Karla
Text: SUANNE ENGELBRECH Photos : RHONA KLOPPER Make-up: ESTIE SWART ARTISTRY
Netball Scoop’s Player of the Yeartoekennings
in Liverpool asook
Suid-Afrikaanse netbalspeler, Karla
Pretorius, het met Get It gesels oor die
warrelwind-jaar wat sy agter die rug
het.
Karla is ‘n spanspeler en beskou dit
as die rede waarom netbal so gepas
is vir haar. “Op skool was ek aan alle
sportsoorte blootgestel. My ouers het
gevoel in spansport. “Ek onthou
hoedat die netbaltoere op skool vir
almal ‘n hoogtepunt was. Jy was deel
vir my baie opwindend was.”
Karla het in Pretoria grootgeword en
haar skooljare daar deurgebring.
“Die universiteitslewe was vir my
iets besonders.”
10 Get It Bloemfontein March 2020 getitmagazine.co.za/bloemfontein

Karla het begin om Menslike
Bewegingskunde te swot en later
oorgeslaan na Dieetkunde. “Omdat ek
vir die universiteit netbal gespeel het,
het sporttoere my baie weggehou
van die kampus. Ek is vandag baie
toer. Hier het sy haar netballoopbaan
begin opbou en al hoe meer
ondervinding opgedoen. Later in
dieselfde jaar, maak sy haar debuut
by die 2011-Netbal-wêreldbeker as
lid van die SA nasionale netbalspan,
die Spar Proteas. “Tydens my tyd as
‘n SA netbalspeler het ek regtigwaar
‘n wonderlike tyd beleef, ook met my
studies tussendeur. Baie mense dink
as jy ‘n atleet wil word in enige sport,
jy direk ná skool vir ‘n nasionale span
moet speel of aan ‘n sportklub moet
behoort om iets te bereik, maar ek
dink mens kan die beste van albei
wêrelde hê.”
In 2015 kry Karla ‘n kans om in Sydney,
Australië, en ook in Engeland netbal te
speel en dié spanne te verteenwodig.
“Baie netbalspelers wat professioneel
wil speel, kan dit nie in Suid-Afrika
doen nie. Die sport kwalifiseer nie as ‘n
professionele sport nie, wat beteken
jy word nie daarvoor betaal nie.” Karla
bring die helfte van haar jaar oorsee
en die ander helfte in SA deur. Sy
speel tans klubnetbal vir Australië
en Engeland, en keer terug na SA
wanneer die Proteas se ligas begin.
Tydens Wêreldbeker-toernooie, wat
elke vier jaar plaasvind, speel sy vir
Suid-Afrika se Proteas.
Karla vertel, “Jy kan as netbalspeler
oorsee ‘n gesinslewe hê en ‘n
volhoubare leefstyl geniet.” In haar
baie projekte oorsee betrokke
is. “In Australië werk ek as ‘n
gemeenskapsontwikkelingsbeampte.
Ons loods verskeie projekte in die
gemeenskap en maak mense deel
daarvan.” Sy vertel dat sy graag
wanneer sy uittree uit netbal by
‘n skool sou wou aansluit as
netbalorganiseerder. “Ek wil
graag my kennis oordra aan
ander. Dit is vir my iets om
te oorweeg wanneer ek nie
meer professioneel netbal
speel nie.”
Karla en haar man,
Werner, het mekaar
as studente
aan die Universiteit van die Vrystaat
ontmoet.
Bloemfontein. Vir hulle is en sal die
Vrystaat altyd hul tuiste wees. “Mense
vra gedurig of ons vir altyd oorsee
gaan bly en of ons gaan terugkom
huis toe. Vir ons is dit ‘n uitgemaakte
saak dat ons wel in die toekoms
sal teurgkeer na Bloemfontein. Die
geleenthede in Bloemfontein word by
die dag meer, ons sien dit.”
Klink ‘n glasie op
KolleGin
‘n Grappie wat oornag ‘n suksesstorie geword
het, bring nuwe betekenis aan ‘mooi drankies’
wanneer drie geurige, lewenslustige ginvervaardigers
uiting gee aan hul kreatiwiteit.
Text: SUANNE ENGELBRECHT Photos : SUPPLIED BY KOLLEGIN
12 Get It Bloemfontein March 2020 getitmagazine.co.za/bloemfontein

KolleGin-entrepreneurs, Annel Oosthuizen, Erina Cillié-du Preez en Elizma Maritz
maak nie net ‘n heerlike glasie gin (of soos onder taalpuriste bekend, jenewer)
“Ek is
pragtige drinkie het my onmiddellik bekoor.
terselfdertyd goed
voel oor haarself.
so spesiaal. Baie vroue het eers gedink dat
KolleGin badskuim is omdat dit so mooi verpak
is,” lag Annel.
Die drie Bloemfontein-vriendinne staan vir
niemand terug wanneer dit by hul passie kom
nie. Gin-vervaardiging is ‘n dominante bedryf
eweknieë. Ons handelsmerk draai om vroue en wat vir hulle mooi en aanloklik is;
‘gaan groot of gaan huis toe’.
terselfdertyd goed voel oor haarself.
