The Gulag Archipelago by: Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn
he Gulag Archipelago: An Experiment in Literary Investigation
Tis a three-volume, non-fiction text written between 1958 and
1968 by Russian writer and historian Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn. It
was first published in 1973, followed by an English translation the
following year. It covers life in what is often known as the Gulag,
the Communist Soviet forced labour camp system, through a
narrative constructed from various sources including reports, interviews,
statements, diaries, legal documents, and Solzhenitsyn’s
own experience as a Gulag prisoner. In Russian, the term GULAG
(ГУЛАГ) is an acronym for Main Directorate of Camps.
Following its publication, the book initially circulated in samizdat
underground publication in the Soviet Union until its appearance
in the literary journal Novy Mir in 1989, in which a third of the work
was published in three issues. Since the dissolution of the Soviet
Union, The Gulag Archipelago has been officially published in
Russia.
COA Machining Program Makes 3D Face Shields for Hospital
Barco, NC - College of The Albemarle (COA) programs
continue to find innovative ways to help meet the needs
of community members serving in critical roles amid
COVID-19. This week, COA’s Computer Integrated
Machining program produced face shields for Sentara
Albemarle Medical Center using Additive Manufacturing
Technology.
along with sterilization instructions for reuse.
COA has the capacity to produce more shields as the
need arises. To learn more about Additive Manufacturing
Technology or the CNC machining program offered at
COA-Currituck, visit www.albemarle.edu/cim.
David Chambers, instructor/program coordinator for the
machining program at COA-Currituck, began looking into
3D printed visor designs upon hearing of the continued
shortage of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for
frontline health care workers in the college’s service area.
To produce a face shield visor that would be quick, efficient,
and have the ability to be easily sterilized for reuse,
a design created by 3DVerkstan was chosen.
Visors are printed three at a time using a Fusion3 F400-S
3D printer, made in Greensboro North Carolina, after
being “Sliced” using Simplify 3D software. Additive manufacturing
technology is taught as part of the machining
program. The printer runs unsupervised once the program
is started. The visors take a little over two hours to print
using PETG plastic filament, also made in the USA. Once
the visors are printed and cleaned, holes are punched in
the transparencies used for the face shields. To prevent
any damage from occurring to the visors and transparencies
during transport, the shields are assembled once they
have reached their destined end user. COA has created
a video tutorial to help those assembling the face shields,
showing the correct way to fit the visor and shield together,
Manage Symptoms of Anxiety with Therapeutic Massage
We all experience anxiety at different times in
our lives, but for some, it can be a debilitating
condition. People with anxiety disorders, those feelings
never go away. It can begin to interfere with work, relationships
with others, and even the ability to perform
necessary activities of daily living.
Massage is an excellent therapy in managing anxiety
proven to assist with two of the most significant symptoms
of anxiety, sleep disturbances and insomnia, and
pain from muscle tension.
Sleep is a critical function, and when we do not sleep
deep enough or long enough, we begin to lose our
ability to think straight and start to feel anxiety and
depression. Massage improves the ability to fall asleep
and the quality of sleep, therefore, reducing the overall
symptoms of anxiety.
Massage therapy acts to increase circulation and bring
fresh oxygen precious blood back to the tissues.
It is especially useful in reducing muscle tension and
pain. Massage has demonstrated post-exercise recovery
and helping to prevent soreness. The same benefit
seems to transfer to those with muscle tension from
chronic tension brought on by emotional upset.
When we achieve better sleep, our bodies and our
minds can repair and regenerate, and when we have a
reduction in pain from muscle tension, we can experience
an overall sense of calm and relaxation.
Health and Nutrition Strategies For
Cancer Survivors and Everybody Else
Warren Green is a 30 year member of the Institute of Food
Technology, A HAACP (hazard analysis critical control point)
Instructor with a Bachelors degree in Nutrition Science.
WHAT’S IN YOUR DIET?
assume that most of us are at least self-quarantined,
I so Covid-19 is going to be the subject again. I’ve
always been interested in virus’s and how they work.
My background in food safety provided me with training
with the CDC in foodborne, airborne, and vectorborne
disease and how they are transmitted.
Since viruses, and how they are transmitted are defined
everywhere, I won’t be redundant.
Since the only thing protecting you from Covid-19 or
any of the billions of virus’s in the universe, is your immune
system, Over the years I’ve identified substances
that weaken the immune system. Time for a refresher:
-Arsenic (used in 90% of domestic poultry feed, to
control parasites),
-Glyphosate is the most used grain crop pesticide in the
world, and is identified in numerous lawsuits for carcinogenic
properties with adverse effects, particularly in the
Africa American population.
-Antibiotics, used sub-therapeutically in red meat to
fatten live stock for market. Connected to antibiotics is
rBGH* in diary cows to increase milk production which
causes inflammation. .
*rBGH is a particularly insidious, relatively new (1993)
synthetic hormone, that’s the subject of countless studies
as a cause of cancer.
We’re exposed to the aforementioned unlabeled
substances everyday, probably in every meal. Unless
it specifically states on the label that if it doesn’t have
these substances in the product, it probably does. Certified
Organic is a category of foods that our government
has created to give you an opportunity to avoid toxic,
immune compromising additives. .
Last month I did a couple of audio interviews, worked
on this column, and did a couple of pages of my memoirs.
That kept me kind of busy during my “stay in place”
time. At my advanced age (80yrs) multi-tasking is more
and more time consuming.
One of the interviews was Facebook live, with my favorite
cancer advocacy group “It’s in the Genes, LLC”.
It included call in Q & A’s, my favorite form of getting
the word out. Search Vicki Walton’s “Seasoned Sisters
Speak” for a replay. We covered a lot of subjects and
we supplemented them with additional written details.
Finally, clean, wholesome food is essential to a strong
immune system. My mantra has been food is medicine.
Apparently, that food has to be organic and available
to the population most at risk. The best way to do it is
through small acreage organic farming. All churches in
federally designated food deserts should have a victory
garden and or food pantry as part of their 501c3 charter.
Public housing development zoning should require
a food bank or provisions in its architecture planning.
If you plan public housing without access to basic food
requirements, you’ve planned a food desert.
FOOD IS MEDICINE.
Covid-19 By: Warren Green
To begin, I’ll introduce myself and my background and why I can
talk about this stuff. I spent a career in food safety primarily as
Supervisory Food Technologist in the USDA FSIS ( Food Safety
Inspection Service). Prior to my service with the USDA, I was the
IIC (Inspector-in-Charge) in the NY State Department of Agriculture.
I’m currently a Health and Nutrition columnist for the Albemarle
Tradewinds Magazine. My column is based on evidence-based studies
and abstracts, federal register press releases and peer reviewed
data.
That said: I felt the need to connect the dots from my column and
Facebook posts. A whole lot of things have surfaced in the last couple
of months, that came out in my research. I mentioned a quote in my
last column that I’ll repeat. The subject of the article was about antibiotic
in poultry and how it weakened the immune system. “We now
have the phenomena of antibiotic resistance as a result of antibiotic
overuse. What do you do if an exotic organism such as MERS enters
the country? What does the Healthcare/Medical community have in its
arsenal to address a potential pandemic/epidemic if antibiotics are not
effective”.
In the year 2000 then President, George Bush appointed my ex-boss,
the late Margaret O’K. Glavin FDA’ s associate commissioner in the
Office of Counterterrorism Policy and Planning.
Her duties included Medical Countermeasures (MCM ‘s ). MCM ‘s
can be used to diagnose, prevent, protect or treat conditions including
but not limited to biological, radiological, nuclear threats and
EMERGING INFECTIOUS DISEASES.
MCM’ s include: Biologic products, antibiotics, drugs ( antimicrobial,
or antiviral drugs).
Devices: PPE’ s, Diagnostic test to identify treat agents.
So, the infrastructure for infectious diseases has been in place for at
least 20 years. The FDA through MCM’ s is the agency responsible
for PPE’ s and diagnostic test. Clearly someone dropped the ball.
Damage control is poor planning.
Many communities around the world are analyzing sewage in water
treatment systems to determine the amount of Covid-19 in waste. The
data that’s generated will identify where the outbreaks are and who
to test. Every water treatment/sanitation district should be required to
test for infectious disease.
N o r t h e a s t e r n
SPCA
North Carolina, Inc.
Many shelters have been actively advocating adoptions
and foster programs. The reason is two-fold:
it helps to reduce overcrowding and it provides much
needed companionship to our community as well as
homes for the animals in the shelter. The good news
is that it is working beyond our wildest dreams! It has
always been well-founded that having a companion
animal reduces stress while providing their owners with
longer, healthier and happier lives. Our animals are
ready and willing to test that theory!
In this time of uncertainty, we are looking to pets for
many reasons: reduce stress and boredom, the need
to exercise, a companion for the children or simply to
have a loving and calm presence while we Shelter-in-
Place. Whatever the reasons, we are thrilled to see that
our community is helping the shelter and its animals by
providing their families with four-legged, big hearted,
cuddly reasons to get up in the morning.
Throughout this Self Distancing, our shelter in Elizabeth
City has continued to adopt and foster, while watching
our in-house numbers decrease to a manageable
amount. If you view our Facebook page, SPCA of
Northeastern NC, you will see the posts of our happy
animals with their adopted or foster families.
