Like so many up and down the country, our community can be proud of 

how it is responding to the coronavirus pandemic. These are extraordinary 

times, but we can all be thankful we are part of a community that cares. 

And like so many other businesses impacted by the restrictions designed 

to reduce the spread of the virus, this publication has had to adapt. The 

Wanstead Village Directory and the South Woodford Village Gazette have 

joined forces to continue publishing. Copies will not be delivered to homes 

for the time being (visit swvg.co.uk/cv for an explanation), but every effort 

has been made to provide as many residents with a copy as possible, via our 

network of distribution stands in supermarkets.

COVID-19 is an illness that can affect your lungs and airways. It’s caused 

by a virus called coronavirus. Stay at home if you have coronavirus

A number of homes across Aldersbrook, 

Wanstead and South Woodford have become 

collection points for foodbank donations 

to fill the gap left by the closure of regular 

collection locations, such as churches and 

some shops. “Over the Easter weekend, our 

network received items exceeding £800 

in value, which we delivered to Redbridge 

Foodbank,” said James Paterson, organiser 

of the Tin in the Bin Network, which has also 

received over £3,000 in cash donations. For a

but with the Prime Minister recovering 

from COVID-19 and the government largely 

operating from home, my working week has 

become a daily challenge to come up with 

picture ideas… I usually run in Wanstead 

Park, but this time I took my cameras. I spent 

an hour photographing walkers, runners and 

cyclists, all stopping to view the blue carpet of 

spring flowers,” said Stefan. 

Local resident creates website to help 

shoppers avoid supermarket queues 

Computer programmer Tom McGuinness 

has launched a website to help people check 

how busy their local supermarkets are. “When 

COVID-19 hit the UK, I tried to think of ways 

I could help others. With help from my wife 

and an Italian friend, I created QCheck. It 

shows a map of your area with colour-coded 

markers for each supermarket. While people 

are queueing, they report how long the wait 

is. This appears on the map, helping others to 

avoid busy stores,” said Tom, who has lived in

With kerbside recycling collections 

suspended, Redbridge Council is keen to 

assure residents that recyclable materials are 

not going to landfill. “General waste collected 

from households goes to a waste processing 

plant, where it is initially shredded and dried. 

This process reduces the volume of the waste 

and minimises the production of methane… 

From the dried waste, recyclates can be 

extracted, such as metals, glass and organic 

material. The remaining material can be used 

for energy generation,” said a spokesperson.

Local resident Giles Wilson – who runs the 

Wansteadium blog and organises the annual 

Wanstead Fringe – has launched the Wanstead 

Social Distance Club, offering a series of online 

talks. “The inaugural meeting took place last 

month when author John Rogers spoke about 

some of the fascinating things he’s learned 

while walking around our bit of east London,” 

said Giles. Local crime writer Anya Lipska has 

also taken part in the club, which broadcasts 

its presentations using video conferencing

Redbridge Council support for 

businesses during COVID-19 

Redbridge Council has so far paid out £16.3m 

of government business grants to small 

businesses in the borough in response to 

the COVID-19 pandemic. “It’s important our 

local business community know that there is 

support available to them at this difficult time 

through the government grant scheme,” said 

the Leader of Redbridge Council, Councillor 

Jas Athwal. Businesses can check their 

eligibility against the criteria for grants of up

around play areas in Wanstead and South 

Woodford’s parks. “This measure has 

been taken to help reduce the spread of 

coronavirus, as it survives on plastic for 

36 hours and on metal for 12 hours. This means 

children can contract COVID-19 by touching 

infected play equipment,” explained a 

Redbridge Council spokesperson. “If our parks 

are not used responsibly, the government may 

be forced to close them. Help us to keep our 

parks open by adhering to the guidelines.”

A club which helps people improve their 

public speaking skills is inviting new members 

to join them in their online sessions during 

lockdown. “We currently meet via Zoom on 

the second and fourth Tuesday of each month, 

from 7.15pm to 8.45pm during this lockdown 

period. Prepared speeches and table topics 

are the main focus, and members are given 

feedback, which helps them improve their 

confidence and speaking skills,” said Pamela 

Odukoya from the Woodford Green Speakers.

WhatsApp groups bring residents 

together during current crisis 

Residents in streets across Redbridge have 

set up WhatsApp groups to help neighbours 

support each other during the current crisis. 

