(NCGSS) in 1986. In 2002, the NCGSS was
renamed Defence Families of Australia.
DFA represents more than 60,000
families and has 8,000 active members.
Membership is free and you can register on

DFA is providing immediate and accurate
information to families through our Infoline

Facebook. eNewsletters allow families to
receive news updates and online surveys
let DFA collect the views of families around
Australia.
Your New National Delegate –
Paul White
After growing up in North Queensland,
I joined the Navy in 1998. I spent time
on Patrol Boats in Darwin on Border
Protection duties and had the pleasure
of decommissioning HMAS Brisbane in
Sydney. I spent a few years between the
two Landing Platform Amphibious during
which time I was deployed twice to the
Middle East Area of Operations, the last of
which was the war in Iraq, 2003.

I discharged from the Navy in 2006 and
have worked in Transport and Logistics
since then, never really straying too far from
the Defence Community. I am currently
working full time for BAE Systems, a
Defence contractor. I am also a partner in
a company which manufactures and sells
home fragrancing products.
Whilst on HMAS Brisbane in 2001, I met
my partner, Chris Andrews. We have been

together now for 11 years, and have two
amazing children, twins born through
surrogacy in India in 2010.
I was actively involved in campaigning for
the change in Defence Policy which saw the
Inter-Dependant Relationship Recognition
come into force, which meant that Chris
and I could get formal recognition of our
relationship. In my opinion, this was a
turning point for Defence.
I have amazing family support. My parents
moved from Queensland to WA to be our
day-time childcare and help out when
needed. My husband is amazing and, whilst
he is the serving member, he is also the
pillar of support whilst I am working.
Both my employer and Chris’s divisional
team have been supportive when needed,
and this is the reason I feel I need to be able
to help other people in the wider Defence
Family to get the support that they need.

DHA, TOLL, DCO and the DRHM (Defence
Relocations and Housing Manager), as well
as local Commanders on a regular basis
to represent the views of Defence Families,

your family.

Department and

The Submarine Personal Department is the
Administrative authority for familygrams.
Nominated persons, as listed by the member,
shall be the authors and receivers of the
familygrams. Familygrams are a way of
sending short messages to your loved ones
whilst they are onboard a submarine.

Coordination Centre
The National Welfare Coordination centre
was established to provide a 24-hour point
of contact and information service for families
of personnel deployed or in support of
operations and designated exercises.

Defence Families Australia
Defence Families of Australia (DFA) is a group
formed to represent the views of Defence
families. Its aim is to improve the quality of life
for Defence families by providing a recognised
forum for their views and by reporting, making
recommendations and influencing policy that
directly affects families.
Defence Family Matters
Defence Family Matters (DFM) news magazine
sent to all permanent ADF personnel or
those on Continuous Fulltime Service who
have one or more dependants. It is sent out
three times a year and it is also available
as a free subscription to interested parties.
DFM provides ADF families with a reliable
information source relating to matters that
directly affect them such as information on pay
and allowance changes, support mechanisms
for families and partners, housing, and advice
and tips on dealing with posting issues. It also
provides community support information from
not for profit community focused groups.
Defence Special
Needs Support Group
The Defence Special Needs Support Group
is the only Australian charity dedicated to
providing support, information and assistance
to Australian Defence Force families who have
someone with special needs.
Defence Housing Australia
Defence Housing Australia (DHA) was
established in 1987 to provide housing for
members of the Australian Defence Force and
their families.

and members of Submarine Training and
System Centre (STSC), HMAS Stirling,WA.
The lateral entry program (LEP) is aimed at
the recruitment of personnel, with previous
military experience, for full time service
within the Royal Australian Navy. This
procedure applies to personnel who have
served, or are currently serving, with other
services of the Australian Defence Force,
other Commonwealth forces, or any other
approved foreign military forces.
