Claudia Dillmann, the former
director, and I were neighbours,
and we often viewed films
together. On the “porn couch”.
Back then, I owned a blue
two-person sofa, the cheapest
sofa-bed that IKEA has ever
featured in their inventory. And
it played a crucial role in a film,
namely in Lukas Moodysson’s
A HOLE IN MY HEART. The film
is about two guys who make
amateur porn films – basically
on my couch, at least on the same
model. That’s why I call it that.
So, we always sat on this couch,
Claudia and I, armed with pizza
and beer and a couple VHS tapes
for the evening. From time to
time, one of our heads tilted
back, a sure sign of a partial
absence. (…) “Sleeping in the
cinema is a display of trust in the
film,” as the famous saying goes
among cinephiles. Well, the same
applied for the couch, because
you could always trust that the
other person would catch the
part you missed.
Around 600 films open in
theatres each year in Germany.
Who’s supposed to watch all of
that? The sheer number doesn’t
say anything at all about the
range though. Besides the 20%
that are domestic productions,
the USA dominates of course, and
from the other cinema nations
works from Great Britain and
France manage to make it into
theatres. Films from Russia,
Hungary or North Macedonia
only make it if they were
realised by a famous director
or one with an established
reputation. That’s why we need
goEast: because no one else
shows films from Central and
Eastern Europe.

Ein Wahn aus Bild, Ton und
Maschinen. goEast ist wichtig,
weil das Festival zeigt, dass die
Nähe zwischen Ost und West sich
nicht in Metern misst.
Andrzej Żuławski’s DIABEŁ is
rolling on 35mm, the window is
open, the moon is up outside. An
insanely hot night. Feverish, I
insert the next reel, in order not
to miss anything. A delirium of
images, sounds and machines.
goEast is important because the
festival shows that the proximity
between East and West cannot be
measured in metres.
