19-Situation geschrieben.
All of the following words of welcome were
written before the recent developments in the
Covid-19 situation.

GOEAST-SCHIRMHERR
Zum 20. Mal blicken wir
in diesem Jahr nach Osten:
Deutschlandpremieren von
bedeutenden aktuellen Filmen
aus Mittel- und Osteuropa im
Wettbewerb – und in der Sektion
Bioskop ein buntes Programm
aus Festival-Hits und besonderen
filmischen Werken, die viele
Facetten des Filmschaffens jener
mehr als 30 Länder zeigen, die
vor knapp 30 Jahren durch den
Eisernen Vorhang brutal von
„unserem“ Teil der Welt getrennt
waren. Damals konzipierte das
DFF – Deutsches Filminstitut &
Filmmuseum osteuropäische
Filmwochen und schickte sie
auf Tournee durch die Bundesrepublik,
um so Einblicke in die
weithin unbekannte Filmlandschaft
des Ostblocks zu geben.
Daraus ist goEast – Festival des
mittel- und osteuropäischen
Films geworden, wo das reine
Filmprogramm aber längst
durch Workshops, Präsentationen
und andere Aktivitäten
ergänzt wurde. Eine davon ist
das Symposium, das sich in
diesem Jahr unter dem Titel
„Filmerbe der Umbruchszeit“
mit dem Filmschaffen in der
Zeit zwischen 1985 und der
Jahrtausendwende in Mittel- und
Osteuropa befasst. Die radikalen
politischen Verwerfungen
beendeten die staatlich gesteuerte
und damit auch gesichert
finanzierte Filmproduktion,
beendet waren aber auch Zensur
und ideologische Gängelung.
Auf der Strecke zu bleiben droht
nun aber das Filmerbe dieser
Zeit, da Förderprogramme zur
Restaurierung und Digitalisierung,
wie wir sie zum Beispiel
in Deutschland, Frankreich
oder Großbritannien haben,
dort fehlen. Darum geht es
beim Symposium in Vorträgen
und Panels, daneben gibt es ein
umfassendes Filmprogramm aus
Kurz- und Langfilmen, das diese
spannende Zeit zurück auf die
Leinwand holt.
Ich wünsche den Besucherinnen
und Besuchern, den Filmschaffenden
und Kinobegeisterten
aus Ost-, Mittel- und natürlich
auch Westeuropa großartige
Filme, inspirierende Begegnungen,
neue Einsichten – und
überhaupt ein wunderbares 20.

For the 20th time, we look to
the East again this year: for
German premieres of significant
contemporary films from
Central and Eastern Europe in
the Competition – and in the
Bioscop section for a vibrant
programme of festival hits and
special cinematic works that
showcase the many facets of
filmmaking of these more than
30 countries, which were still
brutally separated from “our”
part of the world by the Iron
Curtain just about 30 years ago.
Back then, DFF – Deutsches
Filminstitut & Filmmuseum
came up with the concept for the
Eastern European Film Weeks
and toured the event throughout
the Federal Republic of Germany,
to provide insight into the
largely unknown film scenes of
the East Bloc. This evolved into
goEast – Festival of Central and
Eastern European Film, where
the initially exclusive film
programme has long since been
expanded to include workshops,
presentations and other
activities.

One of these is the Symposium,
which, under the title “Film
Heritage in Transition” this year,
aims to examine filmmaking in
Central and Eastern Europe in
the period between 1985 and the
turn of the century. The radical
political upheavals brought
an end to state-run and thus
reliably funded film production,
while they also meant the end
of censorship and ideological
patronising. However, the film
heritage of this period is now
threatened with extinction,
since these regions lack funding
programmes for restoration and
digitisation akin to the ones
we have in Germany, France
or Great Britain for instance.
These are among the issues to
be discussed in the scope of
the Symposium in lectures and
panels, alongside an extensive
film programme with short and
feature-length films that will
bring this exciting era back to
the big screen.
I would like to wish all attendees,
film guests and cinema fans
from Eastern, Central and
of course Western Europe
extraordinary film experiences,
inspiring encounters, new
insights – and in general a
wonderful 20th edition of goEast
– Festival of Central and Eastern
European Film!
