Dieser Virus hat sehr viele Menschen arbeitslos
gemacht. Wir Filmkritiker und -kritikerinnen sind da
vergleichsweise fein heraus: Wir können Filme sehen,
wenn schon nicht auf der großen Leinwand, dann eben
auf dem kleinen Monitor. Und wir können über Filme
schreiben, wenn schon nicht in unseren gewohnten
Zeitungen und Zeitschriften, dann eben auf den
Filmseiten im Internet. Eine der Erfahrungen, die wir
alle machen, ist, dass die realen Grenzen enger und
dichter geworden sind, und dass das öffentliche Leben
aus der Öffentlichkeit so gut wie verschwunden ist –
dass das Internet aber soziale Kontakte weiterführt und
vielleicht sogar vertieft (wenn schon nicht real, dann
eben virtuell). Natürlich gehören Filme auf die große
Leinwand (gerade bei einem Festival), natürlich macht
es weniger Spaß, sie auf dem Laptop oder Tablet zu
sehen. Aber dort sind sie wenigstens zu sehen. Für viele
Filmemacher und Filmemacherinnen ist dies wichtig,
eine Chance, künstlerisch zu überleben. Ums Überleben
geht es zur Zeit, in jeder Hinsicht. goEast auch online
stattfinden zu lassen, wenigstens teilweise, ist nicht
einfach und erfordert Mut und Erfahrung (und ein Budget).
Glückwunsch an Heleen Gerritsen und ihr Team, dass
sie sich auf dieses Experiment einlassen – damit für uns
die Grenzen zum Osten, die von kleinmütigen Politikern
und Politikerinnen aufgebaut wurden, wieder abgebaut
werden. Glückwunsch, und viel Glück.

This virus has cost a whole lot of people their jobs. We
film critics are relatively well off in comparison: we can
watch films, if not on the big screen then at least on a
little monitor instead. And we can write about films, if not
in the newspapers and periodicals we’re used to, then
at least on film sites on the Internet. One of the things
that all of us are experiencing is that real boundaries
have gotten tighter and denser, and that public life has
all but vanished from public – but that the Internet also
extends social contacts and maybe even deepens them
(if not “for real”, then at least virtually). Of course, films
belong on the big screen (especially when it comes to
festivals), of course it’s less fun to watch them on a
laptop or tablet. But at least we can watch them at all.
For many filmmakers, this is important, it’s a chance to
survive artistically. At the moment, it’s all about survival,
in every regard. It’s also not easy to have goEast take
place online, at least partially, it requires courage and
experience (and a budget). Congratulations to Heleen
Gerritsen and her team for being willing to embrace this
experiment – so that the borders to the East put up by
timid politicians can be taken down again for us. Bravo,
