However, because of aneconomic change, social change, and city development, the canalhas decreased in importance from being the main transportation tobecoming simply the city’s drainage. In 2011, a community initiativesaw to the formation of the ‘Rak Bangprathun’ group, which meansto conserve Bangprathun. Part of the initiatives has been to setupup this project, a community learning centre.The centre serves as an area to improve the community’s vernacularknowledge, to create learning activities for the youth in the area,to be a gathering area for everyone in the community, to house anagricultural product flea market, and to be a symbol of inheritingtraditional knowledge and livelihoods of the canal gardening community.74ARCHITECTURE ASIA ISSUE 3 2018
