Your award-winning LOCAL estate agent
Good morning friends , Lyn Valley and West Exmoor neighbours!
By now you will probably be aware the government recently announced that
Estate Agents should return to work in order to kick start England's property
market, and to allow those whose house moves have been frozen to get on
with moving.
Since the government’s announcement, we have been working hard to create
a set of new 'Covid-19' compliant working practices that will reduce risk to our
communities, staff, friends and families.
Please be assured that the safety of the Lyn Valley communities which we are
all part of, is more important to us than anything…. And I can guarantee that it
matters more to us than any other Estate Agent who markets property in our
area from elsewhere ....
We will be re-opening our office in Lynton with a 'one in, one out' policy and by
appointment only. If you have any questions please do get in touch and we'll
be happy to answer your concerns and provide you with a summary of our new
Working Practices and Safety Measures.
Please share this post to other members of our community and keep an eye on
our website and social media. It is the best way we can share information
quickly in these constantly changing times.
Thank you for reading.
Sad times for the Valley of Rocks Hotel, Lynton
Shearings / National Holidays Collapse
The owner of Shearings, the coach holidays provider, has crashed into
administration resulting in the immediate loss of 2,500 jobs and thousands of
customers' holidays being cancelled. EY, the administrator to Specialist
Leisure Group, confirmed on 22 May that it had made redundant more than
2,000 staff who had been furloughed under the government's job retention
scheme. The grim news adds to the fast-growing toll of job losses across the
economy as the coronavirus crisis continues to wreak havoc with industries
such as leisure and travel. SLG's operations include brands such as National
Holidays, UK Breakaways, Coast & Country Hotels, Bay Hotels, Country Living
Hotels, and Wallace Arnold Travel. All have ceased trading with immediate
effect and the hotel chains will not reopen following the insolvency.
In a statement, EY said it had tried to find a buyer to maintain the travel group
as a going concern but that it had not been possible. It added that "the vast
majority of customers" were expected to have financial protection from one of
the Confederation of Passenger Transport, Bonded Coach Holidays, ATOL or
ABTA, or through their credit or debit card issuer.
SLG traces its origins to the establishment of the Happiways escorted tours
operation in 1903. Shearings Holidays is one of the most prominent coach
tour operators in the UK, serving more than 170 destinations in the UK,
Europe and further afield. The business was set up by Herbert Shearing, and
marked its centenary last year. Lone Star became the owner of the group
through a wider portfolio of assets it took control of in 2015.
Return of Woodside Bridge ‘- joy for years to come’
7
Those missing Exmoor can look forward to a walk across the newly reinstated
Woodside Bridge in the National Park’s stunning East Lyn Valley once
government restrictions lift. Contractors working with the National Park‘s
Ranger and Field Services teams finally craned the long-awaited bridge into
place, paid for by the community following a £65K fundraising drive led by the
Lyn Community Development Trust in partnership with the National Park’s
CareMoor for Exmoor scheme.
The new 18m bridge is built with Exmoor oak sourced sustainably from the
National Park’s own woodlands, milled locally by Wedgewood Construction and
designed and installed by leading footbridge specialists, CTS Bridges in
partnership with Avon Construction. It was assembled on site and special
groundworks were undertaken to allow access for the new bridge to be craned
onto the abutments of the former bridge. All this took place under strict
Government Covid-19 guidelines to ensure worker and public safety. The
route, which meanders along the beautiful tree-lined banks of the East Lyn
River has long been a favourite of locals and visitors and allows walkers to
enjoy a gentle circular walk returning via Middleham Memorial Gardens
planted in memory of victims of the notorious 1952 flood, which decimated
much of Lynmouth.
Suzette Hibbert, Lyn Community Development Trust Trustee and Deputy Mayor
said: "To say how delighted I am to see the bridge back in place is an
understatement. The generosity of our community and our visitors, the work of
our volunteers and the unwavering support and expertise of the National Park
Authority, has made it possible for the trustees of the Lyn Community
Development Trust to see through the successful outcome of this project.
Thank you to all involved."
Dear Readers,
Holiday time . . . . .
