Der goEast Wettbewerb steht im Mittelpunkt des Festivals und ist mit sechzehn Langfilmen dessen umfangreichste Sektion. Er spiegelt das Filmschaffen Mittel- und Osteuropas in seinem großen Facettenreichtum mit Filmen aus 19 Produktionsländern wider. Die Filme haben die Chance auf von einer fünfköpfigen internationalen Jury verliehene Preise: die „Goldene Lilie“ für den Besten Film, den Preis der Landeshauptstadt Wiesbaden für die Beste Regie sowie den Preis für Kulturelle Vielfalt des Auswärtigen Amtes. Zudem werden zwei FIPRESCI-Preise der internationalen Filmkritik vergeben. Erstmals gibt es in diesem Jahr anlässlich des 20-jährigen Jubiläums von goEast auch einen Publikumspreis, der durch eine lokale Crowdfunding-Kampagne finanziert wurde. Im April 2020 wurde die Entscheidung getroffen, das gesamte goEast-Preisgeld unter den Filmschaffenden des Wettbewerbs aufzuteilen, als Zeichen der Solidarität während der Covid-19-bedingten Krise, die die Kulturbranche in ganz Europa stark getroffen hat. Einzig der mit 1.500 Euro dotierte Publikumspreis wird im Rahmen der Screenings des goEast Wettbewerbs beim exground filmfest im November verliehen. The goEast Competition is the centrepiece of the festival, and is, with sixteen feature-length films, also its most substantial section. It reflects the rich diversity of filmmaking in Central and Eastern Europe with works from 19 production countries. The films have the opportunity to win prizes determined by a five-member international jury: the Golden Lily for Best Film, the Award of the City of Wiesbaden for Best Director as well as the Award of the Federal Foreign Office for Cultural Diversity. In addition, a dedicated jury representing FIPRESCI presents two International Film Critic’s Awards. To mark the occasion of goEast’s twentieth anniversary edition, this year for the first time ever the festival will also feature an audience award, made possible by a local crowdfunding campaign. In April 2020 goEast decided to divide the prize money equally among all filmmakers in its competition, as a sign of solidarity during the crisis caused by Covid-19, which heavily affected the creative industries all over Europe. Only the Audience Award, endowed with 1.500 euros in prize money, will be presented to a film in the scope of the goEast Competition screenings at exground filmfest in November.