When isolation reduces our much needed contact with
friends and family, having a companion animal at home
helps to fill the long hours, provides a warm body in the
house while pushing us to make changes in our lives:
like walking the dog! Having a cat or dog also provides
a sense of security and purpose.
By: Kim Parrish, Board of Directors,
SPCA of Northeastern NC
It has been suggested that we should use this time to
develop new interests, take up a hobby or complete
unfinished projects. More importantly, we should fill
this time with ventures that will improve us; body and
soul. What better way achieve this goal than fostering
or adopting a companions animal? One that has been
discarded for no other reason than inconvenience or
a loving dog who was driven 10 miles from home and
dumped. A kitty cat whose family left her behind. What
better way to nurture your soul than to provide a loving
home for a companion animal?
Having an animal teaches young and old alike the
importance of compassion and responsibility. It also
teaches us that love is unconditional and friendship is
an arms length away.
Anyone Can Get the Blues
by: Coy Domecq
The arrival of bluebirds is one signal of the start of
spring. Followed closely after our feathered friends
is the appearance of another colorful item heralding the
confirmation of warmer weather, the fruiting of blueberry
bushes. North American native tribes have long used
blueberries as a versatile food, to make pemmican (a
dried meat and fruit preparation with a long shelf life),
as a fortifying tea and as a cough syrup. The “low-bush”
or “rabbit eye” variety is one type of many wild blueberry
plants native to North America that are most common
in the local forage arena. In North Carolina, these low
bush blueberries can be found from east to west. The
high bush variety is the typical cultivated type. While
not as abundant producers of berries as their taller
brethren, the low bush yields a more nutritious fruit.
Comparative component analyses of the low bush
berries demonstrate an increased offering of antioxidants,
anthocyanins, fiber, and manganese. In addition,
the low bush berry variety is regarded as having more
intense coloration and flavor. It is thought that the
consumption of blueberries aids in cognitive function,
cardiovascular health, and is an important tool in weight
management. Blueberries can be found in the wild from
chdomecq@hotmail.com
May through late summer depending upon the plant
variety and its location both in geography and elevation
with the earliest developers in the Piedmont sand hills
and the later harvest in the western part of the state.
Regardless of your past musical abilities, you too can
soon be pickin’ the blues.
JIM KAIGHN INSURANCE AGENCY- HOME OF THE “INSURANCE DOCTOR”
Estate Conservation vs. Estate Creation
The basic definition of ESTATE is the value of all property
a person has, minus any liabilities= Net Worth or
Estate!! Usually, you hear of an Estate when a person dies
and all their possessions are looked at either by the courts
to be dispersed either by a will or by the court itself if a
person did not leave a will..All property in this manner goes
through PROBATE, where the court system figures out where
property goes.. Some property that does not go through the
court system and automatically distributed is a home that
the people live in AUTOMATICALLY goes to the surviving
spouse.. The most common property that does not go through
PROBATE, or the court system is LIFE INSURANCE!! This
is the topic of this article..It does not matter what your age is,
from 18 to 100+, all Life Insurance money (Proceeds) goes
to the beneficiary as stated in the contract that the insured
person named-- And this naming can not be challenged
in court, unlike a will which can be contested ( challenged
by some family member..) When a life insurance policy is
bought, TWO ESTATE are set up automatically.. One, the
insureds worth just increased by the amount of the life policy..
Even though the insured will never get to use this value, his
personal estate has grown by the amount of the policy and
may have ESTATE PROBLEMS later after their death,,The
SECOND estate set up is for the beneficiary.. But this value of
the estate for the beneficiary will not come into being, until the
insured dies..
Jakes Outdoor Adventures
Here on the Outer Banks, we are still waiting for the
2020 fishing season to get underway because of
the effects of the COVID-19 virus. The fish are starting
to migrate back with water temperatures starting to rise.
Here on the Marauder we are ready to target Cobia as
they make their way back up the coast. The Cobia fishery
is very important to NC and VA because of its economic
impact to Dare County and the towns along the Chesapeake
Bay in Virginia. Several years ago, this fishery
was under attack from federal agencies but a grassroots
effort by a host of Cobia fishermen saved the fishery from
being closed for that year. The fight continues and if it
were not for a few dedicated anglers who sacrificed their
time and money to travel up and down the coast to attend
and make public comments, we would be facing extreme
regulatory restrictions.
This brings me to the point that on the OBX and the
Hampton Roads areas, we have numerous anglers clubs
that were formed to promote fishing and share experiences
in fishing. What we lack; however, is a dedicated
fishing organization in the state of NC that truly represents
Recreational Anglers and to lobby for this user
group. What the Recreational Charter Industry and the
Recreational Anglers need is an organization to be a
watchdog in the legislature in Raleigh, as well as South
Atlantic Marine Fisheries and NOAA meetings to make
sure we are truly being represented. I know many of you
reading this now are saying, “I want to fish and not have
to deal with politics.” This really doesn’t mean you have
to spend a great deal of time accomplishing this. It may
be as simple as writing a letter or email to your elected
officials. It may mean you need to attend a meeting and
make a public comment. If we take a laissez faire attitude
as an angling group and don’t fight for our rights to open
access to these fisheries based on sound science, then
So, one estate grows the value of the insured’s worth and
second the value of POTENTIAL ESTATE is set for the beneficiary,
even though they might get the value of the policy
one week or 60+ years later, when the insured dies. Now, if
someone is already very wealthy, they may buy “tons” of extra
life insurance to protect the value of ALL THEY PROPERTY,
MAYBE MILLIONS OF DOLLARS OF VALUE and they want
their property to go to certain people, not the government selling
their property at an auction for penny’s on the dollar.. This
way the family LOSES much value.. So, the life insurance
is used to settle the estate tax problem, the surviving family
gets the full value of the property .. Now, very few people
are in the category, most of us only have a small amount of
goods or property to pass on, so they use the life insurance
to CREATE an estate for their survivors.. Life insurance is a
unique money tool that can do so much for so many people
for so little money.. For more info on this topic, you can call
me at 252 202 5983 or 252 335 5983 or e-mail me at “insdr
@roadrunner.com”
THOUGHT OF THE MONTH--Be careful of all the words you
say and keep them nice and sweet. You never know from day
to day which ones you will have to eat!! Until l next month--
Happy Trails
regulatory agencies and special interest groups will push
through their own agendas.
There is no better example of fisheries inequality than
the NC Marine FIsheries Board. Here in Dare County,
we sell more recreational licenses than any other county
in the state. Add to that a large recreational charter boat
fleet, five fishing piers and miles and miles of beaches
for surf fishing. However on the NCDMF Board which
has three recreational seats, none of them is from Dare
County! All three seats are filled by recreational fishermen
who reside in Kinston, Atlantic Beach and Wilmington.
Not only is Dare County not being represented,
but the board recently eliminated Dare County as a
board meeting site. This means if we want to give public
comments and attend these meetings, we will have to
take the trek to southeastern NC. This is totally unfair,
and we are being geographically discriminated against
by not having representation from our area. You can rest
assured the board is truly looking out for the stakeholders
in the Morehead City and Wilmington areas, but not ours.
The Governor and the Legislature needs to step in and
make these seats not only industry and science designated,
but also geographical so our county is truly being
represented.
Dear Dr. Crime: Do we still have “witches” like in the
past? Preacher
Dear Preacher: Yes, and it is more open now than
in the past. Charisma reported that a study by Trinity
College found a growth of Americans calling themselves
“Wiccans” went from 8,000 in 1990 to 340,000 in 2008. A
study by Pew Research foundation in 2014 found 0.4%
of Americans were Pagan or Wiccan. In your role in the
Church you may influence this growth. Go to witchcraft.
charismamag.com and or churchofsatan.com for more
information. I hope this will be discussed again, for reasons
that will be apparent as you review it.
Dear Dr. Crime: My buddy was the victim of a robbery
and was shot. We still have the bullet that stayed in his
back. Can the cops tell if the bullet came from a specific
gun? I think I know who the robber is. I will go to
the cops with the bullet if they can use it. What do I do.
Drinking Buddy
Dear Buddy: Go at once to the police with the bullet and
tell them what you know. Yes, they can use the bullet,
more so than in the past. Real advances are being made
by scientists. They are developing ways to compare the
marks on a fired bullet with the inside of a gun barrel in
improved ways.
Dear Dr. Crime: I just saw my medical records and was
shocked at the personal information they contained,
Should I be worried that crooks might get that? I hear a
lot more now than in the past about crooks pretending
to be me and using my bank account. Can you tell me if
this is something that should worry me? Bloody Mary
Hastiness and superficiality are the psychic
diseases of the 20th century, and more than
anywhere else this disease is reflected in the
press.
-Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn
Dear Mary: I will drink to that (LOL). Joking aside, the
many aspects of identity crime are very real and you (and
all of us) must take precautions. October is National Cyber
Security Awareness Month,, so the National Criminal
Justice Reference Service will provide information about
that. We must ALL review best practices in protecting
personal information online . I encourage our public-school
leaders to develop courses for the kids about
how to best ensure that we are safe online. Bottom Line
Personal reported there were 233 major breaches of our
medical records in 2017. Do not put your social security
number on those forms, and guard that number as best
you can! To check further, go to OCRPortal.hhs.gov/ocr/
breach to see if you are ok. Regarding the government
payments see www/irs/gov/coronavirus/economic-impact-payments.
