Portugal is another county that lends itself well to
a driving holiday. We flew into Lisbon for a few
nights of culture, food and wine, then picked up our
car to head to the lesser known, but beautiful
Alentejo. Here we enjoyed more culture, food
and wine and it was nice to escape the city and
step back in time a little. A far distance from
any tourist crowd, this region is well known for
its, well, culture, food and wine. Our tip would
be to stay in one of the many historic converted
Pousadas for a really authentic Potuguese
experience. If time permits you could continue
to drive south to the Algarve and relax in your
own private pool villa before flying home.
If you need an idea to treat that special
someone and don’t want to venture too far,
how about an Aston Martin 007 experience
in Scotland? This package captures the style
and glamour of the timeless Bond films and lets you
enjoy the thrills of driving a stylish Aston Martin
through stunning Scottish scenery and around key
locations associated with the films. You’ll pass by
Faslane naval base, featured in The Spy Who Loved
Me and the loch by Crinan, scene of a boat chase
through the Bosphorus in From Russia with Love.
What screams Bond more than staying on a private
island? Here you’ll learn how to make the ultimate
martini! This very special short break includes an
exclusive speedboat trip past Duart Castle, family
seat of the real-life inspiration of 007. And who
could resist powering through Glencoe, setting for
the dramatic finale of Skyfall?
While travel is not in our immediate schedules, the
lack of movement has led to many “wish we were
not we are here to help guide you back to exploring
the world again with ease. Our expert knowledge
Give yourself a boost
THIS MONTH, LICHFIELD’S FAVOURITE PERSONAL TRAINER RAUL ROMERO ADDRESSES THE
HIGHER RISK MALES HAVE IN CATCHING COVID-19, AND HOW TO BOOST YOUR IMMUNE
SYSTEM IN ORDER FOR YOU TO BE IN THE FITTEST STATE POSSIBLE TO COMBAT VIRUSES
New York is one of the worst affected cities in the
world for Covid-19. New York City Health have
published stark data that shows the number of deaths
of males infected by coronavirus is considerably
higher than that of females - 62.2% male deaths vs.
37.8% female (data taken up to April 14, 2020).
Our own UK data also reflects the same story.
According to ONS figures, males with Covid-19
accounted for 781.9 deaths per 100,000, compared
to 439 female deaths per 100,000 from the same
period (from March 1, 2020 - April 30, 2020 and
registered before May 5, 2020).
So why are males more vulnerable?
Ultimately, it is still too early to have a definitive
answer. However, we can certainly look at the facts
so far. In general, men are more likely to practise
unhealthy habits compared to women. For example
the ONS published that in 2018, in the U.K, 16.5%
of men smoked compared with 13.0% of women.
Other theories confirmed by scientists reveal that
in general, women tend to have greater and more
robust immune responses. This can be a doubleedged
sword; autoimmune diseases are more
common in women. But it may mean that women
are more protected against novel invading germs.
How can we boost our immune systems?
Although there has not yet been any specific evidence
published showing that boosting our immune systems
will protect us against Covid-19 specifically, in
general, boosting our immune system does usually
protect us better against infections and viruses.
And while it is easier said than done, it certainly
isn’t impossible. By undertaking dietary and lifestyle
changes, we can strengthen our body’s natural
defences and better help us combat infections and
viruses.
Here are my top nine tips to help strengthen
our immune systems naturally:
1. Get enough sleep. Yes, this really is as simple
as it sounds! It is so easy to lounge around in front of
STAYING HYDRATED IS A MUST
the T.V, and before we know it the hours have slipped
by and we end up going to sleep much later than
we should. Studies have shown that a poor quality
sleep is linked to a higher susceptibility to sickness.
If possible, adults should try and get at least seven
hours sleep a night.