Primrose Road and Violet Road in South 

Woodford are two such streets where new 

connections have been made to ensure 

the vulnerable can get supplies and vital 

medication. “We are lucky to have doctors 

living on our street who have been able to 

help with information, and we even have a 

baker who can deliver delicious pastries!” said

Coronavirus Wellbeing Service helps 

hundreds across the borough 

Local artist offers free ‘relaxation 

through art’ classes online 

A council-led initiative to help protect those 

most vulnerable to coronavirus has provided 

aid or advice to hundreds of callers requesting 

help and support. As well as responding to 

calls, the Wellbeing Service has also arranged 

for deliveries of food parcels and other 

essential items to a number of Redbridge 

residents. “To help us to support those who 

most need it, before using the service, please 

ask family, friends and neighbours to support 

you… If you still need help, then please call,”

Wanstead artist Brenda Coyle invites residents 

of all ages to take part in her online art 

classes during lockdown. “I can’t keep still, 

so I decided to start running ‘relaxation 

through art’ classes for free online. I asked 

my students to pass on my email to friends 

and family so that they could join in, doing 

a bit of meditative art while self-isolating,” 

said Brenda, who had to suspend her classes 

at Wanstead House. Brenda’s tutorials cover 

a range of techniques, including crafts for

Temporary mortuary facilities built 

on a section of Wanstead Flats 

IN THE BUILDING TRADE FOR 30 YEARS 

Construction of the mortuary 

on Wanstead Flats 

A temporary mortuary has been erected on 

Wanstead Flats in response to the coronavirus 

pandemic. The London Resilience Forum, 

which manages emergency preparedness for 

London, was responsible for its design and 

construction. The Coronavirus Act 2020 gave 

the government the power to demand the 

City of London Corporation – which owns the 

land – provide the site for this purpose. The 

land will be reinstated once the crisis ends. 

The facility will act as a holding point for 

bodies until cremation or burial takes place.

Wanstead resident’s gift appeal 

Nine-year-old Wanstead resident Riku 

Fryderyk Borowczyk – who is a member of 

the South Woodford Young Writers Club – has 

signed a book deal with Pegasus to publish 

his story The Witching Hour. “In this story, I 

want to help children who are afraid of the 

dark by making them think differently about 

what might be there that they cannot see,” 

explained Riku. “We’re looking forward to the 

launch of the book in the next few months 

and seeing The Witching Hour on the shelves 

of our local bookstores,” said his mum. 

Wanstead resident Frank Charles is seeking

schools donate equipment to hospital 

A bear hunt has been created in Wanstead to 

help keep children entertained on their daily 

walk. “The bear hunt is all around Wanstead, 

centred around Leicester Road and Hereford 

Road, but goes as far as Warren Road, Gordon 

Road and Rodney Road,” explained Lorna 

Sparks. There are 45 bears to find, each with 

an accompanying letter that spells out a 

secret message. “There is even a certificate for 

completed entries. Good luck on your bear

Schools in Wanstead and South Woodford 

have joined a number of others across the 

borough in donating personal protective 

equipment to healthcare staff during the 

coronavirus pandemic. Staff from 20 school 

communities in Redbridge collected over

with the supplies sent to Queen’s Hospital

launched to support stables

month in aid of Haven House 

The Friends of Aldersbrook Riding School was 

established last month to help support the 

local stables. “Our aim is to support the school 

to help ensure it continues to provide an 

invaluable facility for our local communities. 

We will be organising fundraising activities 

that will enhance the wellbeing of our horses 

and run activities, talks and social events,” said 

a spokesperson. Children are invited to paint 

a picture of a horse or pony to be displayed 

at the school, with the best entry receiving a

Haven House Children’s Hospice’s annual

The creation of the NHS in the 

aftermath of the Second World War 

was a monumental achievement, 

and the NHS has grown to be our most 

treasured national asset. 

Today, it employs over a million people and 

provides a vast range of services to all of us, 

sending us out healthy when we are young, 

mending our injuries and curing our illnesses. 

It is there for us at every stage of our lives. 

The NHS now faces its most difficult 

challenge since its formation, so when 

the call went out at the end of March 

for volunteers to help, it was of little 

surprise that over 700,000 people 

signed up. 

Living close to Whipps Cross 

Hospital, I wondered if there was 

an opportunity to help out at the 

hospital where my three children 

were born, and where we have 

been looked after for the last 25 

years. A quick online search found their 

appeal for volunteers to help them deal with 

the COVID-19 pandemic. 

