PRESIDENT`S MESSAGE

Hello all members,

Guiding our lives and just taking care of ourselves is the number one goal we all have in these

troubled times. Not only has the COVID-19 pandemic affected each and every one of us, but

regionally the price of oil has slowed the Alberta economy in a way I have never seen before.

Although it is difficult I believe we will get through this; we are Albertans, strong hard working

people and we all have a will to want better for ourselves and our children.

Even though the world has slowed down, SCI International has continued and will continue to

keep fighting for the way of life we all enjoy. The important meetings have all be rescheduled

for teleconference now inclusive of the May Board Meeting, SCI Canada meetings, and Alberta

Coalition meetings, ensuring that SCI is still here to protect your freedom to hunt in this great

province of ours.

As our Board of the Drayton Valley Chapter moves forward we do plan to stay committed to

our community, staying focused

on continued support of our

local programs and a continued

presence with the Alberta

Coalition helping Government

with decisions that protect

conservation and hunting

opportunities in Alberta.

To you our membership, I wish

all of us to stay strong, and when

life returns to normal SCI Drayton

Valley will continue to be a leader

in our community.

Good Hunting

AHEIA Youth Hunter Education Camp

The SCI Drayton Valley Chapter is thrilled to be providing sponsorship to support five youth in attending the

2020 Youth Hunter Education Camp facilitated by AHEIA from July 5-10, July 12-17, July 19-24 or July 26-31.

This is a five-day event of fun-filled learning activities with experts sharing their knowledge and providing

instruction in the Alberta Conservation and Hunter Education Program, the Canadian Firearms Safety Course

and much more! The camps are held at Alford Lake Conservation Education Centre for Excellence which is

located approximately one-half hour drive West of Caroline in the spectacular foothills of the Rocky Mountains.

If you have a child, or know of a youth, 12 to 17 years of age who may be interested in attending the camp this

is their chance to submit an entry for this opportunity. Here is what you have to do:

• Please have your child/youth submit a short story to us sharing what they enjoy the most about the outdoors

and why they would like to attend this camp. Youth applicants whose parent/grandparent is a member of

SCI-DV will be given first priority.

• Mail this story to us at Box 6534, Drayton Valley, AB T7A 1R9 for arrival no later than May 1st.

• All applications will be reviewed and five youth chosen to attend the camp with all expenses paid (with the

exception of transportation to and from the camp). Camp value of $414.75.

• Chosen youth will be notified by May 31st.

• Any parents/adults interested in volunteering at the camp; please include this with the youth’s story

submission as well!

• Youth attending the camp will be looked upon to write a story about their experience at camp and submit to

us along with photos to share in an upcoming edition of Hunter’s Edge.

These camps are restricted to those youngsters who have not previously attended the AHEIA Youth Hunter

Education Camp or already possess either their Hunter Education or Canadian Firearm Program certifications.

OUR CHAPTER ACHIEVEMENTS

2018-2019

The SCI – Drayton Valley Chapter

throughout 2018 and 2019 focused their

efforts on a number of initiatives within

our local community, province and on a

global scale.

The Chapter was very proud to continue

their support of the National Archery

in Schools Program (NASP) by way of

supporting local schools with their

equipment needs. We also once again

supported the St. Anthony’s Drayton

Valley Mini-Shoot in February 2019

through the provision of trophies and

medals for the youth participants.

We were also pleased to partner with

the Kin Club as a sponsor for their Annual

STARS Tournament. This provided us the

opportunity to raise awareness of the SCI

Drayton Valley Chapter. We were excited

to be hosts to a hole in one; unfortunately,

the prize was not awarded!

As part of our commitment to sustain

our hunting heritage and provide youth

the opportunity to enjoy the great

outdoors, our Chapter was once again

pleased to host a youth hunter training

course in April 2019 facilitated by our

Hunter Training Chair, Everett Ness. The

class of 6 students learned the basics

of hunter education, survival, wildlife

identification, first aid and hunting rules

and regulations. In addition, we also

sponsored four youth to attend the

AHEIA Youth Hunter Training Camp.

On a provincial scale, the Big Horn Back

Country was a primary focal point for our

Chapter this past year. Representatives

attended meetings and rallies to ensure

a strong a united voice was heard in

support of continued access to these

natural areas.

The Chapter was also pleased to begin

developing a relationship with the

Alberta Society of Professional Biologists

in collaboration with the Alberta Coalition

of SCI Chapters.

Continued efforts also took place in

strengthening the Alberta Coalition,

consisting of our four Alberta SCI

Chapters – Drayton Valley, Red Deer,

Calgary and Badlands. The coalition

focused efforts on the development of

strategic and marketing plans providing a

focused direction for Alberta Chapters in

addressing provincial hunting challenges.

One significant accomplishment to

mention is that the SCI Alberta Coalition

is pleased to now hold a seat on the

AGMAG governing board to help guide

the future of hunting within Alberta.

The AGMAG is directly responsible for

amendments to the hunting regulations

and rules/regulations around the hunting

draw system. In addition, the SCI Alberta

Coalition this fall will be attending a

meeting with Honorable Jason Nixon,

Minister of Environment to discuss SCIs

top five concerns and recommendations

for consideration to affect change within

our province in support of hunting.