2. Eat more whole plant foods. Whole plant
foods such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and
legumes are packed full of nutrients and antioxidants
that can also contribute to strengthening our
immune systems. Some of my go-to daily snacks are
pecan nuts, and a variety of different seeds such as
pumpkin seeds. When hunger strikes, I like to reach
for these instead of bingeing on unhealthy sugary
snacks. Not only do they taste great, but they also
32 22

make me feel a lot more energetic for longer!
3. Eat more healthy fats. Being of Spanish
origin, this is something I have done my whole life
so is definitely a lifestyle for me. Simply, this includes
things like loving drizzling olive oil over all my meals,
and enjoying baked salmon for dinner about three
times a week! Olive oil is highly anti-inflammatory
and is linked to a decreased risk of chronic diseases
like heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Its antiinflammatory
properties may also help our bodies
combat harmful disease-causing bacteria and viruses.
4. Eat more fermented foods. These are foods
like yoghurt, sauerkraut and kefir. Although these are
not as commonly known, they really help improve
gut health which in turn can boost the immune
system. Seeing as though these foods may not be as
popular, an alternative can be to take a probiotic
supplement in their place.
5. Limit ‘added sugar’ intake. This one is no
surprise. Most people are aware that added sugar
and refined carbs contribute to obesity which in turn
can cause different health issues such as diabetes
which can then suppress our immune systems.
Despite knowing this, most of us are so dependent
on sugary treats and pick me ups that this tip can be
quite hard to achieve. One way to do it could be to
cut one thing out at a time and build on the progress
you make!
6. Keep ACTIVE! This one is also no surprise.
Keeping fit and active not only boosts the immune
system, but can also reduce inflammation and
boost the effectiveness of vaccines in people with
compromised immune systems. This is one that all of
us can do, regardless of fitness ability or injuries. It
can be something simple like going for a daily brisk
walk, a jog or a swim.
STOCK UP ON
GOOD FATS - LIKE
SALMON
7. Drink plenty of WATER!
Again this is one that we
all know, yet often forget to
do during the day. Keeping
hydrated is important for our
overall health as naturally,
getting dehydrated can
cause health issues. I try to
consciously ‘measure’ the
amount of water I drink by
simply filling three big bottles
at the start of the day and
ensuring I drink one during
the morning, one in the
afternoon, and another one late
afternoon/evening.
8. Keeping check of stress
levels. Ensuring stress levels are kept to a minimum
is directly linked to immune health. Although there
are stresses in daily life, we can find strategies to
control and try and eliminate stress and anxiety
through different channels such as yoga, meditation,
journaling and even seeking medical advice.
9. Supplement if needed. Not everyone will
need supplements, but for those of us who do, they
can help keep us healthy and strengthen our body’s
immune response. Supplements may include Vitamin
D (especially living in the UK!), and Vitamin C,
among others.
Costa del Garden style
WHILE YOUR SUITCASES REMAIN FIRMLY IN THE LOFT FOR 2020, THERE’S NO
REASON WHY YOU SHOULDN’T EMBRACE YOUR HOLIDAY WARDROBE FOR
STYLISH SUMMER DRESSING AT HOME, SAYS AMY NORBURY
WITH far-flung getaways likely to stay a distant
memory for the remainder of 2020 at least, your
summer wardrobe has probably been eschewed in
favour of lockdown-friendly loungewear, comfy gym
leggings and pjs. But with the prospects of small
garden parties and intimate soirees on the horizon,
maybe it’s time to give yourself a little refresh in the
summer style stakes.
After all, if you can’t jet off to a tropical paradise,
there’s no reason why you can’t make the most of your
outdoor space to create a tropical paradise right here
at home.
If you’re - understandably - reluctant to relinquish
loose clothing entirely, then a floaty dress is the
perfect choice for easy summer style. Lightweight and
unstructured, they’re perfect for hiding the lockdown
pounds most of us have been piling on thanks to the
nation’s new favourite hobby of baking, while at the
same time being effortlessly chic.
Ditsy floral prints and tiny polka dots remain firm
favourites when it comes to the prettiest prints, while
pops of coral, yellow and green add a bright, natureinspired
summery touch.