As another month passes and we start to come out of “lockdown” I thought we
could have a look at some of the better travel apps. Spain has, at the time of
writing as Phase 2 starts, decided that hotels etc. can reopen after almost
three months. There will be many offers appearing in the coming weeks as the
Spanish government has said from 1 July people will be able to come here
without having to be in quarantine for two weeks,
For those of you looking to get away, what can you do? Start with
www.SkyScanner.net An app, and website whose primary purpose is flights,
but in more recent years also include hotels and car hire. The flights shown
are “scheduled” to fly but in these difficult times, may not be guaranteed. So
once we have managed to get to our chosen destination, what next? First up
is car hire. www.rentalcars.com Again a handy app and also online. This site
searches hundreds of cars at your destination. Recently following a minor (!)
incident with my car (by minor I mean bending the back axle when it hit a
manhole cover that had lifted and was hidden in a deep puddle) I needed a
hire car and putting my details in found Centauro Car Hire were the cheapest
and not too far away. Although I could book through the app, I found the price
and then booked and paid online direct with the car hire company website.
Why? I find the app is great to find a price, but sometimes there are unseen
restrictions, but booking direct there are none. For insurance I generally use
Globelink (for Expats) although I know www.comparethemarket.com has a
comparison site, which although it is turned off at the moment for COVID-19,
when it is switched on will give you all the information you need. Finally, what
to do once you are away. Take a look at www.viator.com Enter the name of the
place you are visiting, and it will give you a list of attractions and offers.
Finally, stay safe.
Please Like The Lynton Advertiser’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/
Ensure you travel safely as the lockdown eases
No one sets out to cause a crash when they
take to the road, yet the recent easing of Covid-
19 restrictions was marred across Devon and
Cornwall by some serious injuries and deaths
on the region’s highways.
Now partners committed to making Devon and
Cornwall’s roads safer are urging motorists to
take some practical steps to ensure they have a trouble free journey and to
relieve pressure on the NHS.
South West Peninsula Road Safety members remain very concerned about the
number of serious collisions that have taken place in recent weeks and are
asking before you travel to:
• check your vehicle,
• take your time and
• be more observant.
June recipes from Riverford Organic Farmers
In our locked down household we are finding ourselves constantly snacking and
have been in search of a healthier option.
Kale chips As addictive as ordinary crisps but full of vitamin A, C and calcium.
Preheat oven to 190°C/Gas 5. Lay a sheet of greaseproof paper on a non-stick
tray. Toss the kale leaves in a little oil, barely enough to coat. Lay the leaves on
the tray in a single layer and gently press them as flat as you can on the tray.
Sprinkle with sea salt. Bake for 6-10 minutes until they are starting to turn brown
at the edges. Keep a close eye on them as they burn easily.
Celeriac with its nobbly appearance, is one of those veg that looks a bit
intimidating and often gets neglected at the bottom of the box. Turning it into
crisps is a great way to concentrate its flavour. Deep-fry celeriac shavings (made
using a vegetable peeler) in sunflower oil, then drain well. Sprinkled with flaked
sea salt and black pepper or smoked paprika they are very moreish. The same
method will also work with parsnips and sweet potato.
Potato peelings make a great zero waste snack. It couldn’t be easier – shake the
peel in a bowl with a glug of olive oil, season and roast on a tray for 20 mins at
200 degrees turning occasionally to check they go golden but don’t burn. It
works really well with sweet potato and beetroot, too, or a mix of all three.
News from the Exmoor Pony Centre
Ashwick, Dulverton TA22 9QE
These are strange times we are living
through and, like everywhere else, the
Pony Centre is in lockdown. Most of our
ponies have been put out to grass at the
Centre or taken to other grazing sites in
order to cut down on work, but all are still
being checked daily in accordance with
animal welfare requirements. A few
ponies still need to be exercised however,
either to control their weight or for other
health reasons, and they are being ridden
daily. Late foals, Andy and Banksy (in
photo) are still having extra rations to
bring them up to weight.
We are entering what would normally be our busiest time of year for visitors
and events, and this is when we make around 80% of our trading income.