Dear Dr. Crime: Can Artificial Intelligence (AI) help with
our current economic mess? Can the robots help the
cops? What on earth is coming with the AI advances?
Machine Lover .
Dear Lover: Your question opens up such a massive
issue I must first advise you to follow the topic in the
scientific journals. AI, and smart robots, are expanding
in use and applications daily. The NCJRS has a report
(#102603 ) on the use of AI in the fight against terrorists.
Robots are developing the ability to feel pain as
do humans. And of major interest for criminologists is a
report in Science News of research showing AI robots do
better in crime prediction, recidivism, than our probation
officers and judges!!
We are in a unique situation, and I have avoided questions
about the virus and crime. I welcome comments
regarding our future and present social condition.
Woe to that nation whose literature is
Chowanoke History
by Duvonya Chavis
Treaties are contracts made between governing nations.
British colonies began to enter into contracts
with Indian governments, decades before the United
States was formed. After the US was formed, over 500
treaties were made with Indian nations. Often treaties
were enacted by the US either unilaterally without
consent of the governing Indian nation or by employing
deception. Last month, the Treaty of Hopewell and the
Treaty of Holston, treaties negotiated between the US
government and the Cherokee Nation, were discussed.
Breaking these treaties to enact the Treaty of Echota
changed the landscape of how the US government
interacted with Indian Nations for decades to come. Yet,
a closer look at why the Treaty of Echota was made
reveals underlying fears that the US government had
of their continued governance. These fears resulted in
actions that severely impacted Indian tribes negatively
for years, where many tribes continue to feel its impact
to the present day.
The Cherokee Nation, a progressive nation whose
members had developed a syllabary, began to print a
national weekly newsletter called the Cherokee Phoenix
in 1828. The newsletter was published in both Cherokee
and English and included articles that covered
internal governing issues and Cherokee laws that had
been enacted over its territory. Social issues and other
political issues that Indian nations overall faced were
also included. However, publishing the 1827 Cherokee
Constitution angered and caused great alarm for both
US state and federal governments. Yet, the controversy
found in Article I of the Cherokee Constitution simply
concurred with the two Treaties and with the expressed
sovereignty of Indian nations in the US Constitution.
“The boundaries of this nation embracing the lands solemnly
guaranteed and reserved forever to the Cherokee
Nation by the treaties concluded with the United States
is as follows, and which shall forever hereafter remain
unalterably the same.
The sovereignty and jurisdiction of this Government
shall extend over the country within the boundaries
above described, and the lands therein is and shall
remain the common property of the nation.”
As a result, President John Quincy Adams expressed
the sentiments of many colonizers in his final message
to Congress in 1828 as he stated:
“When we have had the rare good fortune of teaching
them the arts of civilization and the doctrines of Christianity
we have unexpectedly found them forming in the
midst of ourselves communities claiming to be independent
of ours and rivals of sovereignty within the territories
of the members of our Union. This state of things
requires that a remedy should be provided- a remedy
which, while it shall do justice to those unfortunate
children of nature, may secure to the members of our
confederation their rights of sovereignty and soil.”
Fears expressed by other government leaders of a
possible return to Europe if colonizing efforts failed only
cemented a desire within them to remove Indians or
force them to assimilate. The remedy was to remove all
Indians west of the Mississippi. This fear had previously
propelled efforts to assimilate remnant tribes in the East.
It was also the motivating fear that broke up the ownership
of communal land held in fee simple by remnant
Chowanoke Indians in the 1820’s.
You only have power over people so
long as you don’t take everything away
from them. But when you’ve robbed a
man of everything, he’s no longer in your
power - he’s free again.
descendant, is President of
non-profit organization whose
mission is to help American
Remembering Paris
By Claude Milot
France is having a tough time battling the Coronavirus
and is facing economic devastation as a result.
Maybe because I’m biased in favor of the land of my ancestors,
I mostly recall the wonderful people I met on my
travels through France. Here is one such recollection.
Parisians have a reputation for rudeness. I think it’s a
bad rap. I spent three weeks in Paris not long ago, and
the only rudeness I saw was by three Somalians who
cursed an attendant as they jumped the metro turnstiles.
As for my wife and me, we experienced nothing but
courtesy and friendliness on the metro, especially from
the young people who insisted on giving up their seats to
us old folks.
In fact, people went out of their way to be helpful. I
have several examples, but here are just two. One day
my wife and I decided to go by train to Fontainebleau,
the famous chateau about 50 miles outside of Paris.
But we couldn’t figure out how to buy a ticket—there
are no ticket sellers in railroad stations, only automated
machines with hard-to-follow instructions. When we
explained our dilemma at the Information Office, a man
who had overheard us led us clear across the station to
the right machine, got us the tickets, and led us to the
platform where our train awaited. When he learned that
we were Americans, he expressed deep sympathy for
the loss of life caused by a terrorist attack in New York.
Nice man.
The second story is about two Frenchwomen—I call
them my angels—who came to my aid when I tripped
and fell on the Quay d’Anjou and banged my head
against a stone wall. I wasn’t seriously hurt, but they
knelt by me and stayed with me until they were sure
I was OK. After my wife checked for blood and didn’t
find any, I got back on my feet with the help of my two
angels. I thanked them and tried to make light of the
incident, saying to them—in my best French—that if I
hadn’t fallen, I would never have had the opportunity of
meeting two such beautiful ladies. They smiled. And my
wife and I went on our way.
Art in the Albemarle Area
Welcome to May everyone. Normally this month
would be a time of art shows, craft shows, and
just strolling through the new blooms of spring. But let’s
face it …. normal is not for us now, even the new “normal”
may be different. But as artists we can still sketch,
paint, draw, and create.
What have you been doing with your artwork over this
time of social distancing? Have you been out discovering
new opportunities to paint? Have you tried any new
or different avenues or mediums to paint with? Have
you tried or attempted to just do something different? I
can offer a few suggestions:
1. Try painting with watercolors, its easy to clean
up, easy to use, the materials needed are few and the
results are surprising.
2. Use acrylics, if you have them at hand. They are
just a little bit thiscker than the watercolors and can be
corrected if you think your painting isn’t what you liked,
although if it came from your heart there aren’t any
mistakes.
3. Try paper cutting art... it is an amazing art medium.
4. Try some string art techniques, you will be surprised
at what you can create.
5. How about attempting to make some little woods
warriors, using the materials found in your own yards.
6. Make pop-up cards for your family or friends.
7. Make greeting cards... many people could use a
friendly reminder of how much they mean at this time.
8. Don’t forget about crayons or chalk. Make your
own picture or simply use one of the various pictures
by: Talmage Dunn
that you can color on.
9. Use colored pencils or pens.
Although these are just suggestions or ideas. There
area plethora of opportunities for you to create art and
bring cheer to those in your community. If you have
no idea of how to attempt or start these techniques...
use the internet.. there are hundreds of ideas, lessons,
and directions on creating. You just have to look and
attempt them. You will surprise yourself at what you
can do!!!
Send some of these cards, paintings and crafts to a
high school senior near you! Let them know that you
are rooting for them and understand that things, while
not the same, holds a great future for them.
Orthodox Christianity by Fr Jonathan Tobias, MDiv, MSEd
Orthodox Mother’s Day
One of the most important days of the year is Mother’s
Day, which is the second Sunday of May (this year,
May 10th). It is very much so a religious holiday, with many
churches honoring the event. There will be musical offerings
for the day, along with special sermons. Frequently, the children
will line up for a tender song. Flowers are prominent, to
be sure.
While some Orthodox churches will offer special prayers on
May 10th, the fact remains that there is no Mother’s Day on
the church calendar. The Orthodox Church Year is filled on
every Sunday with celebrations and remembrances of various
events in the life of Jesus Christ. For that matter, every
single day is a remembrance of at least three or four saints
of the church’s two thousand year history.
But there is no single day that is called “Mother’s Day.”
There is a simple reason for that. Every day is Mother’s Day
in the Orthodox Church.
I’m not being trite here. Every single Sunday morning
Liturgy, there is a special remembrance of the Mother of
God, the Virgin Mary. Of all the saints who are portrayed on
the many icons inside an Orthodox Church, the Virgin Mary
-- whom we call the “Theotokos,” i.e., the “Birthgiver of God”
-- is by far the most prominent saint.
We are not at all shy about calling her “Mother of God,” as
this title is necessary in the Christian faith, since she did in
fact bear Jesus Christ, Who is both Man and God, even as
an infant, even while still in His mother’s womb.
Our icons and hymns celebrate the very real Motherhood of
Mary. One is struck with so many portrayals of the warmth,
the tenderness of her devotion to her Son, Who is at the
same time her God.
Despite the fact that Orthodox clergy are male, the culture
and spirituality of Orthodoxy is essentially female. The
entire human race is represented by the Virgin Mary. She is,
without question, the leader of Christianity -- not the Apostle
Peter or any of the Apostles … not any bishop or patriarch
… not any elected officer.
We recognize her as the Mother of the Church, just as Jesus
on the Cross said to the Apostle John, “Behold, your mother.”
The Orthodox Church understands this to mean that she
is just that, our spiritual Mother. She is the very best “prayer
warrior” of all time, who best fulfills the promise in the Book
of James: “The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man
(or woman) availeth much.”
The Virgin Mary, as the Mother of God, was the first Christian
to receive Jesus Christ as her Lord and Saviour, and
she is the highest example of Christian living.