Sticking with the effortless theme, jumpsuits are
another summer must-have, removing the hassle of
matching separates while maintaining that smartcasual
style. After all, we’re definitely in favour of that
‘throw it on and go’ vibe - especially when we’re only
venturing as far as the garden.
As the temperatures continue to rise - and the prospect
of a summer heatwave looming - it’s sadly time to
ditch your comfy house slippers in favour of more
cooling sandals - although let’s not go crazy with
heels or wedges; it’s much easier to stick to flats for
pounding the patio!
Accessorise with an oversized hat - pretty AND
practical when it comes to sun protection - plus your
favourite sunnies and you’ll be winning in the style
stakes all summer long.
In the know: Face zoning
YOU MAY HAVE READ ABOUT FACE-ZONING; IT’S THE LATEST SKINCARE ROUTINE THAT TACKLES
DIFFERENT AREAS OF YOUR FACE WITH DIFFERENT PRODUCTS TO ACHIEVE THE PERFECT COMPLEXION.
HEAVEN FOUNDER AND CELEBRITY FACIALIST DEBORAH MITCHELL EXPLAINS HOW IT WORKS AND HOW
TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT PRODUCTS TO TACKLE SPECIFIC ISSUES
THE T ZONE: Literally the shape of the letter T, this is your forehead, nose and chin and is
prone to being oilier than other parts of your face. Opt for organic and natural ingredients that
will not only minimise oil levels and rebalance skin but also even tone and clear clogged pores.
SKINCARE NEEDS: You may think using oil-based products on oily skin is counterproductive
but it actually tricks the complexion into thinking it’s done its job and therefore
stops producing any more. Heaven’s Cleanse & Foam Wash is a non-abrasive exfoliator,
toner and cleanser in one that helps to improve elasticity levels while balancing oil levels to
reduce that tell-tale shine on your T-Zone. Thanks to the presence of organic carrot oil – which
contains healing vitamin A – it also rejuvenates and repairs.
THE U ZONE: Because the area around your cheeks and jawline
doesn’t produce as much sebum as your T Zone it tends to be dry
to the touch; having said this, it is still prone to breakouts. Spots
here are common, as is irritation, redness and signs of ageing. Use
products that tackle a whole range of issues in one – ones that hydrate, improve
discolouration and tackle those pesky fine lines.
SKINCARE NEEDS: My multi-functional Willowbee Mask & Cleanse
detoxes skin and heals imperfection. It’s MY first product that uses bark from the
willow tree, a natural and organic alternative to aspirin. Because of these antiinflammatory
and healing properties it is ideal for those who suffer from acne and
breakouts, rosacea and eczema.
THE S ZONE: Covering the temples, eyebrows and cheeks, this part of your face
can quickly lose its hydration, radiance and elasticity, showing those tell-tale ageing
signs.
SKINCARE NEEDS: Use a vitamin C-rich daily moisturiser that promotes
the production of collagen to tackle fine lines and boost elasticity; while natural
oils hydrate and keep moisture locked in. My luxurious Divine Cream works
particularly well on more mature complexions thanks to its innovative anti-ageing
properties. It contains organic mandarin and orange, both natural sources of
vitamin C, which help increase collagen and elastin levels for a more youthful
appearance.
THE EYE ZONE: This is the most delicate area and the skin around your eyes is ten times
thinner than on other parts of your face; because of this it can easily become dehydrated
leading to crow’s feet and wrinkles as well as sagging, redness and puffiness.
SKINCARE NEEDS: Your daily moisturiser won’t cut it so you will need a cream
that is formulated to tend to the delicate skin around your eyes. My Heavenly Eyes
Regenerating Complex is hard-working yet gentle enough for those mornings where
darker circles are more visible; it hydrates while penetrating fine lines, and its vitamin A and
Stay sun safe
WITH THE WEATHER CONTINUING TO HEAT UP AS WE GET INTO SUMMER PROPER,
THE EXPERTS AT SPIRE LITTLE ASTON HOSPITAL OFFER SOME ADVICE TO HELP
YOU TAKE THE GUESSWORK OUT OF SUNSCREEN SHOPPING
The shelves will be full of sun creams and lotions
this summer - but which one should you buy? Does
cut-price mean it won’t be effective? Are you simply
paying for the brand name when you fork out for the
expensive stuff?
