You are a big fan of technology. You introduced new ideas and materials
to modern sailing. What is your feeling about the aviation technology
being applied to yachting?
Obviously all the aerodynamics of the aviation industry is extremely
interesting for the sailing industry but also the whole experience in
jet engines. I mean turbines will soon become very interesting for
our yachts.
You were a helicopter pilot, are you still licensed?
I stopped flying three years ago having 3000 hours on my license.
Which Helicopters did you own?
I owned a Eurocopter AS365 Dauphin and a Eurocopter AS350B2
Ecureuil.
What made you decide on a brand rather than another?
The technology of Eurocopter at that time was in my opinion more
modern than any other brand, and their engines, Turbomeca, were
the most affordable.
What did you like most about those machines?
Simplicity! They were using new technologies to simplify a very
complicate machine like a helicopter, which could mean less
problems and less maintenance.
Sergio Loro Piana was a great fan of helicopters. Could you tell us how
you introduced him to this passion?
We were very good friends loving the same holiday locations like
Portofino and St Moritz and I flied him and his family many times to
these locations. We were sailing a lot together with our respective
boats and were logically talking a lot about the advantages of flying
a chopper.. n
Vous aimez particulièrement la technologie. Vous avez d’ailleurs
introduit de nouvelles idées et de nouveaux matériaux dans le yachting
moderne. Que pensez-vous de la technologie de l’aviation appliquée
au yachting ?
De toute évidence, non seulement tout ce qui concerne
l’aérodynamique en aviation est particulièrement intéressant pour
la voile, mais tout ce qui touche à la propulsion l’est également. Je
veux parler des turbines qui présentent le plus grand intérêt pour nos
bateaux.
Vous êtes pilote d’hélicoptère. Avez-vous encore votre licence ?
J’ai mis un terme à ma carrière de pilote il y a trois ans, avec plus de
3000 heures de vol.
Quels hélicoptères avez-vous eu en votre possession?
J’ai eu un Eurocopter AS365 Dauphin et un Eurocopter AS350B2
Ecureuil.
Quels étaient vos critères de sélection ?
La technologie d’Eurocopter, à l’époque, était à mon avis ce qui
se faisait de mieux, et les turbines Turbomeca étaient d’un prix
raisonnable.
Qu’avez-vous particulièrement apprécié avec ces machines ?
Leur simplicité ! De nouvelles technologies étaient utilisées pour
simplifier une machine très compliquée comme peut l’être un
hélicoptère, avec pour résultat moins de problèmes et un entretien
moindre.
Sergio Loro Piana était un grand amateur d’hélicoptère. C’est vous qui
lui avez transmis cette passion ?
Nous étions des amis très proches. Nous aimions les mêmes lieux de
villégiature tels que Portofino ou St Moritz, et je l’ai souvent emmené
en vol, lui et sa famille pour les vacances. Nous avons aussi beaucoup
navigué ensemble, chacun sur son bateau, et nous parlions souvent
des avantages que procure le vol en hélicoptère.. n
