Allstate Vehicle and Property Insurance Co., Allstate Fire and Casualty Insurance Co. © 2019 Allstate Insurance Co. 11727929 We need umpires In your April 22 edition, the opening editorial talked about “Today and Tomorrow.” Twice you mentioned we will be able to go back to “yelling at the umpire.” I find that to be a terrible thing to say. As a 20-year umpire at varying levels, including collegiate, that’s a bad message to print. We have lost umpire membership in recent years due to abuse of officials happening too regularly. Your publication, sarcastic or not, shouldn’t ever condone that activity. We need more people to sign up to be umpires. High school games have been forced to use one, instead of the normal two umpires, on many recent occasions because our membership is too low. Let’s try and encourage people to be better tomorrow, not continue to do negative actions. Adam Minnick Regarding gerrymandering Gerrymandering. What is it and why do we care? It’s about drawing lines on a map, and who gets to do the drawing. Amendment 1, added to the Missouri constitution by a 62% voter approval, mandates that a non-partisan demographer draw the map as fair as possible using public voter data. However, some members of the Missouri House of Representatives don’t want to abide by the amendment, so they’re trying to pass Senate Joint Resolution 38. SJR38 would eliminate the nonpartisan state demographer and give all redistricting responsibility to two commissions, the House Independent Bipartisan Citizens Commission and the Senate Independent Bipartisan Citizens Commission. Our votes are supposed to matter equally. You and I are supposed to have the same amount of power. But if SJR 38 passes, we will lose the opportunity to vote the way we want. Instead, the House and Senate commissions will decide how to redistrict, based upon the new 2020 census data. Because the two commissions are full of political insiders, they’ll draw the new district lines so that politicians remain in office, regardless of how you and I decide to vote. Our democracy is supposed to be a point of American pride and unity. Don’t let politicians in Jefferson City get away with manipulating our districts to guarantee that they stay in power. Please join me and call your Missouri State Representative in Jefferson City and urge them to vote “No” on SJR 38. Now is the time to protect our democracy. Brian Andrich Regarding ‘Much like Ike’ John Stoeffler [April 22, “Much Like Ike”] got it wrong in his confused description of the COVID-19 medical community’s mission and goal. The mission never was “to save everyone’s life” as suggested by Mr. S. It was and is, to attempt to meet the goal of saving as many lives as possible. Trump’s ongoing incompetence is the principal cause of worldwide failure to meet that goal, thereby creating the Trump pandemic. Also, Mr. S’s so-called “analogy” is fundamentally flawed because Ike did, in fact, postpone D-Day on the advice of weather experts who told him that success or failure might turn on the difference in forecasts for June 5 [the original date set for D-Day] and June 6. Ike knew that heeding expert advice meant a costly logistics nightmare of holding, for 24 hours, thousands of vessels and tens of thousands of seasick soldiers aboard crowded troopships already in rough waters, as well as massive land and air forces in England poised to reinforce the D-Day landings. We all know how things turned out: Ike did not push ahead on June 5. Instead he won the day on June 6. Now a mission’s success or failure turns on Trump’s heeding the medical community’s advice for dealing with the Trump pandemic’s current wave while preparing for the worst: a more virulent wave occurring before a vaccine or curative treatment is developed [none was ever found for the 1918-1919 Spanish Flu which cured itself only after its two waves killed as many as 100 million people worldwide, including more than 650,000 Americans. Admittedly, Trump is no Eisenhower, but if he fails to heed the medical community, many more preventable deaths will occur with no chance of a meaningful economic recovery during the current administration or even during the next one. Bill Howard Election reforms There are many things up in the air right now, but our democracy shouldn’t be one of them. Experts estimate we need at least $4 billion to make sure states can prepare for elections in the time of coronavirus. Otherwise millions of voters might be disenfranchised. Congress passed $400 million which gets the process started. Every voter needs safe options to vote by mail, early and on election day. Congress must pass additional funding to make sure our November elections are prepared for this unprecedented year.