Four consultant dermatologists at Spire Little Aston
Hospital are offering advice on which sunscreens
provide the best protection – and you don’t have to
break the bank to get the best!
THEY ADVISE:
When choosing a sunscreen, make sure you
check the UVA star rating as well as the SPF (sun
protection factor). Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from
the sun is transmitted in three forms: UVA, UVB
and UVC.
UVC radiation cannot penetrate the earth’s
atmosphere and so does not reach our skin.
Therefore, we only need to protect our skin from
UVA and UVB.
In general, UVA is the one associated with skin
ageing - which gives you wrinkles, leathery skin
and brown spots, and UVB is the one that causes
sunburn and skin cancer but there is some crossover
between the two.
When you buy sunscreen, it will be labelled with a
SPF and a UVA star rating. The SPF is on a scale
of 6 to 50+ with SPF 6 to 14 providing the least
amount of protection against burning and skin
cancer, and 50+ having the strongest protection
from UVB.
The UVA star rating ranges from 0 to 5. The British
Association of Dermatologists (www.bad.org.uk)
recommends using a sunscreen with at least SPF 30
and a UVA star rating of 4 to 5 as a good level of
protection.
If you are going to swim in the sun, it is also
important that the sunscreen you use is labelled
as water-resistant so it does not wash off easily.
However, you will still need to reapply it after
bathing to ensure you have adequate protection
throughout the day.
You may have your own favourite or you may just
opt for the cheapest one in your supermarket, but
the main thing to check is the protection value and
not the price.
And remember, if you don’t keep ‘slapping it on’ it
just won’t give you the protection you need!
To book a 30-minute virtual Zoom
consultation with a dermatologist, call Spire
Little Aston Hospital on 0121 580 7119.
Big Boys Don’t Cry?
WITH MEN’S HEALTH AWARENESS WEEK TAKING PLACE THIS MONTH FROM JUNE 15 TO 21,
ALAN DOVEY, CONSULTANT PSYCHOTHERAPIST AT WORKING MINDS, TAKES A LOOK AT THE
CHANGING LANDSCAPE OF MENS’ MENTAL HEALTH
Working in the field of mental health
for more than 30 years has taken me
through many highs and lows, none
more so than the changing landscape
of mens’ mental health. It’s put me
in what I feel is a unique position to
comment on this subject from both a
professional and personal perspective
and give, what I hope is some wellneeded
advice to people who still
think “big boys don’t cry”.
Fortunately, there is no doubt a
positive impetus in today’s society
encouraging men to be more open
and seek support for mental health
problems, especially when compared to previous
generations. We are changing the way people think
about men and mental health and this cultural shift
was always going to take time - but there are still
large pockets of stigma that lead to men bottling up
and not discussing their thoughts and feelings in a
healthy, open manner.
Society still holds a view (thankfully, this is
weakening) that men should be “hard” and “rigid”,
not showing emotions as this is a sign of weakness.
This is (or was) reinforced from an early childhood
IF YOU FEEL LOW, TALK TO
SOMEONE YOU TRUST
‘BIG BOYS DON’T CRY’ IS AN
OUTDATED CONCEPT, SAYS
ALAN DOVEY
being given beliefs such as the title of this article.
Also being told to “man up” after distressing life
events reinforces the need to suppress emotions,
which is a behaviour directly linked to depression.
On an evolutionary level, the male probably
naturally suppresses (suppress emotions while
hunting for food for example) but this would be short
term and not long term. Short term suppression
allows for problem solving to occur but long term
suppression leads the male to sink deeper into his
negative thoughts, thus leading them to isolate
themselves from others, avoid social contact and
sometimes turn to chemicals that
help them suppress even further
(alcohol).