Somehow we have to make up this deficit if we are going to survive so, like
every other charity, we are appealing for help. We are making savings where
we can. Our staff are furloughed and Linzi is caring for the ponies on her own,
but we still have to pay the rent and, of course, there are feed bills and
essential veterinary costs for the ponies.
We are immensely grateful to those of our supporters who are undertaking
fundraising challenges for us through Just Giving and other methods, and to
everyone who has sent us a donation in response to our appeal. Artist Jane
Wills is raising money for us by raffling a limited edition print of her beautiful
painting of Exmoor Ponies, and four year old Jakson is doing a 2.6km trot on
his hobby horse! All these and more are on our Facebook page.
We are keen to stay in touch with supporters and followers through this
difficult time and we have launched a kids club on our website with
downloadable games and puzzles which can be accessed from the home page
by following the link to Kids Club.
Finally, we send all of you our good wishes and hope you are staying well.
MAYORS COVID-19 NEWSLETTER – MAY 2020
Dear Lynton and Lynmouth,
I am writing to you all as we move through the seventh week of ‘lockdown’
under these necessary restrictions, within Government guidelines, for keeping
us all safe and healthy as this global pandemic works its way around the
world. We seem to have entered a new ‘normal’ following a number of weeks
where lots of schemes and support mechanisms were quickly developed and
put in place. These are now operating well and I believe all those needing support
in our community are covered by our Zone Captain Response team or other
measures. The community spirit has been fantastic as we all would expect
in Lyn Valley and I would like to thank all those who have stepped up or gone
beyond the usual to help their fellow citizens. There are many cases of
innovation and initiative being demonstrated across the Parish including food
and service providers now moved to delivery and take away options, different
means of working and support, all being developed with our community and
survival of small businesses in mind.
LETA – Lyn Economic and Tourism Alliance - have met twice since the lockdown
began and are working hard with Exmoor National Park, our MP, local
and regional support groups to make sure we and our small businesses, are at
the forefront of planning and development for when we can start trading and
encouraging visitors again.
Lynton & Lynmouth Town Council continues to provide services and functions
whilst compliant with Social Distancing requirements and our responsibility for
Staff Health and Safety. Our workforce are able to manage essential tasks
maintaining valuable assets which would deteriorate and waste years of
financial investment were we not to manage them whilst in lockdown,
eg putting greens, Manor Green, both cemeteries, bracken in Valley of Rocks
etc. We also continue to address our role under Environmental legislation regarding
litter, street waste and bins to maintain a healthy, clean space for the
community.
Another summer event has been cancelled for 2020 with Pleasure Dome
Theatre having to put off A Midsummers Nights Dream until 2021 due to the
virus restrictions.
I hope you are all bearing up to the pressures and difficulties which the
lockdown has brought on. Thank you to all who have helped keep things
together for everyone. I look forward to a time when we can get back to what is
likely to be a rather different normal,
Exmoor National Park launches Covid-19 Response Fund
Exmoor National Park Authority is
offering financial help to
organisations impacted by the
Covid-19 pandemic who contribute
significantly to the work of the
National Park, through the launch of
a new scheme.
The Exmoor National Park Covid-19
Response Fund offers fast-track
grants of up to £1,000 to charities,
community groups and other partners that contribute to the two founding
principles of all UK National Parks:
1. To conserve and enhance the natural beauty, wildlife and cultural
heritage of the National Park.
2. To promote opportunities for public understanding and enjoyment of the
area’s special qualities.
A total of £20,000 has been ringfenced to support organisations facing shortterm
challenges due to Covid-19, such as a loss of income or increasing costs,
or towards initiatives that will help them adapt to life with the virus and plan for
recovery.
Dan James, Exmoor National Park’s Sustainable Economy Manager, said:
“We’re very aware of the impact the virus is having on the many partner
organisations we work with to keep Exmoor special, and that not all have
access to conventional support mechanisms. We really value the contribution
these local organisations make towards the work of the National Park and
hope that our Response Fund will go some way towards helping them build the
necessary resilience to survive these incredibly difficult times.”
All applications received by 1June 2020 will be considered for support, with
decisions made within no more than two weeks.
Further applications will be taken after this subject to availability of funds.
