an unsuspecting family will be disconnected from the
electricity grid for 24 hours, and unbeknownst to them,
all their energy needs will be powered from a completely
unexpected source - an 80 strong team of cyclists using
specially adapted bikes. Each time a member of the
family turns on an appliance the Human Power Station
must respond. With billions of dollars of energy wasted
Internet, we have entered a new era of globalization, a level
of interconnection unprecedented in world history. one of the
most important results of this new wave of globalization is our
heightened awareness of how the importance of human rights,
the vast differences between rich and poor, the spread of
disease and the use of Earth’s resources affect us all. Programs
in this series focus on modern global issues, their historical
roots and the exploration of varied viewpoints and solutions.
using comprehensive news footage and commentary from
some of the world’s leading experts, students will gain a greater
understanding of the most important issues affecting the world
today.
FORGOTTeN BRAZil
Far from the beaches of Rio de Janeiro and the futuristic
buildings of brasilia, the nordeste (northeast) region
of brazil has a unique and fascinating history. First
we meet Jose almeia dos Santos, a Sertanejo, one of
those horsemen forgotten by time but who still roam
the Sertao plains. In the state of Rondonia we hear of an
incredible railroad that was built at the turn of the 20th
century in the depths of the amazonian jungle to reach
the rubber trees and their product.
For 24 years, Saddam Hussein and his baath party
executed political rivals, Shias and kurds. a chorus of
testimonials, unearthed mass graves, and captured
We’ll answer vital questions about how and why
Saddam built a police state to shield himself from his
internal and external enemies and how he surrounded
The death penalty has always been surrounded by a
great deal of controversy, and yet little has been said
about those actually responsible for carrying out the
deed itself - the executioners. Where do they come
from? How do they prepare for such work? What effect
does their work have on them? How did the lives of
executioners in the 16th century differ from those of
the 20th century? underlying the long history of this
‘gruesome profession’ and the men who practiced it, is
an extraordinary human adventure intimately linked with
society’s attitudes toward the death penalty.

nice, reasonable people like us are “we,” and strangers
with weird beliefs are “they.” This is how many of us see
the world. but every “us” is somebody else’s “them.”
Those who hold hidden assumptions or stereotypes
consider them a recognition of reality, not a prejudice.
a common reaction is “you might be prejudiced”, but
“I’m a realist”. What is prejudice for “them” is merely a
recognition of “the way things are” for “us”.
This program explores the belief that a person’s
attitude, whether at home, school, or in the community,
has tremendous influence on one’s actions. not only
does our attitude influence our behaviour, but how
others perceive us. changing our attitudes can improve
relationships in all areas of our lives, it’s up to us.
We meet some students who decide to start a school
wide advice column where they notice an interesting
phenomenon-many conflicts arise because of attitude.

Yoga is extremely popular in the West today, yet few