I completed an occupational health 

questionnaire, a DBS check and watched a 

series of training videos, answering some 

simple questions on each. 

My start date arrived. Bring some ID. After four 

years of retirement, it felt like one of those 

long-forgotten first days at a new job. Exciting, 

with a few nerves thrown in to spice it up. 

Myself and five other new volunteers 

were given a tour of the hospital and an 

explanation of the types of work we might 

be asked to do. The welcome was warm and 

friendly and we were immediately made to 

feel appreciated. 

The aim is to use volunteers to do those tasks 

which take clinical staff away from providing 

care. Whether fetching medicine from the 

pharmacy, equipment from stores, moving 

documents around the hospital, taking 

food and drinks to staff, or even doing their 

personal shopping, we do anything that helps 

a medical professional to spend more of their 

time directly treating patients. 

Our wellbeing is paramount to the hospital. 

Whipps, like all hospitals, are experts in 

keeping people as safe as possible, and I don’t 

feel any more likely to catch COVID-19 inside 

the hospital than in a supermarket. I may 

catch it. I expected to catch it anyway. But if 

you have anxieties about catching it, then 

volunteering in a hospital may not be for you. 

I have thoroughly enjoyed my first week. The 

people are inspirational; the volunteers, the 

staff who lead and teach us, the staff we are 

supporting. They form one enormous team 

all pulling in the same direction and being 

supportive of each other at this difficult time.

Every neighbour helps 

As a part-time Tesco delivery driver, Alex Hanford has found himself 

escalated to key worker status during the current crisis. And, having only 

recently moved to South Woodford, has found a community that cares 

So much seems to have changed in the 

last few weeks, and my first thought 

has to be how inspired I am by the 

NHS and all the health and care workers 

who have faced up to this crisis first hand. 

Things that went on in the background are 

now at the forefront of our minds. 

On a personal level, I have been thrilled to 

see the groundswell of support generated 

in our local community. Having only lived in 

South Woodford for just over a year, I have 

very few local connections, so the opportunity 

to reach out online to offer help and engage 

with neighbours we had never met was 

invaluable! 

My partner and I were put in touch with a lady 

living in New York, who was concerned about 

her mum living just over the road from us, and 

we have been able to help her on a number 

of occasions, by shopping for essentials and 

getting to know her (from two metres away, 

of course!). 

As a car owner, I wanted to do what I could to 

support the NHS, so I registered as a volunteer 

with them and have already carried out my 

first couple of assignments for the Redbridge 

Wellbeing Service, delivering food parcels and 

collecting prescriptions for local residents. 

As my regular role in Central London 

delivering transport services is now mainly 

based from home, I have seen my part-time 

job as a Tesco delivery driver escalate from 

pocket money for a new car to a key worker 

role as well! Our whole team in Enfield 

Customer Fulfilment Centre has been flat-out 

for weeks, busier than Christmas for weeks on 

end, with no planning or build-up, keeping 

shopping moving and vulnerable customers’ 

supplies delivered. 

One of the most touching things for me 

personally has been the response from Tesco 

customers; from a young mum with serious 

underlying health issues who was frankly 

terrified during the first days of the lockdown, 

to another lady who had just lost her brotherin-law 

to COVID-19 and was still thanking me 

for just doing my job. 

As I can’t be with my own mum in 

Buckinghamshire, or our family in Yorkshire 

or Cornwall, it really does help me to think 

that there are other people doing exactly 

what I have seen in South Woodford, going 

above and beyond to provide that support 

and essential services to people around them 

in need. 

It appears we will have to adjust the way we 

live for some months as society comes to 

terms with this illness. My hope is that we can 

continue with some of these adjustments in 

the longer term, and keep the friendships we 

are forming under such trying circumstances 

going as times improve and people feel safer 

and more secure in themselves.

(Lock) Down with the Kids 

Riku Fryderyk Borowczyk is a member of the South Woodford Young 

Writers Club and has recently signed a publishing contract with 

Pegasus. Here, the nine-year-old offers his poetic thoughts on lockdown 

It’s been three weeks since my last day of 

school. The way I see this situation is that 

it has highlighted a once-in-a-lifetime 

event, a never-ending holiday. So, you may 

think, what to do during this holiday when 

you cannot go out much? 

