This multi-storey residence is a project to house all elevensiblings in a family – each with their own flat, and with an extra twoflats for common usage. The challenges were to recreate their oldchildhood house, to accommodate large communal activities suchas dining for over fifty people, and to create scattered spaces thatare respectively conducive for various age groups.A soft court of is situated in the southwest corner of the plot,and the placement of two units on each floor ensures prevailingtropical winds of the coastal region of Bangladesh and light tosufficiently enter each flat. A large indoor space that serves as amultipurpose community hall was designed in the north rooftop,which is able to accommodate large groups of people, completewith a large kitchen, toilets and a washing area.A small dormitory for family, friends and visiting relatives in thesouth part of the rooftop was designed with a water court full ofaquatic plants and fish, with an evening terrace stressed endlesslyto the horizon. Among the two common flats, one has beenplaced on the ground floor that opens to the courtyard, whilethe second common flat is located beneath the roof top communityspace. Each flat is approximately 150 sqm, and housesthree bedrooms, three toilets, a kitchen and four verandas. Theflats all share a common spatial sequence – a free-flowing livingdining-familyliving space that is connected to the courtyard andsocial interaction space, with rooms connected to semi-outdoorverandas.ARCHITECTURE ASIA ISSUE 3 201827
