Mit goEast werde ich wohl
immer die lebendigen Nächte
damals noch in der Villa
Clementine verbinden, wo wir in
internationaler Runde bis in die
Morgenstunden intensiv über
Filme, Politik und das Leben
diskutiert, getanzt, gelacht
und manchmal auch gesungen
haben. Und natürlich unser
hochengagiertes Dreier-Dream-Team:
Swetlana Sikora,
Karin Schyle und ich.
Das Kino aus Mittel- und
Osteuropa ist heute auch im
Westen präsenter als zu meiner
Zeit, Plattformen für Begegnung
brauchen wir dagegen weiterhin
dringend. Das Konzept, einen
ästhetischen Anspruch an
Filmkunst mit der immer wieder
neu auszuhandelnden Idee von
einem gemeinsamen Europa
zu verbinden, gemeinsam
laut gegen nationalistische
Tendenzen zu sein und für eine
Solidargemeinschaft zu streiten,
das verdient jede Unterstützung.
What I will definitely always
associate with goEast are the
vibrant nights in Villa Clementine
back then, where we, an
international crew, hung out till
morning intensively discussing
films, politics and life in general,
dancing, laughing and sometimes
even singing too. And of
course our super dedicated trio
dream team: Swetlana Sikora,
Karin Schyle and I.
Cinema from Central and
Eastern Europe is also more
present today in the West than it
was in my day, although we are
still in urgent need of platforms
for encounters. The concept of
connecting an aesthetically high
level of cinematic art with the
idea of a shared Europe (which
has to be renegotiated afresh
on a constant basis), speaking
up loud and clear together in
opposition to nationalistic
tendencies and fighting for a
community based on solidarity
– that is worthy of any and all
support.

In den zehn Jahren, in denen
ich bei goEast war, haben
sich natürlich sehr viele tolle
Erinnerungen und Geschichten
angesammelt, am intensivsten
erinnere ich mich aber an den
Vulkanausbruch auf Island zum
10-jährigen Jubiläum von goEast.
Durch die anschließenden
Flugverbote über Europa ist
da einiges in Gefahr geraten.
Doch wir hatten damals tolle
Partner/innen, die z.B. unseren
Jurypräsidenten mit dem Shuttle
aus Warschau abholten und wir
hatten fantastische Gäste, die
sich bis zu 28 Stunden in den Zug
setzten, um gemeinsam mit uns
ein fantastisches Jubiläum zu
feiern.
Um die Bedeutsamkeit von
goEast zu bewerten, muss man
ja nur auf das Weltgeschehen
blicken. So wie es scheint, ist
die Zivilgesellschaft mehr
denn je gefordert, für Frieden
und Freiheit einzustehen. Das
ist es schließlich auch, was
goEast sich von Beginn an auf
die Fahne geschrieben hat. Seit
nun 20 Jahren leistet goEast
wertvolle Beiträge, nicht nur zur
Völkerverständigung, sondern
bezieht Stellung gegen jegliche
xenophoben Denk- und Verhaltensmuster.
In the ten years that I was with
goEast, I built up a huge store
of great memories and stories
of course – my most intense
memory though is of the volcano
eruption on Iceland coinciding
with the 10-year anniversary
edition of goEast. The resulting
flight bans over Europe put
quite a few things in jeopardy.
Luckily, we had great partners
back then that did things like
fetching our jury president from
Warsaw with a shuttle, and we
had fantastic guests, who sat on
trains for up to 28 hours in order
to come celebrate an incredible
anniversary together with us.
To appreciate the significance of
goEast, one need only take a look
at what’s happening around the
world. It seems that civil society
is called upon more than ever
to take a stand for peace and
freedom. And in the end that is
also the banner that goEast took
up from the very beginning. For
20 years now, goEast has been
making valuable contributions,
not only to the understanding
between nations, but also
by taking a stand against all
manifestations of xenophobic
thinking and behavioural
patterns.