This is a big question mark. While in 

lockdown, I have had time to work on my 

book publication, been able to practice skills 

and work on some things I couldn’t do much 

because of school. Playing board games 

with my family (don’t get mixed up with 

bored games, those are a terrible invention!), 

cooking, or even playing in the garden, are a 

great way of spending time at home. 

As for me, I now spend Wednesdays with 

South Woodford Young Writers Club on Zoom, 

still consuming new skills of writing. 

I miss my favourite sausage rolls from 

Wanstead High Street. However, my mum now 

has more time and inspiration for cooking. 

My parents don’t live together (not that I’m 

making myself Andy from The Suitcase Kid by 

Jacqueline Wilson), but due to the lockdown, 

I get to spend more time with my dad as he is 

working less. This is very exciting, as it’s not a 

usual thing for me. 

Although there are many positive things to 

think about, I realise that our world is out of 

control, that Mother Nature has turned on us 

and endangered people’s lives. I hear about 

what’s happening on the radio, although my 

mum thinks that hearing or watching the 

news now might not be for my young ears. 

In the Young Writers Club, our teacher, 

Shameem, has given us the splendid task of 

writing a poem about Earth, and I would like 

to share my poem with you here. 

The tables have been turning 

My stomach’s stopped churning 

A bad man threw a black cloud 

And devastated that town 

Mother Nature was tired of us 

Now it’s over 

There’s not a Range Rover seen 

There will be no illness on our Queen 

Or us 

We’ll stay and pray for the best 

And we won’t make a fuss 

Let’s enjoy and appreciate 

That there’s less littering 

Our world’s ecology is quickening 

My heart is alive 

Full of happiness 

It’s a time when people start spending time with

A 

lot of artists have home studios 

or areas to work in, but some 

forms of artwork need to be done 

in professional workshops. Artists, like 

writers, try to have a schedule, a discipline, 

although by its very nature, the muse 

strikes when least expected. It doesn’t keep 

office hours. 

Having recently moved more into 

printmaking, I regularly book studio time at 

a printmakers. This is because the techniques 

I’m using involve a lot of hazardous chemicals 

and acids. It also gives me access to a large 

press, but more than that, it also allows me 

to mix with a small community of other 

printmakers who share their techniques and 

enthusiasm. This is, of course, on hold for now. 

Luckily, I do have a smaller press at home 

which allows me to continue working. I work 

on copper and other metals. 

The Mersea Oyster Shed shown here is a copper 

etching with aquatint and was completed 

before the restrictions were put in place, but 

I have managed to print a limited edition of 

prints at home. 

Another method of printing, which can be 

done without a press, is called mono printing. 

For all those people stuck indoors, this is 

an easy way to get creative and stave off 

boredom. It’s something parents can do with 

children, from the very simple art of potato 

stamping, which many would remember from 

school, to the more sophisticated. There are 

lots of free YouTube videos that show this easy 

technique. 

YouTube is also a great source of free art 

lessons. Plus, Facebook and Instagram are 

awash with artists offering free tuition at the 

moment. 

The shutdown has affected many of us in 

different ways. Woodford Arts Group member 

Darren Evans had just opened his exhibition at 

Lopping Hall when it was cancelled. Our own 

travel-themed exhibition planned for the end 

of May will no doubt also be cancelled. But 

hopefully, we will put this exhibition on later 

in the year. This will take us out of Woodford to 

all corners of the globe and we have all been 

continuing with our art in its many forms. In 

the meantime, we will be putting on a virtual 

exhibition and will publish details of this 

nearer the time. 

Fellow member John Rowlands is a metal 

sculptor and has recently finished a piece of 

work of rugby players in action. He is now 

working on a large commission in his garden. 

You can see John in his workshop on our 

podcast page on our website. These podcasts 

are a work of art in themselves as Cheryl 

Gabriel, who was a BBC producer-turned 

photographer, has used her considerable skills 

to ‘produce’ us! 

Other members of Woodford Arts Group are 

also still working from home. David Varney 

continues to work on his resin pieces, which 

can also be seen on our podcast page. 

Many members’ plans have been 

disrupted, and to quote Ged Rumak: 

“If you want to make God laugh, tell 

him your plans.” Ged planned lots of 

open-air painting at the coast but is 

now working from sketchbooks. Plein 

air sessions were something else we 

as a group planned to do more of this 

season, especially around Woodford, 

to get the community involved. 