After all, Mary was the very best of all gifts that humanity
-- indeed all Creation -- could ever give to God in the
Incarnation of His Son. It was humanity that welcomed the
Creator to His Creation, and that entire humanity for all time
was represented in one person, one woman the Virgin Mary,
Mother of God.
The Virgin Mary is the human height of Christianity, and indeed
all humanity. She is the best “prayer partner” possible,
the greatest of all “faith that moves mountains.”
And most importantly for the second Sunday of May, she is
the patron saint of all mothers, who prays best for all moms
-- those who give the most, who are patient the most, and
who wait the most for their children to come home.
Museum of the Albemarle
2020 Marks 500 Years of Spanish Exploration
By Wanda Lassiter, Curator, Museum of the Albemarle
2020 marks the 500th anniversary of the first Spanish
exploration of coastal North Carolina. Many countries
were vying for the southeastern part of this “New World.”
In 1520, Pedro de Quexoia led an expedition from Santo
Domingo which landed him onto the coast of what is now
Currituck County. Very little information remains of his
venture, however, one can only speculate that on their
voyage from Europe to South America, coastal Carolina
would leave an impression on them.
Other European explorations soon followed. Lucas
Vasquez de Ayllon, on behalf of a charter issued by King
Charles I of Spain, backed explorations including those
off the coasts of the Carolinas in 1521. In 1524 Giovanni
da Verrazzano, a Florentine navigator in the service of
France, explored the coastline from the Cape Fear area
upward toward present day Kitty Hawk. Many historians
believe that his 1852 published account influenced other
countries including England to continue exploration into
this “New World.”
Archival documents dating from 1753 held in Governor’s
Council records at the State Archives of North Carolina
relate to Spanish privateers in Brunswick Town.
These explorations left lasting effects on future explorations.
Today, the Corolla Wildlife Horse Fund relays
that, “Although the Ocracoke strain of Spanish mustang
cannot be directly traced to a single breeder, importer, or
sire, certain physiological features of present day horses,
and historical data lead strongly to the conclusion that the
ancestors of these horses were escapees from Spanish
stock brought to the Outer Banks of North Carolina in the
first part of the 16th century.”
The Museum of the Albemarle is located at 501 S. Water
Street, Elizabeth City, NC. (252) 335-1453. Hours
are Monday through Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Closed Sundays and State Holidays. Serving Bertie,
Camden, Chowan, Currituck, Dare, Gates, Hertford,
Hyde, Northampton, Pasquotank, Perquimans, Tyrrell,
and Washington Counties, the museum is the northeast
regional history museum of the North Carolina
Division of State History Museums within the N.C. Department
of Cultural Resources, the state agency with
the mission to enrich lives and communities and the
vision to harness the state’s cultural resources to build
North Carolina’s social, cultural and economic future.
Hernado de Soto explored North Carolina’s Appalachian
region during his 1539-1542 expeditions. Juan Pardo led
explorations around the Catawba Valley and the North
Carolina and Tennessee Mountains in the late 1560s.
Archaeological excavations at the 18th century port of
Brunswick Town on the Cape Fear River uncovered Iberian
olive jars, vessels used for shipping by the Spanish.
Last month, I spoke about the effects that the
closure was having on the Elizabeth City affiliate’s
financial situation. Many people have said
the governor’s order needs to be lifted so we
can re-open. I need to emphasize that our closure
was the result of decisions made in Atlanta
by Habitat for Humanity International’s (HFHI)
leadership. That directive shut our store’s doors
and stopped house construction activities.
We do not receive any funding from HFHI. Each
affiliate is financially independent. We rely on
store revenues and homeowner payments to
support our operations. Our homeowners have
experienced the same financial hardships as
others in the country and we are working with
them on their payment plans.
cover those costs, we applied for the SBA PPP
program and recently received word that we will
receive funding through that program.
The PPP loan was requested to cover salaries,
help with building projects. We have a home
right now waiting for approval from Atlanta to
North Carolina Bow Hunters Association
by: Talmage Dunn
Welcome to the ending of turkry season. By the
time you read this article Spring Gobbler Season
will be over. I hope you had a chance to draw your
bow back on a nice Tom. Turkey hunting is one of the
seasons that truly lends itself to the social distancing
philosophy that is in place in our country now.
Big game seasons are over, small game season is
predominately over ….what is a bowhunter to do ?
Now is the time to go bow fishing!! It is awesome to
take a fish with an arrow. But, it is not an easy task.
Remember light refracts in water. You have to aim
below a fish in order to achieve success when fishing
with the bow and arrow. There are 3-D practice targets
for bow fishing... but I tend to practice on the cheaper
side of my wallet. I use 2-liter bottles... sink the just
below the surface with some lead weights and practice
shooting with my fishing arrows. It saves wear-and-tear
on my arrows and doesn’t hurt my wallet. Just be sure
of the type of “fish” you can harvest with your bow.
Check your regulations. This is another outdoor activity
that meets the requirements of social distancing.
As printed in the NCWRC upddate there is a note
from the Wildlife Commission Director as he urges
compliance with COVID-19 restrictions. Here is the
notice:
“Across North Carolina, residents are adapting
to practicing social distancing and avoiding mass
gatherings, including while using Wildlife Commission
game lands, boat ramps, public fishing areas and other
areas. Agency Director Gordon Myers urges residents
to continue to comply with social distancing requirements
when using Commission related outdoor areas,
particularly after the U.S. Forest Service announced it
was closing specific roads, trails access, recreational
areas and camping in Pisgah National Forest. These
closures may result in people visiting other nearby
game lands, which could lead to overcrowding. It is
paramount that people visiting agency access areas
continue to follow social distancing and mass gathering
requirements.” ( as printed the North Carolina Wildlife
A
Wave
new book of poetry, “Journey of a No Tail Bear,” will be
available to the public by the end of May 2020. The Frisco
Native American Museum & Natural History Center will publish
a small collection of poetry written by Bear Plummer. The book
opens with a poem penned in 2020
“LETTER TO MY JAILER”
I stand here in my self-imposed prison.
Walls not made of brick or mortar,
Bars not made of steel.
Instead, walls made from low self-esteem,
Anger, depression and hate.
And bars made of no forgiveness within my heart.
I search for a key to set my spirit free.
A key not made of gold, silver or brass
But a key made of self-esteem, love,
happiness and forgiveness
I can see the key.
It is within my grasp.
I still have one last thing, one last task,
Perhaps the hardest one of all:
How do I find forgiveness for the things
I’ve done to me?
It's not just another wave,
it's an experience.
FRISCO NATIVE AMERICAN MUSEUM PUBLISHES NEW BOOK
Growing up in the early 1950’s, Bear learned almost nothing
about his Native heritage from family. It was a time when the
US census did not even acknowledge Native Americans, and
it was not until Bear was an adult that he began to uncover his
family’s background. The volume includes poems spanning
more than twenty years and reflects a view of life from a Native
American veteran who came to understand and appreciate his
family’s roots. Although a small collection, the poems are both
powerful and poignant.
For May, Try Shrimp Etouffée
Shrimp - quite the versatile little crustacean. One can
boil it, steam it, bake it, grill it, fry it, sauté it. Or one can
smother it, which is what etouffée means. Shrimp etouffée
is gastronomy rooted in the history of New Orleans. It’s
a seafood dish smothered in vegetables, in this case, the
“Holy Trinity” of onion, celery, and bell pepper, along with a
tomato-based sauce, resulting in a spicy and rich, aromatic,
stew-like preparation served atop a bed of rice.
Now, I’m not getting into the Cajun vs Creole aspects of this
dish or its original association with crawfish. I’m just making
something good to eat with Louisiana flare using what I have
on hand. (And I always have shrimp on hand.) It’s simply my
version of a classic dish. In addition, you’ll learn two valuable
culinary techniques along the way – how to make a roux and
how to make shrimp stock.
Rosie’s Shrimp Etouffée
10-12 oz. medium-sized shrimp, shelled and
de-tracted (Save shells for stock!) You can use
more, but when I freeze my shrimp, they’re
usually packed in 10 ounce units. And I say
de-tracted, not de-veined, since that black line
going down the back of the shrimp is the digestive
tract, not a vein.
Spice mixture for shrimp:
½ tsp kosher salt
½ tsp ground pepper
¼ tsp cayenne
¼ tsp granulated garlic
¼ tsp onion powder
¼ tsp thyme
¼ tsp oregano
¼ tsp paprika
Mix all spices and toss with shrimp. It’s OK if
you’re missing a spice or two here. My recipes
aren’t etched in stone.
3 TB unsalted butter
1 TB oil
¼ cup flour
2 stalks celery, chopped
1 bell pepper, chopped
1 medium onion, chopped
1 cup + shrimp stock (recipe ahead)
1 10-oz. can diced tomatoes with chiles
1 TB Lea & Perrins Worcestershire sauce
It's not just another wave,
By Rosie Hawthorne
it's an experience.
For the stock:
When you peel your shrimp, place shells in a
medium stock pot. Add in a coarsely chopped
carrot, chopped celery with leaves, chopped
onion with skins, a few smashed garlic cloves
with peel, and a couple bay leaves. Cover with
water. I used a little over a quart. Add in about
a teaspoon kosher salt. Bring to a boil, reduce
heat, and let bare-simmer for about 40 minutes.