The first edition of the Lynton & Lynmouth Advertiser as shown above, was
printed in letterpress by the Guildford Press in Lynton in July 1980 and at
intervals thereafter until 2005 (edition 65). Since 2005 it has been published
every month without a break, and this edition for June 2020 is number 252.
The Advertiser has undergone many changes since 2005 including moving
from the original larger B/W size to A4, and then to a more attractive and
economic A5 size in colour, printed digitally.
The printed Advertisers are still delivered to most of Lynton and Lynmouth but
now our distribution includes towns and villages within a twenty mile radius.
It is also sent out each month to a growing number on our online mailing list.
We are committed to improving our publication and to keep us up to date with
the latest trends a brilliant new website was recently created for us by Andy at
https://www.lyntonadvertiser.com with newer, more compatible and userfriendly
software and a simpler interface for ordering adverts and payment.
We also have a popular page at www.Facebook.com/LyntonAdvertiser with
over 800 Likes, and 850 plus Followers.
We thank our advertisers, contributors, readers and helpers for their
ongoing support without which our publication would not be possible.
Lynmouth Coastguard Search and Rescue
Over the last few weeks Lynmouth Coastguard have been on
duty providing intelligence by way of mutual aid patrols for
the Police as requested by Mark Langworthy, and latterly
hi-visibility safety patrols due the high number of visitors
frequenting the area due to the relaxation of the lockdown
rules.
We would like to thank everyone for their support during
these difficult times, we have been happy to help to keep our community as
safe as possible, but due to the new rules we will be returning to normal duties,
search and rescue, rope rescue and water rescue with effect from Sunday 31
May, extended from 26 May due to the high number of people visiting the
coast.
Stay Safe : To Search : Save : To Rescue
In an emergency or in difficulty on the coast dial 999 and ask for the
On-street parking enforcement resumed
On-street parking enforcement was reinstated by Devon
County Council on 18 May with parking enforcement officers
deployed to areas where issues with increasing numbers of
visitors were raised by communities, Police, and local County
Council members.
Officers will be patrolling central areas of local communities to
maintain the availability of short stay on-street parking, and to
ensure that drivers continue to park safely.
Grace periods will continue to be offered on expired residents’ permits until 30
June. Everyone using pay and display areas are asked to adhere to social
distancing guidelines and are encouraged to pay for parking ‘hands free’ using
the Phone and Pay app. Anyone paying by cash at a parking meter is asked to
ensure they use hand sanitiser before and after using the meter.
Parking enforcement officers will continue to be instructed to follow social distancing
rules and good hand hygiene.
SELAINE SAXBY, MP
Enjoy the Great British Outdoors
The key change to the lockdown restrictions that has been
announced is that we can exercise more frequently and for
longer. Travelling for exercise is now permitted, with a
number of important caveats. It is clear from the May 11
guidance that travel is only for day trips, and not overnight
stays, and second homeowners should not be returning
which will hopefully address a number of concerns residents
have raised with me.
I am hopeful the RNLI will shortly resume their fantastic lifeguard services on
our beaches and that we can take to the immense Atlantic Ocean again where
social distancing is possible with ease.
My recent tourism survey raised some concerns about when tourists would be
able to return. However, it was consistently felt that our watersports sector
should be the first to reopen, and as a fitness enthusiast myself I warmly
welcome the opportunity for additional activity. I know that many other
constituents have wanted to go angling and play golf, as well as other sports,
and they will welcome being able to do so. Garden centres re-opened on
Wednesday 13 May as well, so for the keen gardeners amongst you, and
everyone that has written to me about them, hopefully this is good news.
The most important thing with these changes, is that these extra trips out are
only where social distancing can be followed. Scientists advise that the risk of
infection outside is significantly lower than inside which is why outdoor leisure
pursuits are first to partially resume. We must recognise the virus has not gone
away and continue to practice safe social distancing wherever we are. In
addition, remember to wash your hands frequently for 20 seconds, with soap to
reduce the risk of transmission.
I am already liaising with car park owners and operators to ensure they feel able
to open safely, as well as the police and the RNLI to ensure that we are able to
all stay safe moving forward. However, I very much hope that this small step to
enable us to improve our health and well being at such a difficult time will be
welcomed. The full guidance is available online here: https://www.gov.uk/
Can anyone please help ?????