Alison Stenhouse has also been working 

on a coastal theme of the east coast, 

while Emma Liebskind has been 

making use of her garden, 

pondering natural forms and 

structures that represent 

home and places of safety. 

All in all, we are keeping 

in touch and encouraging 

each other until we 

can get together again 

and get our Travellers’ 

Tales exhibition back 

on the road.

Emergency Appeal 

Haven House Children’s Hospice has called off many of its fundraising 

activities for the foreseeable future. Chief Executive Mike Palfreman 

warns this could have a devastating impact and appeals for support 

Nationwide, strict restrictions are 

now in place to stop the spread 

of coronavirus. Public gatherings, 

events and ceremonies have been 

cancelled and shops and businesses have 

closed their doors. 

Our hospice has now launched an Emergency 

Fund to help us keep supporting local children 

and their families who need specialist care. 

These are challenging times where no one 

is immune from the effects of coronavirus. 

Haven House now faces the possibility that 

hundreds of seriously ill children and families 

who depend on the care given by our frontline 

nurses will stop – threatening our very 

existence. Every day, children and families 

need our help, but now more so than ever. 

Families tell us we are their lifeline and we 

cannot let them face this alone. The impact 

that coronavirus will have on our vulnerable 

children and families could be devastating. 

Haven House faces a serious crisis and we 

need the help of our community. 

We welcome the government’s 

announcement to pledge up to £200m to the 

UK’s hospice sector. 

Haven House is on the front line in providing 

care for some of the most vulnerable children 

in our local community. I would like to thank 

the Chancellor for recognising the vital role we 

play in supporting the NHS in its fight against 

COVID-19. Whilst we await details of precisely 

what this funding will mean to Haven House, 

we can say that these emergency funds will 

be essential to keep us going in the short 

term and enable us to continue providing 

a lifeline and specialist care to our children 

and families. 

We are determined to play our part and 

support the NHS at this critical moment, and 

are doing so through offering both beds and 

expertise, working closely every day with our 

NHS colleagues to ensure children at endof-life 

and in non-emergency situations but 

without COVID-19 can be swiftly transferred 

out of hospital to free up those beds. 

The funding is very welcome but does not 

mean we can become complacent in our 

appeal for funds. We are projecting a loss in 

income of around £500,000 in the next three 

months and the situation beyond then is 

hugely uncertain for everyone. We are keen 

to highlight our continued need for support 

from the community, from whom around 80% 

of our income traditionally comes through 

fundraising and our shops. 

I would like to thank our supporters who 

have responded to our call for help over the 

past weeks. Thank you for holding us in your 

hearts. This support is so essential and we will 

continue to need it now and into the future.

I 

am self-isolating. Never heard of such 

an expression before. I suppose it’s not 

an entirely new phenomenon. Think of 

Simeon Stylites spending 37 years on a 

small pedestal on the top of a pillar near 

Aleppo in the fifth century AD, denying 

himself the blessing of human company. 

Similar to, but not the same as, solitary 

confinement forced upon you by others, 

often as a punishment. Our 2020 isolation 

is voluntary but forced on us by the threat 

of a disease no-one fully understands. Yet. 

I stood at least six feet away 

(sorry, I’m still not fully metric) 

I am, in fact, self-isolating with another self. 

He reads The Telegraph; I read the i newspaper. 

The political spectrum nicely spanned. Twice 

the number of brain-exercising crosswords. 

And double the dose of daily reading 

matter and the challenge of cheerfulness 

in this strange and uncertain environment. 

Unprecedented in my long lifetime, though 

my grandmother died in the great flu 

pandemic of 1918, leaving my mother as the 

oldest of four children at the age of nine. 

I ventured down to my newsagent, Webb’s, 

opposite the Odeon. Stood outside feeling 

embarrassed, foolish even, putting on a mask 

and blue plastic gloves. Opened the door to 

be received by welcoming gales of laughter 

from my friendly shopkeeper. I think I grinned 

too, but not visibly, for obvious reasons. I 

stood at least six feet away (sorry, I’m still 

not fully metric) and issued my request: 

“Could you deliver The Telegraph as well 

as the i from now on?” He was still 

trying to moderate his mirth as he 

reached for his ledger to emend 

the entry on my address page. 

“Will there be an extra cost?” “Yes,” another 

50p, to cover The Telegraph on Sunday. The i 

only comes out from Monday to Saturday.” He 

stood back as I crossed the floor to deposit the 

sheaf of subscriber vouchers on the counter. 