Strain out liquid and discard solids. You’ll have
a little over 2 cups of stock.
For shrimp etouffée:
In medium pot, heat butter and oil over medium
heat until butter is sizzling. Add in flour and
cook, stirring, about 8 minutes, until mixture
turns dark blond. This is officially a roux.
Add in celery, pepper, and onion and cook,
stirring, 2 minutes.
Slowly pour in shrimp stock, stirring, letting
mixture thicken, about 5 minutes.
Add in can of tomatoes and Worcestershire
sauce.
Reduce heat to low, add in shrimp, and let cook
until shrimp are just done, 3 - 4 minutes.
Serve on a bed of white rice and top with
chopped green onions, parsley, and optional
shakes of Texas Pete hot sauce.

The coming ice age
By John Silveira
Reprinted with permissions from Backwoods Home Magazine Issue #86 • March/April, 2004
As little as 30 years ago the talk wasn’t about global
warming, it was about an imminent ice age. Is an ice
age likely? Even possible? Consider this: There have been
more than 20 glacial advances, or ice ages, in just the last
two million years. And we know from geological evidence
that each glaciation lasted anywhere from 20,000 to 100,000
years—no one knows why the disparity—separated by
warm periods that last some 10,000 to 15,000 years. What
we can be reasonably sure of is that we’re now in one of
the warm periods, and this one is already 13,000 years old.
Some scientists think it’s at an end and a new ice age is
about to begin.
No one really knows what causes ice ages. Theories
abound. They include perturbations in the earth’s orbit,
changes in ocean currents, the earth periodically passing
through galactic dust that obscures the sun, variations in the
sun’s energy output, changes in continental positions, uplift
of continental blocks, reduction of CO2 in the atmosphere,
etc. Evidence or experiment may eventually resolve which of
the theories wins out, or it may turn out that a combination
of theories are true. It may even be that none of the current
theories proves satisfactory and some entirely new theory
ultimately explains their cause.
But what is pretty certain is how they take place. It was
once common wisdom to believe that the advent of an ice
age took place over centuries or even millennia, and that
they ended the same way. It was thought that the changes
were so slow that, if people were around to witness them,
each generation would hardly notice any change. If the next
glaciation were to come on slowly, and we recognized it as
the beginning of an ice age, maybe there would be time for
civilization to adjust: to begin food storage, to develop crop
hybrids that will endure shorter growing seasons, to move
populations, factories, and technology—the core of our civilization—into
southern climates, etc.
But we now have evidence that ice ages come on with an
abruptness that will catch us by total surprise. Physical evidence
indicates that when the last ice age started, the British
Isles went from a temperate climate to being completely
covered with glaciers hundreds of feet thick in just 20 years.
Do scientists think it’ll happen that way again? Yes. And if
the next ice age starts here’s how it may occur: At first we
wouldn’t even realize it, so the first few years we’d feel we
were just having one or two bad winters. But after a few
years rivers will freeze all-year-round, snow from the previous
years won’t completely melt, glaciers will begin to form,
and some of what is currently now the world’s most fertile
ground will become unfarmable.
Countries bordering on both sides of the Atlantic will change
radically as a result of changes in the Gulf Stream, and Europe,
which today is almost 20 degrees warmer than other
parts of the world at the same latitude, will become as cold
and dry as Siberia. The Sahara may again become forested
while the Amazon basin becomes a desert. Florida may also
become a desert, as it was in a previous ice age.
At the same time, if the climate changes enough to disturb
the monsoon season that fuels agriculture from Africa to
China, where over half the world’s six billion people now live,
hundreds of millions will starve when the climate abruptly
changes. There’s no way to prepare them for that.
Canadian and Russian wheat will fail completely. American
agriculture, on which much of the world depends, will be
scaled back by shorter growing seasons. Not only will we
not have enough food for export, we won’t be able to grow
enough to sustain even our own current population. And
jobs? Factories will close, service businesses will disappear,
stocked supermarkets will become a thing of the past. Get
ready for your standard of living to drop like a rock while you
and your kin go hungry.
How far will the ice fields extend? In North America they will
most likely reach as far south as present day Chicago. But
they may go further. And this isn’t going to be some picture
postcard winter landscape. At the height of the last ice age,
the ice fields covering much of North America were up to
two miles thick. So, expect the great northern cities, such
as New York, Boston, Detroit, Toronto, Montreal, etc., to be
swept away before advancing glaciers. In the meantime, sea
levels will drop and more of the continental shelves will be
exposed. You’ll be able to walk from Siberia to Alaska, from
California to the Channel Islands, from Britain to France,
from Australia to New Guinea.
But when is this really all likely to happen? Because no one
knows what causes ice ages, there’s no way to forecast
when the next one will start, how bad it will be, or what effect
the (allegedly man-made) global warming taking place today
will have on it. We can’t tell whether it will be less severe
than the last one, when the ice sheets only extended as far
south as Wisconsin, or as bad as some of the glaciations of
half a billion years ago when ice sheets formed all the way
to the equator. Although this latter scenario is unlikely, no
one can be sure. But if it does, kiss the human race goodbye.
What seems fairly certain is that we will go from the world
as it is today to full-blown glaciation in less than 20 years,
maybe in as little as four or five. And there is no way the
United States can adjust to and survive a climate change
this abrupt.
Can we stop it? We can’t even stop a single snow storm.
Imagine trying to stop an ice age that’s going to go on for
tens of thousands of years.
Of course God is endlessly
multi-dimensional so every religion
that exists on earth represents
some face, some side of God.
The Three Most Common Post-Shooting Errors
This article first appeared in the Network’s membership journal. Part 3
by Gila Hayes
Reprinted with permission from the Armed Citizens Legal Defense Network Inc.
Never Embellish
The third most common error is closely related to the second.
It is attempting to embellish the story of what happened to
make your self look better. “This is human nature,’ Massad exclaimed.
“Cops do it on the stand. Lawyers do it when they’re
on the stand instead of the podium. It’s something all of us
have to be alert to, and have to fight when we’re on the witness
stand.”
For illustration, he cited State of California v. Herman Kreutzer,
a case in which a citizen defended his daughter against her
abusive husband. The son-in-law came to the family home
claiming to have a gun inside a cast he wore on his arm. His
intimidating behavior, terrorizing the family, prompted Kreutzer
to pull out a gun and shoot the abuser, who cried out “I guess I
made a mistake,” then died. Kreutzer dumped the body, threw
his handgun in the ocean and quickly departed on an unscheduled
journey.
Later, when authorities found the body and questioned him, he
claimed, “I don’t know a thing about it.” Despite the justifiability
of his defense of his family, he is serving a life sentence for
murder, with no hope for parole.
“When humans have anything important on the table, human
nature turns us all into attorneys, maximizing what makes us
look good and minimizing what makes the other guy look bad,”
Massad explained.
While we may not be able to imagine ourselves in a situation
as extreme as Kreutzer’s, it is not that difficult to envision
giving verbal commands, then, for example, uncomfortable with
bad language used, deny making the statement. When witness
statements debunk your denial, your entire case falls under
suspicion.
When asked, Massad acknowledged that witness statements
may also be incorrect, citing the immense exaggeration surrounding
reports of John Dillinger’s shooting, or more recently
tremendous discrepancies between public belief and the actual
facts borne out on videotape of the Rodney King arrest. The
same thing happens in microcosm with private citizens, and
for most there is no videotape as proof. “A lie repeated often
enough is seen as the truth,” Massad warned. “The defendant
is not in a position to call a press conference and say, “here is
what actually happened.”
“We need to be able to articulate why we did what we did,
what we perceived, and we need to be able to explain why we
saw what others did not,” continued Massad. “As the intended
victim, we are the only one who was watching his hands.
Thus, the witnesses may miss the small pistol in the assailant’s
hands, while focused on the armed citizen’s larger gun.”
To armed citizens pondering these topics, the mental preparation
to face the aftermath appears daunting, but Massad is
convinced that the training carries people through.
“If you think about it, stating the active dynamic works in almost
any situation where it is a he said/she said kind of deal,” he
notes. He recalls the time when a motorist ran into the car
driven by his daughter, then 16. The other driver jumped out,
furious and blaming the teen-ager. When law enforcement arrived,
the teen immediately told the officer that she was driving
down the street when the other driver backed in front of her.
Stating that she was unable to avoid the collision, she volunteered
to sign a complaint against the other driver, and pointed
out witnesses who backed up her account, as well as the skid
marks where she had tried to stop.
If a new driver involved in a traffic accident can maintain the
presence of mind to make a proper statement to authorities,
Ayoob believes that all our training will carry through in more
serious situations.
“The Network grew out of the training community and has tremendous
roots there. It gives members access to discounted
training, with possible seminars in the future just for Network
members to allow them to tap into the distilled and concentrated
knowledge of the best and brightest in our field,” he avowed.
Massad derives tremendous satisfaction from the motivated
students who attend his training. Unlike the average cop, these
people are in class on their vacation time, paying tuition out of
their savings. “It is so important to them,” he commented. In addition,
these same armed citizens pay attention to the constant
need to update their knowledge. Owing to their motivation, their
ability in an emergency to use concepts they learned is above
par.
https://armedcitizensnetwork.org
legal aftermath
of self defense?
