The historicalrole model of the literary title character was Hieronymus Carl FriedrichFreiherr von Münchhausen (1720-1797), who was endowed with anastonishing storytelling talent and exuberant fabulous enthusiasm, butdid not himself write his stories on paper. The special postage stamp“300th Anniversary of the Birth of Baron von Munchausen” is nowappearing on the occasion of his milestone birthday. In 1490, the Roman-Germanking and later emperor Maximilian I commissioned the brothers Janettoand Francesco de Tasso to set up regular postal connections. This postalroute, by which letters from Innsbruck (the site of Maximilian I’s mainresidence) to the Netherlands and to Italy could be sent, is considered thefirst permanently operating, centrally organized postal route in the HolyRoman Empire, making the year 1490 the founding year of the modernEuropean postal system. The Imperial Post Office was founded in the16th century and was also run by the de Tasso family. Around 1800, allCentral European cities were connected by regular postal routes, but nolonger only by the Imperial Post Office, which repeatedly had to cederoutes to imperial post and regional post offices.June 2020 233