Bachelorette party
destinations for every
bride-to-be
A bachelorette party is the
perfect excuse to party up
a storm or bond with your
bffs in a different city or even
country. Whether you’re
looking for a Las Vegas kind
of partying, a wine-filled
weekend, an Airbnb
sleepover or a Balineseinspired
‘eat pray love’
vacation, the options
are endless. Depending
on the bride-to-be’s
personal style, there’s a
great destination for a

celebration somewhere out there.
For the wine-loving bride-to-be,
consider throwing a vineyard
bachelorette party trip with wine
tastings and a tour of various wineries.
Plan on touring three to five vineyards,
and have a different game or activity
to do at each venue. Start it off with
some icebreaker games at the first
venue, so guests can get to know one
another. Then plan yard games, wineor
wedding-related games, or crafting
sessions at the remaining wineries.
Along with tasting the different wines,
these activities will keep this vineyard
bachelorette party action packed
and fun for everyone. Have a filled
picnic basket on one of the farms with
the girls. Choose from vineyards in
Franschhoek such as Boschendal or
Babylonstoren.
A celebration at the beach makes
for the perfect ocean backdrop and
coastal colour palettes. Whether you’re
going for an upscale vibe or a relaxed
vibe, a seaside shower highlights
the best parts of summer and is
amendable to any vibe. A beachside
shower does not mean bonfires and
beach towels. Include all the elements
you would for a more formal setting
such as a table, beautiful déco, lovely
chairs and placemats. Choose wooden
furniture, as it will be sturdy on the
beach sand. The bride and guests
should rather arrive an hour before
sunset, that way more beach-goers
would have already have left the area.
Ensure you keep the gifts away from
the sun and always keep the bride
and guests hydrated with fruit infused
water that makes for the perfect drinks
table. Serve canapés and food that
don’t need to be warmed up and
are easy to eat. After the formalities,
incorporate water activities or just have
light- hearted fun on the beach with
sand between your toes.
For the zen bride-to-be who wants the
last few moments of her unwedded
days to be peaceful and filled with
spa treatments, meditation and great
cuisine, an ‘eat pray love’ themed
bachelorette party will be the perfect
spiritual escape. Escape to a serene
destination such as Mpumalanga for
a weekend away packed with spa
treatments, brunch, mountainous
views and even a game drive at
the Kruger National Park. For an
international experience, book a
trip to Bali where the ‘eat pray love’
phenomenon all started.
For the party girl, book an Airbnb
house for the weekend to a party
capital with great nightlife such as
Long Street in Cape Town, Florida
Road in Durban or Sandton in
Johannesburg. Ensure the house
has all the necessities for a perfect
weekend away: pool, balcony, enough
bedrooms, a spacious lounge and
make sure it is safe. Book a house
close to the central party spots for
convenience. Have an itinerary for the
weekend such as having a brunch
spread at the house with bottomless
mimosas, a game night before
partying, a pyjama party and of course,
a jam-packed weekend of partying and
trying out new spots.

How to entertain guests during
cocktail hour
The cocktail hour is one of the important parts of a wedding as it ties together
the main events of a wedding. It is also when the wedding party takes pictures
and allows guests to mingle, relax and have fun. In addition, it also helps guests
and the wedding party transition from ceremony mode to party mode. Fill that
gap between the ceremony and the reception with a little creativeness, a little
thoughtfulness and these unique tips to create an experience you and your
guests will love.
Music can make or break a vibe, so take some extra time to choose the music
for your cocktail hour. Think about how you want to make your guests feel. Do
you want the energy to be light-hearted or do you want to set a more upbeat
mood? That should dictate the music you choose. If you’ve hired a live band, it
should be easy for them to create a mood that matches what they’ll be playing
at the reception. But, if you’ve hired a DJ, we recommend doing some research
and letting them know what style you want. If you want to go the extra mile, you
could even make the music a surprise by hiring a mariachi band or brass band
just for the cocktail hour. The music really is the cherry on top of a killer cocktail
hour, so make it count!
Design a lounge area for guests to relax! Creating a lounge area is a unique
way to define a more casual space at your venue and allows you to infuse your
personal style, whether mid-century modern or bohemian. Plus, it gives your
guests a place to gather, relax, and hopefully meet some new people. You can
make a lounge area as simple or as elaborate as you want. You just need comfy
seating, a few end tables so guests can set down their drinks or plates, and a
pretty rug to tie it all together. From there, you can add throw pillows, blankets,
photos, and candles. And don’t be afraid to mix and match seating options, such
as couches, chairs, floor pillows, and poofs.
Create interactive food and drink stations. This could include anything from a
cheese and wine pairing to a side-by-side whiskey tasting to a create-your-own
cocktail bar. Interactive stations get guests out of their seats and give them
something fun and delicious to try while they are waiting for the bridal party
to arrive. If there will be children at your wedding, make sure to include an
interactive element for them as well, such as adding fruit to sparkling water or
creating a mix-and-match snack mix.
