[Source: Parkway School District] news briefs CHESTERFIELD County sues local gym over early opening St. Louis County announced on May 11 that it was going to court to force the closure of two House of Pain fitness center locations that have defied the county’s stayat-home order. Specifically, it is seeking to file a temporary restraining order against both of House of Pain Gym Service’s locations – one in Chesterfield and another in Maryland Heights – for disregarding the county’s order stating that gyms and fitness centers must remain closed. One day prior to the suit filing, on May 10, House of Pain’s CEO Joe Corbett posted a video on Facebook stating that he had made a decision to keep both of the gyms open for business despite an order from St. Louis County to close their doors. In another update video made on May 14, Corbett said both locations were open and are being actively attended by members. “I want to be very clear, our purpose for doing this is not based on publicity, or picking a fight, or a showdown with the government,” Corbett said in the May 10 video. “That’s not our intention at all.” He went on to describe the county’s call for closure as an overreach. Both gym locations opened their doors to members on May 4 despite the fact that the county’s stay-at-home order stated that select businesses could open no sooner than May 18. Gyms are not a category of businesses that will be allowed to open their doors on that date. “We’re doing what we feel is right for small business and right for our members and the people we serve,” Corbett said in the May 10 video. The suit was filed Monday, May 11 in the St. Louis County Circuit Court after multiple warnings were issued to the gyms. House of Pain was given a deadline of 5 p.m. on May 10 to shut down. In addition to calling for both of House of Pain’s locations to close, the suit asks that Corbett supply a comprehensive list of names and contact information for individuals who have entered the gyms’ premises. This information would be sent to the county’s contact tracing team. The county also wants to test each of the individuals on the list for COVID-19 and for House of Pain to cover that cost. As of press time, the case remains ongoing. Skydiving without the free fall The long-awaited indoor skydiving center is almost here. At the Planning Commission’s virtual meeting May 11, a site development plan was approved for SkyGroup Investments LLC for 1.6 acres located north of N. Outer 40 Road and east of Boone’s Crossing. iFly, a global operator of indoor skydiving centers, plans to construct a 6,713-square-foot indoor skydiving facility on a lot adjacent to Topgolf. iFly offers guests a simulated skydiving experience in a vertical wind tunnel. According to the company’s website, four fans are located in the optimal position for flow quality to drive the air around a simple and efficient loop. The airflow is narrowed below the flying chamber to speed and smooth the flow. The building will be a two-story structure with an overall height of 65 feet, required for the tunnel airflow systems and airflow path, according to Mike Knight, assistant city planner. In accordance with the Chesterfield Valley design policies, materials for the building [stucco, brushed aluminum, metal cornice and glass] and its colors [red, tan, aluminum and white] are largely the same on all facades in the area and will be compatible with adjacent buildings. According to Mason Becker, design project manager with ARCO/Murray Design Build, the exterior design accentuates height as the catalyst of experiencing flight. “All the exterior elements draw the CREVE COEUR Portion of Ladue Road closed Drivers who regularly use Ladue Road between Interstate 270 and Mason Road will need to determine alternate routes starting next week. The bridge was scheduled to close after Memorial Day, however, the closure was accelerated to ensure the bridge was reopened to traffic before school starts in the fall. The bridge is scheduled to reopen to traffic by Aug. 11. WILDWOOD Meals for Mercy Jenny Goskie, owner of Jenny Goskie Farmers Insurance Agency in Wildwood and the vice president of the Wildwood Business Association, wanted to find a way to help healthcare professionals working on the frontlines against the COVID-19 pandemic while also supporting the businesses in the local community that were looking for ways to help from a distance. For inspiration, she looked to her peers in Franklin County. Another Famers Insurance agent in that area was reaching out to restaurants to prepare sponsored meals that were then donated to Mercy Hospital Washington in Washington, Missouri. “They were having tremendous success

We knew we wanted to do something, and then we heard about this program.” It was then that Meals for Mercy was born. Goskie launched the St. Louis-area program in the first week of April. Since then, the program has gone on to donate over 700 meals to Mercy Hospital St. Louis while simultaneously giving a total of $5,600 back to local restaurants who have participated. “It didn’t really surprise me, because I know the community we’re in and I know we love to give back,” Goskie said. According to Goskie, every restaurant that has been contacted has immediately jumped in to participate. “It’s been great,” Goskie said. “I’ve been reaching out via email, and I haven’t had anyone say they don’t want to participate. Everyone has been so gracious and willing to help.” Once a restaurant says they want to participate, they are added to the program’s schedule. A different restaurant handles a different meal each day. Currently, the program delivers meals three times Assistant a week. People wanting to sponsor a meal can call the restaurant directly, place an order and pay for the donation without any middleman handling the finances. This means that not only is a meal donated to the program, but the entire $8 cost goes right into the pocket of the restaurant. The daily goal of the program is to get 50 meals sponsored for frontline workers at Mercy Hospital Mari St. Janko, Louis PA-C in Creve Coeur. Goskie oversees the transport of the ready-to-eat meals to the hospital every day.