Northeast North Carolina Celebrates the “Spirit of Travel”
5 Albemarle communities Will Use 37th NTTW (May 3-9) to Look Ahead to Recovery
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Northeastern, NC (April 29, 2020) — National Travel and Tourism Week 2020 (NTTW), the annual
celebration of the contributions and accomplishments of the U.S. travel industry, will spotlight
resilience and hope in the face of the coronavirus pandemic with this year’s theme: the Spirit of
Travel. This 37th NTTW arrives at an opportune moment to unite the industry, celebrate its resilient
spirit and elevate the role it will play in America’s economic recovery.
“Through every hardship, I find myself in awe of the travel industry’s ability to join together, adapt,
and emerge stronger than before,” said U.S. Travel Association President and CEO Roger Dow. “This is
our toughest challenge yet, but what I’ve seen is that the spirit of travel has not been shattered.”
Five communities of the Albemarle including Pasquotank, Perquimans, Chowan, Camden, and
Currituck County, are coming together to celebrate the Spirit of Travel and the Spirit of the Albemarle
on social media, highlighting the region’s natural, cultural, and historic assets that have allowed
Northeast North Carolina to become a favorite destination. This is a great time for residents and
neighbors of the area to enjoy the many assets the Albemarle has to offer from the eyes of a visitor.
Tourism is the backbone of not only these 5 Albemarle area communities along our coast, but the
entire state of NC, and will continue to be for years to come. In these 5 counties, tourism employs
nearly 3,000 people and saves each resident of the 5 counties an average of $274 per year in taxes.
Solution on Page 34
Said Visit Elizabeth City’s Executive Director, Corrina Ferguson: “There’s no doubt this has been an
incredibly challenging time for our region, but we see National Travel and Tourism Week as an
opportunity to remind our visitors and our residents of the incredible spirit and resiliency of the
travel industry and our workforce. It’s only a matter of time before we all get moving again, and
Northeast North Carolina will be more ready than ever to welcome travelers with open arms.”
Follow the new hashtag, #SpiritoftheAlbemarle and Visit Currituck, Visit Edenton, Camden County
The Gunpowder Incident nearly incites rebellion in Virginia
by: Tara Ross
In 1775, the Gunpowder Incident takes place, nearly
inciting rebellion in Virginia. Naturally, the conflict was
created by guns, ammunition . . . and a British attempt to
confiscate them.
How unsurprising that our ancestors wrote the 2nd
Amendment, with incidents such as these inspiring
them.
townspeople to seek a peaceful resolution.
Dunmore was wily, though. He tried to use the people’s
fears against them, making the (untruthful) argument
that he’d seized the ammunition because he was worried
about a slave uprising! He argued the gunpowder
was more “secure” with him, but he promised to return it,
if needed.
King George III had been limiting the inflow of guns and
ammunition into the American colonies for months. His
Governors were to “take the most Effectual Measures for
Arresting, detaining and securing any Gunpowder or any
sort of Arms or Ammunition,” unless a royal license could
be produced.
It was basically an 18th-century version of gun control,
wasn’t it? The American colonists were furious!
You already know that the shots at Lexington and Concord
were sparked by British General Thomas Gage’s
attempt to seize ammunition stores. But you may not
know what was happening in Williamsburg that same
week. Colonists there were patrolling their own town.
They’d heard a rumor that the Royal Governor, Lord
Dunmore, was preparing to seize their gunpowder.
The rumor was true! Patrick Henry had just delivered his
“Liberty or Death” speech, and Dunmore was worried.
“[T]heir having come to a resolution,” he would write,
“of raising a body of armed men . . . made me think it
prudent to remove some gunpowder which was in a
magazine . . . .”
Dunmore secretly brought in 20 marines and sailors
under the command of Lt. Henry Collins. When the citizens
of Williamsburg began to relax their patrols, Collins
would take advantage of the opportunity.
He didn’t have to wait long. On the night of April 20-21,
the guards who were watching the magazine left early.
At about 3 a.m., Collins and his men quietly seized
about 15 half-barrels of gunpowder, while Williamsburg
was fast asleep. An alarm was raised, but it was too late.
Randolph was inclined to believe this falsehood. Patrick
Henry was not.
By May 3, Henry was outside Williamsburg and in
command of a detachment of men from his home county
of Hanover. He demanded the stolen gunpowder—or
restitution for it.
In the meantime, Williamsburg had finally learned of
the “shot heard ‘round the world” at Lexington Green.
Perhaps some people were getting worried?
The next day, the colony’s receiver general gave Henry
330 pounds. Henry called off his men, but he was only
temporarily appeased. He would soon leave to attend
the Second Continental Congress.
Dunmore hated being outdone by Henry. On May 6, he
issued a proclamation denouncing “a certain Patrick
Henry” and his “deluded Followers,” for unlawfully taking
up arms and exciting rebellion.
Don’t you bet they wore that proclamation like a badge
of pride?
The colonists were livid! The magazine had been
“erected at the public expence . . . for the protection and
security of the country . . . in cases of invasions and
insurrections.” Lord Dunmore had no right to seize the
public’s gunpowder.
Indeed, a mob might have assaulted Dunmore but for
the intervention of Peyton Randolph, the speaker of the
Virginia House of Burgesses. Randolph convinced the
Lord Dunmore escaping to HMS Fowey. He
was forced to flee Virginia after these events.
Corporate Welfare Is Small-Scale Central Planning
by: Patrick Tyrrell and Amanda Snell
Amazon’s taxpayer bidding-war robs taxpayers of their economic freedom.
Amazon’s long search for its second headquarters has
ended. New York and Virginia outlasted the competing
cities. Twenty cities were finalists in the running to be
the location of Amazon’s second headquarters when the
company’s search began over a year ago. HQ2 will be an
additional source of Amazon investment in the economy and
innovation for its customers.
The company’s tactics have come under scrutiny over the
past week because the locations (Arlington, Virginia and
New York’s Long Island City) will heavily subsidize the richest
man in the world, Jeff Bezos, and his company with billions
of New York and Virginia taxpayer dollars. The system
that allows—and even encourages—this form of government
theft and rewards Amazon’s taxpayer bidding-war robs
those taxpayers of the economic freedom to choose what to
do with their paychecks.
Lobbying for Jobs
Virginia and New York are not just getting a free reward in
jobs and economic activity coming to their areas from Amazon’s
move—combined, they promised Amazon around $2
billion in subsidies. Politicians competed for jobs and economic
growth for their constituents, but with taxpayer money.
Big business as a result of government favoritism creates
relatively few big winners and harms taxpayers.
This $2 billion subsidy comes in many forms. Amazon describes
them as “performance-based incentives,” as much
of the money depends on Amazon’s quantitative investment
such as the number of new hires, amount of their yearly
salaries, or their building square footage. The public and private
sector will combine to invest in millions in infrastructure.
Though big business (and the discounts it brings) can be
great for consumers, big business as a direct result of
government favoritism creates relatively few big winners and
harms many more taxpayers, who the government makes
pay for big projects that do not benefit them.
Regarding Amazon’s tax incentives and subsidies, Jared
Walczack from the Center for State Tax Policy at the Tax
Foundation said, “Taxpayers should be very skeptical that
incentives like these will ever pay for themselves.”
How, for example, do the potential taxpayer-subsidized helipads
near each new headquarter benefit anyone not flying
into Amazon Headquarters in a helicopter?
Is It Worth It?
When the government picks winners, taxpayers lose.
There are multitudes of examples of taxpayer-funded
government handouts to big businesses; grants for Yankee
stadium, tax breaks for Facebook, and agriculture subsidies
to corporate mega-farms.
Government subsidies are a zero-sum economic game: one
business or sector benefits at the expense of taxpayers.
Such programs should not exist because they are not fair
and only reward those with the best government connections.
Implications on Economic Freedom
Tax breaks that aren’t company-specific benefit every business.
A government determined to pick winners and losers “for
the benefit of all” is a detriment to the economic freedom of
the people who elected it, which interferes with the ability of
anyone who pays taxes to innovate and compete fairly in the
marketplace.
In contrast, tax breaks that aren’t company-specific benefit
every business and increase economic freedom for the
respective city, state, or nation.
The Heritage Foundation explains that economic freedom is
contingent upon governments that “allow labor, capital, and
goods to move freely, and refrain from coercion or constraint
of liberty…”.
Business and government are both to blame in a scenario
that rewards businesses’ lobbying techniques with taxpayer
dollars.
Walczack at the Tax Foundation continues:
When states pick a particular company and throw money
at them, someone has to pay for that and you’re foregoing
other opportunities… If you focused on creating a more
competitive business tax environment rather than targeting
one white whale, you would have a much better system
overall…
Corporate welfare is worse than government programs that
subsidize able-bodied poor people, primarily because poor
welfare recipients usually are lacking basic needs like shelter
and winter clothing. Jeff Bezos does not fit that category
and can afford his own food.
Northeast North Carolina Family History - - five years later…
By: Irene Hampton - nencfamilyhistory@gmail.com
Five years ago this month I wrote my first column. In it I
referred to a New York Times article, “The Stories That
Bind Us” which was based on a study in 2001 by two psychologists,
Dr Marshall Duke and Dr. Robyn Fivush. They
asked children from four dozen families to answer 20 questions
relating to what they knew about their families. They
called it the Do You Know? scale which included questions
such as: “Do you know where your grandparents grew up?
Do you know where your mom and dad went to high school?
Do you know where your parents met? Do you know of an
illness or something really terrible that happened in your
family? Do you know the story of your birth?”
