Why is Blue Light Protection
Important?
High energy blue light is more prevalent
than ever - in cell phones, TV’s, LED lights
and sunlight itself. Visible blue light is
the first high-energy light in the spectrum
that we are able to see, and it’s only a few
wavelengths away from ultraviolet light.
Because blue light has more energy per
photon of light than other colors in the
visible spectrum, it is therefore more likely
to cause damage when absorbed by various
cells in our body.
While no studies have proven that blue light
increases the risk of macular degeneration,
laboratory studies have shown that blue
light can cause cellular damage, either
directly to retinal cells or to the supporting
retinal pigment epithelial cells directly
below the retina.*

Why is MPOD Important?
In addition to their antioxidant properties
and their role in maintaining the health
and function of the human macula, lutein
and zeaxanthin are also responsible for the
characteristic yellow coloration of the macular
pigment. This pigmentation plays a primary
role in taming blue wavelengths of light, which
have been shown to be more dangerous than
longer wavelengths of visible light since they
are more energetic and are therefore more
efficient at generating reactive oxygen species.
Macular Pigment Optical Density instrument measures
lutein and zeaxanthin concentration in the retina.
Because lutein and zeaxanthin concentrate
in the macula at levels that are 10,000 times
greater in the blood, tests that measure
macular pigment, such as heterochromatic
flicker photometry (HFP), are able to detect
the nutritional health of the macula. Several
studies show that lutein and zeaxanthin
supplementation improve Macular Pigment