This spiral from distress into major
depression can take months and
even years and I often see clients
who, when asked how long they
feel they haven’t been well, state
two, three, five years or even longer.
Sadly, throughout this time, due to
their increasing withdrawal from the
world, they have lost many things in
their lives - health, partners, friends
and jobs as well as a sense of self.
This further increases the speed and
severity of this negative spiral.
So, my advice to all you guys out there...
1. You can have a bad day or a bad week but if
feelings of low mood, low energy and poor sleep
continue for more than a month, talk to someone
close to you that you trust. If you feel you have no
one then go to see your GP to let your doctor assess
how you are. It is almost impossible to accurately
assess ourselves because of the way emotions work
and I found this out the hard way after my mother
passed away in 2016. Even being “in the job” I
couldn’t see my mood lowering until I was knocking
on the door of depression.
2. Focus on your physical health as this IS MENTAL
HEALTH and this includes exercise and activity,
healthy diet and maintaining good sleep.
3. Give yourself a mental health “check up”- I tend
to do this every month:
• How have I felt physically over the last four weeks?
• How is my work?
• Have I taken time with family and friends?
• What do I have to look forward to in my diary
(social meetings, holidays etc)?
• Do I have positive meanings in my life (hobbies
and interests etc)?
This allows me to intervene early should I find
myself struggling, and after 30 years in clinical
practice, the most effective intervention for mental
health is EARLY INTERVENTION.
This is a great time for men and mental health and
I hope we embrace these times and understand
resilience and vulnerability go hand in hand. Please
guys ditch the “macho” and embrace the essence
of resiliency which is to feel your emotions, explore
your thoughts and if you’re struggling SHARE these
with friends and loved ones and if you continue to
struggle seek professional support.
“Out of your vulnerabilities will come your
strength” Sigmund Freud
Conducted with compassion
A STAFFORDSHIRE FUNERAL FIRM WITH A FRESH APPROACH TO TRADITION
HAS EARNED A REPUTATION FOR PROVIDING UNRIVALLED CARE AND
SUPPORT DURING ONE OF LIFE’S MOST DIFFICULT TIMES
The team at O’Malley Family Funerals are not what
people may perceive as ‘typical’ funeral directors. The
independent firm is led by 26-year-old Jack O’Malley,
working alongside his brother Luke, 27, and 22-yearold
sister Grace. The siblings, from Burntwood,
have already built up quite the reputation since their
funeral home in Cannock opened its doors in 2017,
with national award nominations and even a number
of appearances on the BBC.
O’Malley Family Funerals want to challenge the status
quo, not only by being transparent and competitive
with their pricing, but also by giving each family
they care for the opportunity to say goodbye in their
own unique way; from the simplest send-off to the
most extravagant, the most traditional to something
alternative. They’ve helped families use everything
from lorries to minis as hearses, live-streamed services
across the globe to New Zealand and even organised
for ashes to be sent up in a firework.
Jack O’Malley says: “We are all family at O’Malley’s
and it is our promise to treat all those we care for and
support as if they are family too. Me and my siblings
Luke and Grace are also supported by uncles Andy
and John and cousin Ian who assist with funeral
services.”
At O’Malley Family Funerals they believe that families
should be guided by what they want rather than
what they feel they should do. A key element of their
business is the personal service they provide to all
those they look after. Unlike the large corporate firms
where families may never meet the same member of
staff twice, the team at O’Malleys all play a crucial
role in each service they conduct. They work closely
with every family, connecting with them on a human
level to build a close relationship to help deliver
the best possible service while also saving families
hundreds, sometimes thousands of pounds compared
to other companies.
O’Malley Family Funerals can be contacted day or
night, 365 days of the year and serve all areas with no
restrictions, offering free home visits to all. For more
details visit www.omalleyfunerals.co.uk