After comparing the results to a battery of psychological
tests the children took and the results to the questions in the
Do You Know? Scale, they were “blown away” to discover
that the best predictor of children’s sense of control over
their lives, their self-esteem and their emotional health and
happiness was the amount the children knew about their
family’s history. One way to record oral family stories has
recently become available through StoryCorps Connect.
In March, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, their
website added an opportunity to interview family members
remotely and the audio with a still picture will be saved in
the archive of the American Folklore Center at the Library
of Congress. They have lists of questions under a number
of categories that are examples of what to discuss. They
suggest most people might cover six or seven questions in
a 40ish minute interview. The instructions are clear and simple.
If you are interested in learning more the web address
is storycorps.org/participate/storycorps-connect or search
StoryCorps Connect.
Somewhere over the past five years I have related that
after my father’s unexpected death I recorded my mother for
two hours - one about her memories about my father (who
didn’t marry until he was almost 50) and the other about her
recollections growing up on a farm in Canada’s dust bowl
during the 1930’s. I have stated that one of my deepest
regrets is not taking the time to talk to my father more and
record his memories including working for the Hudson Bay
Company in Canada’s arctic during the 1920’s. I know little
of his childhood and almost nothing about his relatives as
most were dead long before my time and there was no one
left to ask.
In early April my older brother died. In mid-March he
was diagnosed with cancer throughout most of his body and
blood clots in his legs and given two weeks to live. He surpassed
that by ten days, dying a few weeks short of his 66th
birthday. He was considered developmentally handicapped
but not from birth. My sister and I have differing recollections
about what happened to him. I’m pretty sure our
mother told me that as a young child he had red measles
and German measles back to back with fevers so high he
was trying to climb the walls. He was never the same after
that. My sister’s recollection is that he had rheumatic fever
and that is what damaged his brain. It isn’t a critical family
history detail and our mother has been gone for 15 years so
we can’t check with anyone. But it matters in that it affected
the rest of his life, and ours as a family.
There may well be things happening in your family during
this pandemic that need to be recorded. Even how you are
dealing with it may be helpful to future generations or to you
when another trial comes in the future as is surely will. And
if you are looking for something to do outside your own family
I can recommend at least three sites that would love to
have you volunteer as a transcriber of existing documents.
1. Library of Congress - By the People (https://crowd.loc.
gov)
2. National Archives - Citizen Archivist Dashboard
(https://www.archives.gov/citizen-archivist)
3. FamilySearch - www.familysearch.org/indexing (over
100 projects in over 20 countries)
Watch Out for Financial Scams Related to Virus
On one hand, the coronavirus has brought out the best in us. People
across the country are pitching in to help others, from providing protective
masks to health care workers to holding video chats with confined
residents of assisted living homes to simply buying gift cards to support
local businesses. On the other hand, a small number of bad actors are taking
advantage of the situation to try to defraud people. How can you guard
against these virus-related scams?
For starters, be aware of three common scams connected to the coronavirus:
• Websites claiming to help and track the pandemic – Look out for websites
that claim to help you work remotely or provide financial resources
to the afflicted. These sites may try to trick you into giving up personal
information, donate money or load malware onto your computer. Don’t trust
information technology (IT) “helpdesk” agents you don’t know. And check
out any obscure organization claiming to help virus victims. You can easily
find many legitimate groups that actually work to alleviate suffering, and
that deserve your support. To find these reputable organizations, go to an
online clearinghouse, such as charitynavigator.org, which rates thousands
of groups on their financial health, accountability and transparency.
• Products claiming to prevent or cure the disease – When there’s a real
treatment or vaccination for COVID-19, it will be big news, and you will
hear about it. Until then, ignore any claims for pills, potions, prescriptions
or other products that promise “miracle” cures. Not only will they waste
your money, but, if you click on attachments from “phishing” emails advertising
these fake treatments, you could end up supplying crooks with
sensitive data, such as your online account logins, passwords, and credit
card and bank account details. You can find a great deal of health information
on the virus at the Center for Disease Control website (www.cdc.
gov), of course, but if you or your loved ones are feeling ill, please contact
a physician.
• “Risk-free” or “guaranteed” investments – The coronavirus has caused
two separate, but related, areas of stress. The first is the health concern,
and the second is the financial/investment component. The enormous volatility
of the financial markets has caused much concern among investors,
and scammers are seizing the opportunity to offer “risk-free” or “guaranteed”
investments “perfect” for this particular time. Again, responding to
these types of offers can bring you nothing but trouble. All investments
carry risk of one type or another, and they typically don’t come with guarantees,
although some do offer significant protection of principal. In these
turbulent times, your best move is to stick with a long-term investment
strategy based on your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon.
Here’s one more suggestion: Warn your elderly relatives about the increased
potential for scams. The elderly are always the most susceptible
to fraud, and now, when they may be more isolated than before, they may
well be even more vulnerable. So, make sure you’re talking to these loved
ones, and urge them not to make any sudden, out-of-the-ordinary financial
moves.
Even in normal times, it’s regrettable that we have to be on the alert for
scam artists – and it’s even more unfortunate during a period of national
crisis. However, by being reasonably vigilant, and by taking the proper precautions,
you can avoid taking on the “collateral damage” that can occur in
this environment.
New Life of Currituck
by Pastor Dan Bergey
would like to step away from the verses in Proverbs this
I month and share some thoughts of encouragement as we
navigate these uncertain times. I have had some wonderful
conversations with people in all walks of life, and various ages.
A common phrase is “I want my life back”. I would ask them
what that means and most often the conversation turns to the
desire of hope in the future. Hebrews chapter twelve starts by
telling us to focus on Jesus who died on the cross because of
his love for us. Right before that there is a phrase that says,
“since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us,
let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so
easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race
that is set before us.” (Hebrews 12:1) Run with endurance?
What does that mean? The word here is patience, being able
to stand up under the stress and strain of life’s challenges. The
chapter begins to tell the stories of people in the Bible who did
just that.
“If they can stand up under trials then I can too”
George Washington once said, “Perseverance and spirit have
done wonders in all ages.” and “the harder the conflict, the
greater the triumph.” How about Ronald Reagan who said,
“Within the covers of the Bible are the answers for all the problems
men face.”
I was talking with a couple that lost their jobs recently and set
out to start their own business and they were thankful that they
were off to a good start. My mind wandered back to stories I
heard as a child about my great grandfather on my dad’s side
traveling by covered wagon and led by horses from Bucks
County Pennsylvania to what is now southern Chesapeake.
They came across the Chesapeake Bay on a steam powered
barge. They made the trip for farmland and to carve out a
lifestyle they believed in. My grandpa on my Mom’s side made
the trip from Ohio a few years later and settled in Moyock
North Carolina. This country is full of stories where tough times
have brought out the best in people.
If those who went before us could do it, then I ask why can’t
we? I want to take time to say thank you to all who are trying
new things even if it might fail or be more difficult then it used
to be. To all those who are on the front lines everyone from our
first responders to those helping people fight for their lives every
day. We are praying for you and we stand with you as you
serve others you may not even know. Thanks to parents and
grand parents who are taking care of children and grandchildren,
even helping them with their schoolwork. To any others
who I may have forgotten, we can do this.
If you are a person who is struggling emotionally, please reach
out and ask for help. Every life is important to God and He
cares for every detail of your life. Please know that you do
not need to struggle alone. You are not alone in your struggle
there is help. We will get through this and I pray we will be
stronger for it.
May God bless you richly.
“Be strong and let your heart take courage, all you who hope
in the Lord.” Psalm 31:24
The Raid on Rocky Mount, N.C. July 1863
As the invading Northern Troops indiscreetly
plundered their way through Eastern, N.C.,
while based at New Bern, General Foster and
Potter laid a path of destruction. With no mercy
for civilians and their private property, Politically
inclined Northern Commanders made no distinction
between military and non-combatants
as previous Western Armies had during periods
of warfare. The Wilmington and Roanoke Railroad
was the main objective of these raids. The
few Confederate regiments were too widely
scattered through North Carolina and Virginia
to provide a proper defense in the Rocky
Mount area. In 1863 the invading Northern
troops pillaged the North Carolina interior creating
a panic upon the non-combatants in the
region. The Northern forces stayed close to the
fortified towns while making frequent raids into
surrounding towns.
General Foster ordered General Potter to
traverse a 200-mile radius and do as much
damage to these towns as possible, no matter
if occupied by non-combatants or combatants.
One of the main objectives was the largest
cotton mill in North Carolina, the Rocky Mount
Mills, and the railroad bridge that crossed over
the Tar River. On July 17th Potter left New Bern
with a considerable force of cavalry, infantry,
and artillery. On the march, they captured
George Green, an official in charge of distributing
state relief funds to the needy families of
North Carolina, confiscating $6,300 from Green
along with his horse, saddle, bridle, and even
his pocket knife. The Northern Forces ravaged
the town of Greenville burning and gutting
the town while pillaging as they tore through
stealing $2,800 from a Dr. Blow and $5,500 of
banknotes along with all jewelry and valuables
from the innocent citizens of the town.
Any item not nailed down by order of the day
-was found to be moonlight requisition, even
all liquor available. Many a drunken invader,
along with contraband troops passed through
towns, farms, and residents’ homes, along their
route. Personal property was confiscated or
destroyed.
