OPEN FRAME AWARD
Since its shift to Virtual Reality and spherical cinema in 2018, the Open Frame Award has continued to experiment with new forms and media formats. We see this as a mutual learning process: Each year we as a festival promote and create better visibility for Central and Eastern European VR projects in the world and among “traditional” filmmakers, but we also encounter creators who teach us to expand the horizons of the medium, both creatively and technically. This learning curve is best surmounted by physical collaboration during the festival week, when filmmakers, VR creators, jury members and audiences meet and find a common understanding of where the road is leading us. However, now this process is interrupted by the need to flatten the curve of the Covid-19 pandemic, which makes it impossible to meet in person. The mere fact that a project belongs to the genre of Virtual Reality does not mean that you can easily present it virtually, as the main achievement of VR projects is the creation of a different form of reality. But the experimental nature of our award and the lessons we have learned from participants of past editions, who are fearlessly moving into the unknown, give us the motivation to do as much as we can. So, even though we won’t be able to stand on the stage of the Caligari cinema to award the winner or to watch films in its comfortable seats, we are going to bring the Caligari to a much wider audience. With the help of our partners and former Open Frame Award winners, we have recreated our landmark venue in virtual reality and will be holding most of our VR activities there. We invite the jury, as well as professionals from much more distant places than we are usually able to reach with our efforts, to experience the works and meet the creators. In the end, the Open Frame Award will be given out, once again funded and endowed with 5.000 euros in prize money by BHF BANK Foundation and Adolf und Luisa Haeuser- Stiftung für Kunst und Kulturpflege. Georgy Molodtsov, Kurator des Open Frame Award I hope that we are moving closer to making great VR storytelling more accessible and popular, especially under the current circumstances. We are not taking this step out of desperation with the intention of moving back to the old format next year. Instead we want to create a new combination of hybrid online and offline events, which might become the “new normal” in this new world - a world that will definitely keep on changing.