But he waved aside my purse: “I’ll let you know 

what you owe in due course.” 

Walking back home, I felt as if I’d mislaid 

normality. The spring blossom was just as 

beautiful, but my brief, cautious exchange 

with my newsagent, even in my mask and 

gloves, had seemed like a small treat. And 

another treat awaited me on the doorstep. 

Two bags containing groceries delivered 

by my next-door neighbours. Here was one 

of the upsides of our predicament as two 

persons squarely into the high-risk category. 

More hand-washing before we unpacked 

the contents. Not gold or frankincense or 

myrrh but nevertheless, items of far greater 

value than usual because they evidenced the 

kindness of others. Parsnips and small new 

potatoes, sugar snaps and pears. Easy-peel 

satsumas and Granny Smith apples. Semiskimmed 

milk. These most ordinary items had 

acquired a worth massively misrepresented by 

their modest price tags. Bounty in a recyclable 

Sainsbury’s plastic bag. 

From the serious to the comic: as a nation, 

we are supposedly famous for our sense of 

humour. The newspapers are full of gems: one 

correspondent to the Letters page reminded 

us that clocks go forward shortly. “Not sure 

how far forward but I think four months 

would be good,” he wrote. Another exponent 

of the comic art wrote: “I felt like Howard 

Carter must have done when he first gazed 

on the riches in the tomb of Tutankhamun: I 

visited Waitrose in Godalming where, in aisle 

five, what a sight met my eyes: stretching 

seemingly into the horizon was row upon

row, nine-pack upon nine-pack of 

the supermarket’s own brand, pure 

white, ultra-soft bathroom tissue.” 

Another commentator offered this 

instructive advice: “Noah only took 

two of everything when he 

went on the Ark. Please try 

to remember that when 

you go shopping.” 

This new ‘lifestyle’ has 

certainly pitchforked 

us into a place where 

there is vastly more 

time for reflection. 

It’s rather ironic that I had 

just mastered the use of the calendar app 

on my iPhone at the very time when all my 

joyfully laid plans for the year ahead 

have been cancelled. The electronic 

pages are all blank. I’m turning to 

books that have lodged comfortably side by 

side on my bookshelves for years (no social 

distancing for them!). Some either never read 

or well worth revisiting. While engaged in the 

same activity, my partner in isolation came 

upon a book entitled The Story of Sir Walter 

Raleigh. Inside it, an inscription indicating that 

it had been presented to him on Sports Day 

at Shenfield Primary School: first prize in the 

wheelbarrow race. “Someone else must have 

come first too,” he remarked. I had completely 

forgotten that the ‘wheelbarrow’ took the 

form of a classmate. I believe my children 

are presenting me with a Kindle on my very 

special birthday this month to ensure my 

stock of literature can never be exhausted. 

I can sense how easy it would be to distance 

oneself completely and not just physically 

from the rest of the world under the current 

restrictions. To focus only on our own feelings 

of deprivation. I think of my sister returning 

recently from her five-month stint working 

abroad and how the longed-for rolling 

out of the red carpet of welcoming hugs 

was out of the question. But I’m bound to 

admit that the challenge is far greater for 

families starting to restructure their days 

around home-learning and probably huge 

loss of earnings and the satisfaction of a job 

somewhere out there interfacing directly with 

colleagues. And nurses and doctors, transport

workers, those in 

government; the list 

is endless. As my son remarked (over the 

telephone): “I keep thinking we’ll all wake up 

and find it was a dream.” I have been thinking 

back to an extraordinary book I read and 

re-read some years ago, by Bryan Keenan: An 

Evil Cradling. It was his account of his time as a 

hostage in Beirut with John McCarthy, mostly 

in a dark underground room, often manacled 

together, daily facing the probability of 

execution. No books, no music. No colour. No 

sunshine. Both emerging after close on five 

years as sane and whole and even 

forgiving human beings, with their 

sense of humour miraculously 

intact. Think on these things when 

you feel low and anxious. 

I will tell you something: I am going 

to do my damnedest to be alive 

to write my next diary in two 

months’ time.

The River Roding has a long history 

of flooding causing devastating and 

widespread impacts to north-east 

London. With the impact of climate change, 

flooding is predicted to happen more 

frequently unless we act now. This project 

will reduce flooding to over 2,000 homes 

by 2080 and improve the resilience of 

businesses and infrastructure to flooding 

incidents in the Woodford and Ilford area. 