At 8:30 am on July 20th, these “troops”
marched into Rocky Mount again, tearing up
all possessions in their path. Finally, they came
to Rocky Mount Mills. Northern “Troops” took
their time burning and ransacking the mill along
with surrounding shops and residents’ homes,
and all of these criminal acts were performed
with no Confederate troops available to oppose
them. These “Troops” were continuing
their destruction through Tarboro, where they
were refired on by a group of Confederate Jr.
Reserves around Daniel’s School House and
a skirmish started immediately. 3 Northern
Officers, several Sergeants, and numerous
enlisted men killed, 18 captured, and the rest of
the Northern forces wisely began a rearguard
action at the bridge while being pursued by
Confederate troops of the Jr. Reserves.
How Does the Cancellation Process Work?
• Start with a FREE consultation to discuss your needs.
• If we see that the circumstances of your agreement qualify you
to exit the timeshare, you’ll be assigned a specialist to walk
you through gathering documentation.
Self Defense Training after COVID-19
lot of work still needs to be done, and while we’re confident
A human ingenuity will prevail and we will survive, the way we do
certain things, like exercising and learning martial arts and selfdefense
is going to change DRAMATICALLY – especially in the coming
12 to 24 months and this is how it’s going to look…
As a student, if you’re in the high risk group or you live with someone
who is, you’re going to want to limit physical contact with others
outside of your immediate family. Going to a class with people from all
walks of life is risk people just won’t take. This means contact activities
like martial arts with people outside your inner circle are a thing
of the past. Instead you’ll need to seek and online training alternative
and/or private or small group training. The days of going down to your
local gym are over.
If you’re a martial arts school or gym owner, your life will never be
the same and your business model needs to change now. It’s time
to adapt or die. In phase 1 of opening up the economy, gyms will be
allowed to reopen – however, they will have strict social distancing
and hygiene measures in place.
Where does that put martial arts, aerobics, cross-fit and other group
activities?
6 feet apart – which means NO CONTACT so all of your combat
sports are done for the time being. Add to that, most martial arts
schools are limited for space and they depend on filling their classes
with as many people as possible. If you can’t do this, you’re going to
have to wait for phase 2 or 3 and in the U.S. that won’t happen until
August.
The demand for on-line self defense learning is now. As people start
to go back to work and the future still looks unstable (there will still be
MANY other people out of work) as a result – crime will go up – it’s
just how it is. So now you have a population who is concerned for
their safety but still unable to go take a class.
They say a treatment is close and a vaccine is still about 12 to 24
months away at best. I don’t see a world in the near future where
people will be willing to have contact with strangers and acquaintances
at the risk of infection. Sure, there will always be those dedicated
few who will train no matter what, but a business can’t survive on that
select few. You need to supplement how and what you teach because
most students are changing the way they learn and work out – and
you need to be there…NOW.
The Self Defense Company Instructor Program provides the turnkey
solution to this issue. As a Self Defense Company Instructor you
will have the curriculum to teach online lessons, provide on-demand
video training as well as in person sessions. We also have instructors
who have developed their own team to go teach under them as well.
Some instructors work out of a central location, others go to the client
and many do a little of both.
It’s a scalable model with multi-stream and multi-level income. It’s all
turnkey and done for you.
Look, how we used to teach and learn self defense is over for now –
fortunately we’ve been doing this successfully since 2007.
I suspect most martial arts schools and gyms will close, unless they
have deep pockets and can forbear paying rent, utilities, insurance
and all other overhead until the re-open in July or August. Who knows
when they will allow competitions and tournaments again. Add to that,
high risk people and people living with that group will not be coming
back to your business.
Even after you re-open, a large amount of your customer base will not
come back because they’re high risk or live with someone who is.
ADAPT or DIE. In order to survive you need to change your business
model and the way you teach. The instructors who will survive are the
ones who can teach online and with private or small groups. To scale
your business, you will need the ability to promote and develop other
instructors on your team as quickly as possible. This is the only model
that’s sustainable in the near future and will enable you survive the
coming years.
Plan Ahead – Times Are Changing
The past six weeks have been an unprecedented time
here in northeastern North Carolina. I doubt that
many of us could have foreseen how our lives would be
affected by COVID-19. This may sound morbid, but now
is a good time to either prepare or update your estate
planning documents. What documents am I referring
to? The following are what I consider to be the essential
documents for estate planning.
1. Will.
2. Living Will.
3. Durable Power of Attorney.
4. Health Care Power of Attorney.
5. Trust – Revocable or Living Trust.
A will states how your property is to be distributed at
your death. If you have young children, you may want to
set up a trust for your assets until your children are older
and name guardians to care for your children.
A living will specifies what kind of end-of-life care you
want - or don’t want - such as extraordinary measures
like a feeding tube or mechanical ventilation. This is
especially useful if you become terminally ill or suffer
severe dementia, and you become unable to communicate
your wishes.
A durable power of attorney is a legal document in
which you give authority to another person - whether
family member, friend, attorney, or bank - to act on your
behalf (to make financial decisions) should you become
disabled, incapacitated, or need their help. This document
protects your financial interests and avoids court
interference.
A health care power of attorney gives the person you
designate as your health care agent broad powers to
make medical decisions for you, including the power to
consent to your doctor not giving treatment or stopping
treatment necessary to keep you alive. This power
exists only for those health care decisions for which you
are unable to give informed consent. Again, as long as
you are capable of making your own medical decisions,
you continue to do so.
A trust provides a unique arrangement for the prudent
management of your assets for your and your family’s
benefit. A living trust provides for the management of
your investments during your lifetime and avoids probate
at your death. You direct your trustee to manage
the assets prudently and distribute the income to you.
A testamentary trust is a trust created in your will at
your death. It does not avoid probate. Probate is the
court-monitored procedure to pass your assets at your
death. Probate administration will be discussed in a
separate article.
If you prepared these documents several years ago, it
may be worthwhile to review them. Has your situation
changed? Have you recently married or divorced?
Have you welcomed new grandchildren? Perhaps the
coronavirus may be just the push you need to call an
attorney and begin the process.
Having difficulty getting started? The first steps are to:
1. Identify your assets.
2. Identify your liabilities.
3. Determine how each asset is titled (individually,
joint with rights of survivorship, etc.)
No one can predict the unexpected and it is important to
plan for emergencies. I do not know when this “shelter
at home” order will end, but I do know you don’t need
wait for the next crisis before you seek professional
advice. Yes, legal services are considered an essential
business.
The information contained in this column is of a general
nature and does not constitute legal advice.
Two Icons That Are Gone
We have recently lost two great musical entertainers, both were juniors.
Ellis Louis Marsalis, Jr. (Born November 1934-Died April 1,
2020) and William (Bill) Harrison Withers, Jr. (Born July 4, 1938-Died
March 30, 2020). I’ll start with Ellis Marsalis.
Ellis Marsalis was born and died in the musical city of New Orleans.
As a teen, he studied clarinet at Xavier University’s Junior School of
Music. He learned tenor saxophone so he could play Rhythm & Blues.
While in high school he began studying piano. In 1955, he graduated
with a B.A. degree in Music Education from Dillard University. In 1957,
he was drafted and joined the Marine Corps and did a two years stint
in Southern California.
by: Robert Threatt
He left the navy in 1965 and relocated to Los Angeles in 1967 to start
a music career. Withers worked as an assembler for several different
companies while recording demo tapes with his own money, shopping
them around and performing in clubs at night. When he debuted with
the song “Ain’t No Sunshine” in 1971, he refused to resign from his
job because he believed the music business was a fickle industry.
Withers married Denise Nocholas in 1973, during her stint on the
sitcom Room 222. They divorced in 1974 and in 1976 he married
Marcia Johnson. Marcia and Bill had two children, Todd and Kori and,
after Bill Withers died, Marcia and the children manage the recording
companies Bill built.
After his military service he returned home to New Orleans and
married Delores Ferdinand and had six sons. Of his six sons, four are
accomplished musicians: Brandford, Wynton, Delfeayo, and Jason.
Most people know of and have heard Brandford and Wynton.
In 1974 he joined the faculty at the New Orleans Center for Creative
Arts High School (NOCCA) where he taught for twelve years. In
1986-1989 he taught at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) in
Richmond, Virginia, where he was the Coordinator of Jazz Studies.
We went on to teach at several other schools always with an interest
on jazz.
Bill Withers was born in Slab Fork, West Virginia and died in Los Angeles,
California. He was an American singer/songwriter and musician
who performed and recorded from 1970-1985. He recorded several
major hits, including “Lean On Me”, “Ain’t No Sunshine”, “Grandma’s
Hands”, “Use Me”, “Just The Two Of Us”’ and “Lovely Day”. His life
was the subject of the 2009 documentary film Still Bill.
This is just a very small look at two musical icons, out of many that
have died, and the music industry, as well as the world, will sorely
miss them. There are many people working odd jobs while trying to
show their talent to the world. There is also a professor or two, that
students in the schools do not know, that is an icon and is a father to
icons. You never truly know the person you may meet.
Robert is retired from the Air
Force and currently is a freelance
writer and Short Wave Radio enthusiast.
He also loves to channel
and play Sudoku.
Reared in Beckley, West Virginia, he was thirteen years old when
his father died. When he was seventeen, he enlisted in the United
States Navy and served for nine years, during which time he became
interested in singing and writing songs.
