This sayingwas evident just recently whenfour Lions Clubs from acrosstwo Districts and their DistrictGovernors got together to makea difference at Milford RegionalMedical Center (MRMC). Weaddressed a need which no singleclub could have handled on theirown.Combining EffortsResults in SuccessIn late April, several LionsClubs in the Metrowest areawere contacted by an RN atMRMC. There was a need forthe facility to provide opportunitiesfor those who were hospitalizedduring this challenging timefor everyone. Patients have beenunable to see their loved ones dueto the current restrictions placedon visitors and the facility had ashortage of tablets to aid in facilitatingcommunication.Holliston Lion Steve Apesosdesigned a welcome page forpatients using the tablets.Rather than wait for individualclubs to fund units on theirown, four club Presidents fromthe Milford, Mendon, Medway,and Holliston Lions Clubsbanded together and conducteda conference call to see what theycould do. Thanks to their efforts,and the additional donations ofthe District Governors from theirrespective Districts, the clubswere able to fund the purchaseof eight Samsung tablets.VETERINARY CAREfor your companionThese Lions, representing Holliston, Medway, Mendon and Milford, met virtually to come up with a solutionto help Milford Regional Medical Center patients stay in touch with loved ones. Yes, that'strue according to Al Scaramella,Grand Knight of St. Mary'sKnights of Columbus Council14224. Through their annualcharity raffles, they have donatedover $210,000 over the pasteleven years to the Holliston PantryShelf, Senior Center, disabledveterans’ organizations, Habitatfor Humanity, and other localcharities. This year's raffle beganjust before the Coronavirus Pandemicstarted and, you guessedit, the virus knocked raffle ticketsales to a trickle. Al pointed outthat the charitable organizationsbeing supported need funds morethan ever this year - and it's at atime when the knights can't getin front of people to solicit theirsupport. So, how can you be ahero?Al feels, "Everyone who buysa ticket or a book of tickets isalready a hero because they'rehelping hundreds of peoplewith their purchase. Hundreds!The Pantry Shelf serves about200 families - that's families, notpeople. The Holliston SeniorCenter, even temporarily closeddue to the pandemic, still cooksand sends meals to many homesduring this trying time, checkingon those seniors to assure they'reokay. Hospitalized disabled veterans,mostly in the Northeast, receivesupport through IPods forWounded Veterans, a non-profitwhich donates IPods, IPads, andother electronic equipment tosoldiers while they're recoveringso they can keep in touch withtheir families and keep up withevents. Also, Homes for OurTroops, based in Taunton, buildshomes for disabled veterans,each one specifically designed forthat soldier's needs. Habitat forHumanity donations have beenmade to help build or rehab thehomes being done in Hollistonthe past several years. Everydonation has been so gratefullyreceived that the recipients believethat heroes made it possible.Those heroes are the individualswho purchased the raffle ticketswhich made the donations possible.That's you.”Covid-19 has made it impossiblefor the council to conductgroup sales at Fiske's, the Superette,Holliston Hardware, CoffeeHaven, or the area grocerystores so far. That means ticketrevenue is down, very down, sofar. You can help change this in acouple ways - buy tickets or makea donation. For tickets, pleasecontact any St. Mary's Knightif you know one; they have tickets.You can also buy tickets ormake a donation by sending yourname, address, and phone numberalong with your check (payableto KofC #14224) to TOMANGUISH, 542 WINTERSTREET, HOLLISTON, MA01746.
