SERGEI LOZNITSA 52 Geboren 1964 in Baranovichi, wuchs er in Kiew auf. 1987 erlangte er einen Abschluss in Angewandter Mathematik. Bis 1991 arbeitete der international gefeierte Dokumentar- und Spielfilmregisseur als Wissenschaftler am renommierten Institut für Kybernetik Kiew [IKK] im Bereich der künstlichen Intelligenz. 1997 studierte er an dem Moskauer Institut für Kinematographie – VGIK und gründete 2013 die Filmproduktions- und Vertriebsfirma ATOMS & VOID. 2012 war ihm bereits die Porträtsektion von goEast gewidmet, 2019 war er zudem mit seinem Film DER PROZESS zu Gast. Born in Baranovichi, USSR, in 1964, Loznitsa grew up in Kiev. In 1987, he received a degree in applied mathematics. Until 1991, the internationally renowned director of documentaries and fiction features worked as a scientist at the Kiev Institute of Cybernetics [IKK], specializing in artificial intelligence research. In 1997, he graduated from VGIK Film Academy Moscow and launched his film production and distribution company ATOMS & VOID in 2013. In 2012 the goEast Portrait was dedicated to him and, in 2019, he took part at goEast with his archive documentary THE TRIAL. Schwarz-Weiß und Farbfilm-Aufnahmen wechseln sich ab und evozieren Gefühle, die zwischen der Distanz einer vergangenen und der verstörenden Stimmung einer gegenwärtigen Beerdigung liegen. „Der Tod ist gekommen und nun sind wir allein“, tönt es eindringlich aus den Lautsprechern. Staatsgäste aus aller Welt landen am Flugplatz, Kranz um Kranz wird getragen und niedergelegt. Stalins Unsterblichkeit wird anhand von ernstem Händeschütteln der Regierenden bekräftigt. Stalin ist tot, lang lebe Stalin! Lang lebe der Kommunismus! Scheinbar unendliche Schlangen drängen sich zu seinem Sarg und lange Trauermärsche wandern durch das Land. Mithilfe des umfassenden Archivmaterials hat Sergei Loznitsa durch seine Montage ein besonderes Zeitdokument geschaffen, welches den Blick des Publikums auf den schmalen Grat zwischen Leben und Tod in einer überinszenierten Realität lenkt. Der Film lädt ein zum Nachdenken über Manipulation und Täuschung, gefühlte Normalität und groteske Scharade. Black-and-white and colour images alternate, evoking emotions that lie between distance to a bygone burial and the unsettling mood of a contemporaneous one. “Death has come and now we are alone”, as the haunting message emanating from the public address system drones. Guests of state from all over the world land at the airport, wreath after wreath is carried and set down in commemoration. Stalin’s immortality is reinforced by the earnest handshakes of the ruling class. Stalin is dead, long live Stalin! Long live Communism! Seemingly endless lines press forward to his coffin and long funeral marches wind their way through the nation. Bolstered by extensive archival materials and his own adept editing, Sergei Loznitsa has created a special testimony to a singular moment in time that allows the viewer to perceive the fine line between life and death in an over-mediated reality.