During the COVID-19 pandemic, we 

are continuing to deliver our flood risk 

management projects where it is safe for 

our teams and delivery partners to do so. 

The safety of our staff, partners and the 

communities we work in remains a priority for 

us. This includes undergoing critical activities 

to operate, maintain and develop key flood 

assets and respond during flooding events. 

In these difficult times, we will ensure that 

any work done will be within Public Health 

England’s guidelines. 

A great way to prepare for flooding is to 

create a personal flood plan, allowing you to 

have useful information ready to use in an 

emergency. This includes taking measures 

such as: 

• Preparing a bag of essential items to take 

with you if you have to leave your home, 

including medication, warm and waterproof 

clothing, phone chargers and important 

documents like passports, insurance 

documents and contact numbers. Keep this 

in a safe place! 

• Creating a checklist of things to do to 

protect your family, such as turning off the 

electricity and gas to prevent a fire. 

• Consider moving sentimental items 

upstairs. 

• Check your building and contents insurance 

policy covers flooding. 

• Look at the best way of stopping floodwater 

entering your property and how to 

use appropriate property protection 

products, such as flood barriers or air brick

EMERGENCY LESSON 

The emergency action taken to combat coronavirus needs to be 

applied to other areas, like climate change and biodiversity destruction, 

says Councillor Paul Donovan (Wanstead Village, Labour) 

The coronavirus outbreak has turned 

life upside down across the world. 

It has brought unprecedented 

restrictions on normal life, forcing people 

to stay at home, distance and isolate. 

The present state we find ourselves in also 

shows people exactly what an emergency 

looks like. The whole workings of society have 

been mobilised to counter the threat of the 

virus. No business as usual, no waiting till the 

money is available to act – actions have been 

taken immediately; a matter of life and death. 

Many people have said life will never be the 

same once the virus has passed. This may be 

true; it should be true. There is, of course, the 

danger that things will return to business as 

usual, with this period being viewed as an 

aberration, unlikely to occur again for some 

time. It could also mean a doubling up of 

destructive processes to make up for the time 

lost during the crisis. This would be a very 

stupid position to adopt. Lessons need to be 

learned; life cannot go on as before. 

One of the positive developments coming out 

of the measures taken to counter the virus 

has been the drop in pollution and emissions 

– largely due to much of the environmentally 

damaging activity undertaken on a daily 

basis having stopped. The suggestion that in 

China far more people have not died due to 

cuts in pollution caused by the slowdown in 

economic activity than have due to the virus is 

somewhat revealing. 

Fish have returned to the waterways of 

Venice for the first time in decades. There 

are many other benefits that have come for 

the environment because the economic 

juggernaut has slowed, allowing the earth 

to breathe. 

Moving forward to the time after the virus, 

the same urgency applied to this emergency 

needs transferring to other threats facing 

humanity, like climate change, pollution and 

biodiversity destruction. The positives for 

addressing these issues for having several 

months of business not as usual need to be 

learned and built upon. The economic model 

must change and change quickly to one that 

promotes sustainable living and outlaws 

environmentally destructive practices. 

Government at all levels has seen an 

emergency and just what can be done to 

address it. Time to transfer the means and 

approach to environmental matters, not put 

them on the back burner to a day when things 

can be afforded. 

People will have learned much about 

themselves and ways of living over this period. 

Things will change, hopefully for the better. 

They certainly need to alter for the common 

good. If the coronavirus has taught nothing 

else, it must be the importance of living in 

harmony with nature and coming together to 

confront adversity at times of trouble.

Seeds of Hope 

Growing your own fruit and vegetables is good for the environment 

and, during these times of isolation, it’s good for the soul as well, says 

Jennifer Hawkes of Wanstead Climate Action 

Grow Your Own, Dig for Victory! These 

ideas have been around for a long 

time and have played their part in 

our shared history. But, as I’m sitting here 

in self-isolation with the sun streaming 

through my windows, I’m struck by 

how much the idea of sowing seeds and 

growing food at home has to offer us at 

this point in history when we are facing a 

climate crisis, a deluge of plastic waste, a 

global pandemic and extreme isolation. 

The simple act of sowing seeds and growing 

food has its part to play in supporting 

individuals, communities and society to grow 

hope in the midst of these crises. 