Magic of Makalali
Some of the best sightings SA reserves can offer. Charismatic field guides.
And charming bush textures. An authentic African experience awaits
Compiled by: Daniella Graham
From seeking big and small game to telling bushveld tales, the field guides
take you on an extraordinary African adventure.
There’s something wonderfully romantic about Makalali River Lodge, and
the bathtubs that overlook the reserve are one of the highlights.
A Land Cruiser’s engine roars into
action. Hippos groan. Buffaloes grunt.
These are (some of ) the sounds of
Africa. They surrounded us recently
as we sat at a waterhole in the
26000-hectare Aha Makalali Private
Game Reserve near Hoedspruit.
What was that? A lion growling? No,
it was someone’s stomach grumbling
… time for sundowners. It wasn’t long
before we were standing with a cool
G&T in one hand, a stick of dry wors
in the other. Aware of the wildness
around us.
On our first afternoon game drive we’d
already spotted two of the Big Five
and, during our short stay, we’d go on
to see a further two of these big game
animals, as well as a pack of wild dogs
hunting impalas.
We couldn’t possibly take credit for
spotting the game first – the field
guides and trackers are excellent (they
tell us they ‘eat their carrots’) and
they’ve a great sense of humour. When
the message ‘We want to see a spotted
leopard,’ reached our field guide during
a game of broken telephone, he
laughed heartily and joked, ‘Oh, you
want to see a spotted leopard? Today
we were going to look for a plain one!’
We learnt tourism group, Tourvest
is educating even more field guides
through a fully-sponsored course at
the Tourvest Field Guide Academy,
based at the reserve.
The field guides make sundowners
far from ordinary. On our last evening,
lanterns were set up in a circle at a
spot in the reserve. A gin bar to one
side. Comfy cushions scattered in the
middle. It was ‘Bush TV’ at its finest.
Impalas and wildebeest grazed a little
distance away, while daring blackbacked
jackals crept close to the
snack table, hoping to score a piece
The game-viewing experience continues at the
lodges, even while you take a cool splash in the pool.
Pictured here is the Main Lodge pool.
of biltong. They didn’t! As darkness
fell, we heard an unfamiliar sound …
another of the Big Five!
Yes, we’re bragging ... but with some
of the best game viewing South
African reserves can offer – trust
us – it’s tough to leave the game
drives. But the bush adventures
continue at Makalali. You can
choose to stay at the Main Lodge
or River Lodge – both are set in the
reserve without a boundary fence
which fuels your authentic African
experience. The décor, design and
textures at these lodges scream
bushveld, and swimming in any of
the pools becomes a game-viewing
experience. We watched warthogs
wallowing in the mud near the Main
Lodge pool.
At night, an African tale and piece
of sweet fudge was placed by our
turned-down bed. One night, we
found a little decorated box with
a cute handmade pottery animal
inside - ours was a zebra and there
are six others in the collection. This
lovely keepsake was crafted by
artists from Gala Star – a company
that enables underprivileged people
to improve their lives by making art
that’s sold in the tourism market.
getitmagazine.co.za/bloemfontein
The luxurious rooms at the main
lodge are hotel-like and cosy with
a spacious bathroom … and an
outdoor shower. You can get two
rooms with an inter-leading door –
handy for families.
Planning a romantic getaway?
Book for the River Lodge. Perfect
for a honeymoon! And fret not
when they don’t give you a key for
your room – you don’t need one!
The rooms’ design and decor are
charmingly bona fide bushveld –
think a mosquito net-draped bed,
cosy fireplace and comfy seat on
the veranda. And you’ll probably feel
very, very clean because who could
resist a splash in the oh-so-appealing
outdoor shower, indoor shower and
bathtub overlooking the reserve. The
bathrooms are so impressive they
Make a booking
have a bay window seating area, for
goodness sake!
A bush holiday isn’t really complete
without dinner in a boma … try the
sweet home-made bread and the
venison meat dishes which have
a uniquely African touch – think
kudu potjie or crocodile sosaties.
It’s definitely a ditch-the-diet kind
of holiday … in-between brekkie,
lunch and dinner there are pregame
drive snacks – like decadent
choc-chip cookies in the mornings
and afternoon high tea – as well as
bush coffees and sundowners in the
reserve.
In short ... when the toughest part
of your day is dodging wayward
hanging branches as your field
guide seeks a terrific sighting, you
know you’re in a magical place.
Main Lodge superior rooms from R4520 a person sharing, for a maximum of two
people a room and one child under the age of three in a cot. There are interleading
rooms for a maximum of two people a room and children over the age of
two will need their own bed, and are charged at 50 per cent of the adult-sharing
rate. River Lodge suites from R6225 a person sharing with a maximum of two
adults a suite. There’s one family suite for two adults and three children under the
age of 12, charged at 50 per cent of the adult-sharing rate. These rates include
all meals, two game drives daily and a one per cent tourism levy, but exclude
conservation levy. Details: 010-442-5888, aha.co.za and cro@aha.co.za