Hallo,
This is Cliff from the Captains House and I am wondering if you are aware that
Irish Bill (you may remember he retired and moved to Bristol) is suffering from
emphysema, has great trouble breathing, and was recently been admitted to
St Georges Care Home in Bristol. Bill lost contact with his only family member
(his sister) who emigrated to the USA many moons ago, and has been in touch
with me inquiring about just about everyone and everything regarding his
beloved Lynton and Lynmouth.
Wouldn't it be nice if a few of us who knew him as being the great character
we all sorely miss, send him a couple of lines on a postcard. His address is
Room 62, St. Georges Care Home, Kenn Rd, St. George, Bristol BS5 7PD.
If anyone could help make this possible for a lonely man it would make his
day. Thanks.
Kind Regards
Clifford and Josie
thecaptainshouse@btinternet.com
Another local character remembered …
This time Ken Sprague … and a couple of his always topical sketches. Among
other things Ken may be remembered for was starting the Lynton Farmers
Market about which he was passionate, a few months before he died.
Minehead Literary Festival announces winners of adults'
short story competition
Inevitably this year’s Festival, like so many other events, was overtaken by the
coronavirus endemic. Nevertheless, Tessa Hadley, one of our country’s leading
writers and patron of Minehead Literary Festival, judged this year's entries, the
title for 2020 being The Secret.
Tessa said: 'What a rich crop of stories this year! It was a delight to read
them all: what variety of styles and themes and subject matter the writers
came up with - and wonderfully varied ways of interpreting the title. And it
really was – I know everybody says this, but it really was – very difficult to
choose a shortlist - sometimes comparing one story with another was like
comparing chalk with cheese; how to weigh what’s funny and sour, for
instance, against what’s mournful and sweet?
Chosen from over 50 entries, Tessa named John Barnes as the winner for his
original interpretation of The Secret, writing about a man accidentally
privileged to witness a secret ceremony among the stags on Exmoor, where
they gather to rub off their antlers at the end of the season. Tessa said: “... the
whole was carried off with a sure touch, such vivid and moving description; I
couldn’t shake its images from my mind ....”
Coming second was The Woman and the Sea by Susan Mitchinson, about a
woman who turns into a mermaid which “ ... balanced comedy with something
wistful and poignant; and again, so elegantly put together, with great
economy.”
Set in the future, the 3 rd prize for Under The Greenwood Tree went to
Malcolm Welshman whose story “... felt like an exciting use of the genre; an
elegant and striking idea of a couple excavating an ancient library from the
twenty-first century, their eyes opened to a vanished world of feeling.”
The four other shortlisted winners were Nikki Copleston, Dot Lupo,
Christine Human and Janet Howard.
The winning entries will be posted on the MLF website -
Council welcomes extra funding for local authorities
to develop new COVID-19 track and trace plans
Devon County Council has welcomed the
Government’s recent announcement that local
councils are to play a central role in developing new
local track and trace plans for their local areas.
Councils will receive a share of an extra £300 million
to help establish these local plans which will include
co-ordination and management of infection control, tracking and tracing, and
local testing arrangements. Devon County Council will also be one of 11
national Beacon Councils – the only one in the South West – and help lead
and share good practice across the region.
“This will put us at the centre of the local response going forward,” said
Council Leader John Hart. “ …..I am very pleased that we are to be a Beacon
Council and help lead this work in the South West. We will now be at the
forefront of responding and managing the outbreak at a local level …”
An enjoyable flash fiction story from the talented Jan Hunt
30
This was ridiculous. Jane took down his lead. The dog stood
motionless, waiting. She couldn’t keep putting it off. Sooner or
later she was going to have to take him out on her own.
She bent, attached clip to collar, her fingers lingering on warm fur.
Was he too thinking about the dangers that awaited them? He
could be attacked by a delinquent dog, or might jump at a sudden
noise, pull them both into the road. Someone might feed him
poison.
Enough. She opened the front door.
“Off we go.”
Hello world. Goodbye white stick.
