SENIOR SCHOOL
Welcome
Dear Parents,
I am delighted you are considering
The Queen’s School for your daughter.
We offer a rigorous education in a stimulating
learning environment, and the results speak
for themselves. We are a Times Top 100 school
for A-level results, and girls make outstanding
academic and developmental progress across
the board, preparing them to lead and shape
the world in which they live.
But more than that, Queen’s provides a warm,
nurturing environment which will both inspire
and develop your daughter, offering exceptional
opportunities that will encourage her to embrace
challenges in order that she may achieve her absolute
best. Our goal for every Queen’s girl is that she leaves
us with the abilities to think independently,
collaborate confidently, and aspire globally.
Whilst this prospectus gives an overview on how we
approach this, to really understand what makes
Queen’s such a special place I invite you to experience
this for yourself by visiting the school. I very much
look forward to welcoming you and your daughter to
discover for yourself the benefits a Queen’s education
can offer.
Mrs S Wallace-Woodroffe
Headmistress of
The Queen’s School
“
A wonderfully empowering environment
in which girls flourish academically but
also personally.
THE GOOD SCHOOLS GUIDE
THINK INDEPENDENTLY
Imaginative
and curious
We never forget that we are helping develop
the next generation of leaders, innovators
and creators.
The best way to prepare your daughter for the
dynamic world in which we live is to develop her
creative and analytical thought processes, so honing
her ability to contribute as a can-do problem solver
and creative thinker – increasingly valuable skills in
this fast-changing world.
Girls are encouraged to believe that there is no one
‘right answer’, to take risks and put forward their own
views. They learn to offer their ideas with confidence
and not be put off by the fear of getting it wrong. Our
creative culture helps girls realise that very rarely is
anything ever perfect or finished, but that progress is
a process of being better than last time.
“
The emphasis is on sending out strong
individual women.
CURRENT PARENT
THINK INDEPENDENTLY
Brave and
creative
Whatever the subject, girls are eager
to learn and thrive on challenges.
Teaching is in small classes, led by outstanding
teachers who know their pupils, care about their
respective futures, and are empowered to develop
each girl beyond her expectations.
Their priority is to give each pupil the opportunity to
take their learning as far as possible, giving them the
best academic foundation with which to pursue their
dreams and ambitions.
Our teaching means the girls are uninhibited in their
approach to learning, willing to question and debate,
eager to speak up and express their opinions. It’s an
environment that breeds naturally ambitious thinkers
and a can-do attitude. Girls start with the premise
‘I can do that’, and then work out how.
“
The school has high academic standards,
is caring and has outstandingly brilliant staff.
CURRENT PARENT
COLLABORATE CONFIDENTLY
Motivated
and confident
Education is so much more than those things
which happen in the classroom. It is about
developing your daughter as an individual,
discovering what really excites her and
exploring where her talents lie. Our diverse
range of clubs and societies gives the girls
the opportunities to work together, lead and
develop their life-skills.
From Head Girl and Prefect duties, lunchtime
academic and creative clubs, to our peer mentoring
programme and sports leadership opportunities,
there is a vast range of positions of responsibility
enabling girls to develop their own style of leadership
and learn the most effective ways to achieve positive
results. Pupil-led committees let girls take their
first steps towards developing teamworking skills,
empowering and moulding them as future citizens.
“
The things she has done have been pretty
challenging at times but they have made
her more confident and mature.
YEAR 13 PARENT
COLLABORATE CONFIDENTLY
Resilient and
respectful
There exists at Queen’s an atmosphere of
supportive enterprise, and we work hard to
create this warm, welcoming environment
to ensure all girls feel valued and respected
members of our community.
Every girl is celebrated as an individual and valued for
her contribution in each and every area of school life.
An holistic approach is taken to girls’ development.
Self-confidence, respect for others and hard work are
key to the ethos of the school. Our focus on healthy
living, mutual respect, integrity and resilience enables
girls to succeed and thrive. Being a small school, we
are able to focus on your daughter with the right level
of support and challenge to bring out the best in her.
“
My daughter is valued and fully supported as an
individual – they go the extra mile to help.
CURRENT PARENT
ASPIRE GLOBALLY
Ambitious and
empowered
Our girls are aware of the wealth of talent that
has gone before them from mountaineers,
Olympians and TV presenters to artists,
scientists and entrepreneurs. Alumnae regularly
return for talks and visits and pupils benefit
enormously from their knowledge, experiences
and expertise.
Our innovative Virtual Boardroom equips each Senior
School girl with experiences of business projects with
industry mentors and our Virtual Classroom links to
classes across the world, offering a global perspective
on learning. Our Environmental Warrior initiative offers
opportunities to participate in charitable work and
partnerships in other countries.
We focus on language-learning and cultural
understanding and Queen’s is the only independent
school in the North of England to be awarded the
coveted accolade of being designated a Confucius
Classroom which encourages an appreciation of both
Chinese language and culture.
“
If you have the opportunity to send your
daughter to this school it will be the best
money you ever spend.
YEAR 11 PARENT
ASPIRE GLOBALLY
Responsible and
compassionate
Many of the jobs young people will enjoy in the
future do not yet exist, and we consider it vital to
develop skills which will transfer easily to varied
career paths.
Our curriculum enrichment programme offers a wealth
of choice of academic clubs, competitions and trips, with
valuable opportunities to mix with boys and girls from other
schools and organisations. This wide range of opportunities
helps the girls to grow and develop.
At Queen’s your daughter is encouraged to be aware of
and understand her responsibilities in the wider world.
Awareness and compassion are developed through
involvement in community and charity projects, both
locally and worldwide.
Whether raising money for charity through a sponsored run
or building a new school in Borneo, girls are instilled with a
desire to want to make the world a better place.
“
As the academic environment at Queen’s is a given –
(the school) is especially keen for the girls to have
fun, throw themselves into their extra-curricular
and develop skills they will need in the workplace.
THE GOOD SCHOOLS GUIDE
SIXTH FORM
Prepared
and excited
Every year Queen’s girls achieve some of the best
A-level results in the country and go on to study
at prestigious universities and on very competitive
courses both in the UK and abroad.
Our Sixth Form curriculum, The Queen’s School Baccalaureate,
introduces a university-style learning experience that is tailored
to your daughter’s career and higher education ambitions. It
combines rigorous scholarship, beyond A-level expectations,
with experience and training in research and presentation.
Whilst all options are kept open when discussing each girl’s
future, we encourage them to aim high and the vast majority
do choose to go to university.
Wherever your daughter’s passions or interests lie, Queen’s
Sixth Form will enable her to grow and develop as an individual
ready to take the next step in life with complete confidence.

Admissions
process
It is important to be sure you are making
the right decision in sending your daughter
to Queen’s. We know that girls and their
families find it beneficial to visit the school
to experience it for themselves.
With this in mind we provide a number of
opportunities throughout the year to visit and meet
the Head, teachers and current pupils. We make these
opportunities as interactive and informal as possible
and they include our annual open events plus visits
and tours which can be arranged at your convenience.
Our aim is to make your daughter’s transition into
Queen’s as easy as possible. We also hold regular
activity days to give girls a taste of life at the school
and the opportunity to meet other candidates.
The entrance examination is held in January of the
year of school entry. This may sound daunting, but our
applicants tell us they actually enjoyed the day and
leave us buzzing with excitement!
Please contact our Admissions Manager who is
happy to discuss admissions procedures with families
at any time. Telephone 01244 312078 or email
