Ein ereignisreicher Sommer in Lettland 1989: Die
Schwestern Paula und Laura aus Riga besuchen
ihre Cousinen Maija und Linda auf dem Land.
Während ihre Tante meist abwesend ist, richten
sich die vier Kinder ein Refugium ein, genießen
ihre Freiheit und spielen das Leben von Erwachsenen.
Doch die private und politische Realität
bricht immer wieder in das erschaffene Idyll ein.
Am Ende des Films steht der große historische
Moment: der Baltische Weg. Die Menschen
Lettlands, Litauens und Estlands reichen sich am
23. August die Hände und bilden eine rund 600
Kilometer lange Kette, um sich gemeinsam von der
Sowjetunion loszusagen. (ds)
An eventful summer in Latvia in 1989: sisters
Paula and Laura from Riga visit their cousins
Maija and Linda out in the countryside. While
their aunt is gone most of the time, the four children
create a sort of refuge, where they enjoy their
freedom and play at being adults. Alas, private and
political realities keep intruding into the idyllic
world they’ve carved out for themselves. At the
end of the film, a great moment in history unfolds:
the Baltic Way. The people of Latvia, Lithuania and
Estonia join hands on August 23 to form a human
chain running some 600 kilometres, to break free
from the Soviet Union together.