Our Blue Bag Humanitarian Program was

also well supported this year through the

provision of one bag in partnership with

Hearts for Lushoto. An additional two

bags were also shared with a primary

school within the Kwazulu Natal region

of South Africa containing essential

school supplies and venison delivered by

the Mahan family.

Looking into the coming year, our Chapter

is committed to sending additional youth

to the AHEIA youth summer camp, and

also partner with Cabela’s to support

inner-city youth to attend as well. We

will also continue to be deeply invested

within our local NASP program in schools.

We are always open to suggestions from

our membership as to focused projects

that fall within our mandate. If you have

an idea, please share it with us!

SCI Drayton Valley Chapter representatives attendance at

the annual convention is critical to our chapters success.

Presence at the convention has allowed us the opportunity

to create lasting relationships with numerous outfitters and

SCI Representatives from around the world. Our presence

at convention, along with the recognition we have received

over the years has resulted in our chapter being known and

respected on an international scale.

Chapter representatives were able to solidify some wonderful

outdoor opportunities; however, in light of our current

economic crisis, our 2020 Banquet is currently on hold.

ST. ANTHONY’S

NASP ARCHERY

TOURNAMENT

St. Anthony’s Annual NASP Shoot

was held on February 22nd. It was an

opportunity for youth to participate in a

NASP archery friendly competition and

to better prepare participants for NASP

provincials, which was held in Edmonton

in March 2020. SCI Drayton Valley

Chapter once again was a proud sponsor

of the tournament trophies and awards

for the youth participants.

A special thank you is extended to

Heather Rominick for her dedication and

passion of NASP and for coordinating

this wonderful event! SCI Drayton Valley

will continue to support NASP within our

schools as part of our commitment toward

ensuring youth have an opportunity to

learn more about the sport of archery

and all that our great outdoors offers.

AFRICAN BLUE BAG DELIVERY

Our family had longed with anticipation for our

African holiday and all the adventures that would

come our way. One miraculous adventure that filled

our hearts with joy was the opportunity to deliver

an SCI Humanitarian Blue Bag to the KwaZuluNatal

local primary school as part of WOW Africa’s

iThemba project (meaning “Hope” in the native Zulu

language), which is aimed at funding and supporting

local schools and scholars.

We were filled with excitement as we departed WOW

Africa Madaka Game Ranch with our Blue Bag and

variety of venison for the school. Upon approaching

the closed school gate entrance a small group of

children ran out to open the gate and greet us with

their radiant smiles. My heart was overflowing with

emotion. This small three dwelling school house

was set deep into the African landscape. The 118

students walked from every direction to be there;

each adorning their navy blue school uniform and

being under the best behavior.

The principal of the school accompanied us through

the property. We entered the cook house where the

lady chef prepared the daily meal within large metal

pots a top a bed of coals in a corner stone fireplace.

The cook, a very friendly lady, was pleased and most

receptive to have her photo taken with Hannah

and Adam. Today for lunch was soup and rice. The

children start school at 7am and the school day ends

at 2pm.

The children congregated in the school yard and

lined up by grade in preparation to receive their

lunch meal. The youngest were first. As they waited

13 |

the principal and teachers encouraged and led the

children in Zulu song and dance for us. The sounds,

movements, joy and shyness of the children filled

our hearts with emotion…”my cup runneth over’ and

tears of joy uncontrollably escaped and rolled down

my cheeks. To see and feel this experience was like no

other. The contentment of the children brought such

peace and understanding for their simpler way of life.

All the children who attended this school came from

family dwellings squatting upon government land in

the area. This was their way of life and they knew

nothing different, longed for nothing more.

A walk through the classrooms came thereafter. The

brick and mud buildings contained small wooden

desks, chalkboards and walls adorned with learning

resources. The children were working from exercise

booklets which involved coloring, numbers, letters,

counting, shapes, sorting, and spelling. Upon

chalkboards problem solving statements were

being worked on in the higher grades. This was a

Kindergarten to grade 7 school. Both English and Zulu

dialect were being taught. The principal explained

that she received an annual operating budget of

$18,000 rand (equivalent to $1,630 Canadian) to

obtain supplies for the school and hire educators.

The principal, now 55 years of age, shared she was

planning to retire in four years’ time. The school

property has no power or water well. Large green

water tanks in which rain water was collected were

placed on the property and provided them with their

water.

The children finished their lunch and it was time to

present our SCI Blue Bag filled with essential school

supplies and items of enjoyment, along with the

venison. The field balls were most sought after!

Hannah and Adam pumped them up and off they all

Written By: Paula Mahan

went to play kick ball in the school yard. One young

man felt the ball was a gift for him alone so it took some

convincing by Hannah for him to understand they

were for all the children to enjoy and to participate

in a group ball toss. The children were happy to have

their photo taken with lots of smiles; they would say

cheese, and wave their arms in the air. An embracing

hug was also freely given. The teachers and principal

were so appreciative for the gift we brought.

The time came for us to say goodbye. A few hugs

were given and the children still playing with the

soccer balls throughout the school yard waved goodbye

and ran along the fence line to see us off. What

a blessed day; an experience that will be treasured

for a lifetime with a most valuable lesson learned…“a

wise person is one who recognizes we always have

enough to be happy if we are enjoying what we do

have rather than longing for more”.