As we face growing levels of carbon emissions, 

growing your own can reduce the carbon 

footprint of your fruit plate to almost zero. 

According to Mike Berners-Lee, in his book 

How Bad are Bananas, a garden-grown apple 

has a carbon footprint of zero, compared 

to 10g of greenhouse gasses caused by one 

locally grown apple and 150g per apple for 

those New Zealand apples sold in our local 

supermarkets. British grown strawberries 

have less than a tenth of the greenhouse gas 

emissions of their imported counterparts, and 

garden-grown strawberries again have none. 

Even growing a small amount of your own 

fruit and veg can reduce your family’s carbon 

footprint significantly. 

Pre-washed and packaged salad bags are 

a convenience food that has taken over 

vegetable shelves. Each bag is linked to 3g 

of greenhouse gas emissions, as well as the 

pollution of our soils and oceans. There is 

no good way to dispose of plastic bags but 

we can use less of them! Growing your own 

lettuce leaves, rocket, herbs and salad is an

easy first step into the world of growing your 

own. And, with each harvest you enjoy, you 

reduce your plastic footprint. 

Growing fruit and vegetables is also good 

for the soul. In this time of isolation, growing 

plants provides a routine of tending, 

watering, harvesting and preparing. It gives 

individuals and families an opportunity to 

get outside and enjoy sunshine, exercise 

and activity. A glut of produce can be shared 

with neighbours and friends. Conversations 

can be had at safe distances over allotment 

boundaries or garden walls. 

If you’re tempted to try growing your own for 

the first time, some easy starter vegetables 

are salad leaves, cherry tomatoes, courgettes 

or runner beans. All of these can be grown in 

containers on a sunny balcony or in a cleared 

part of a garden.

Building history 

In the first of two articles, Dr Colin Runeckles discusses his findings 

following research into a Wanstead and Woodford Borough Council 

building survey carried out in 1949 

While I was putting together 

my January talk on ‘Building 

Wanstead’, Sue Page at the 

Heritage Centre in Redbridge Central 

Library handed me an archive box and 

wondered whether I would be interested. 

Inside was a survey carried out after WWII 

about the condition of every building in the 

Wanstead and Woodford Borough Council 

area. The area that I have so far input into a 

spreadsheet – nearly 5,500 entries – covers 

Wanstead and Snaresbrook. 

The date of the survey appears to be late 1949. 

There are no building dates after 1949, and on 

the second from last page, there is a note to 

the effect that a Ministry of Labour camp on 

Wanstead Flats is “Now redundant at 27.10.49.” 

I haven’t managed to ascertain whether 

this survey was a local initiative or part of 

a national review. Although all buildings 

have an original or rebuilding date for those 

suffering excessive bomb damage, some 

of the older dates are dubious given other 

evidence, such as building plans or where 

they appear on old maps. 

What does it tell us about the damage to 

buildings in WWII? There are 50 vacant plots 

listed due to buildings being destroyed by 

enemy action and relating to 43 houses, 

five shops and houses (49–57 High Street 

Wanstead), Park House on the corner of Blake 

Hall Road and Overton Drive that had been 

converted into flats shortly before the war, 

one block of The Shrubbery on Grosvenor 

Road, and the Isolation Hospital close to 

Wanstead Park. A further 103 buildings had 

already been fully repaired. Again, this mainly 

relates to houses, although it also includes 

one of the parts of Woodford House on the 

corner of Eagle Lane. Over 2,800 are shown 

as having “Substantial war damage repairs”,

Grosvenor Road in September 1940 

and when I eventually get to building plans 

of the post-war period, it will be interesting to 

make a comparison of the two sets of data. All 

of those fully rebuilt or showing vacant plots 

could be plotted on a map to show a more 

detailed picture of the significant areas of 

damage caused by enemy action in Wanstead. 

For example, 54 Hermon Hill is extremely close 

to houses destroyed in Sylvan Road (36–38 

and 23–25) and almost certainly due to the 

same incident. 

But there was some building carried out in 

this period – two canteens (presumably for 

workers in the underground tunnels) for 

Plessey’s were built around 1940 – one in the 

car park of The George, the other in Highstone 

Avenue. A building on the High Street shown 

on post-war maps just north of Clockhouse 

Parade is revealed in the survey to be a British 

Restaurant (communal kitchens set up by the 

Ministry of Food). 

Next month’s article will look at what the 

survey can tell us about post-war building 

developments.
