durch „Shanghai“, ein verarmtes
Viertel vor den Toren Bakus.
Unmittelbar vor den Hauseingängen
quetschen sich die
Güterzüge zur Hochglanz-
Metropole durch. Bald sollen
die Behausungen abgerissen
werden. In den letzten Tagen
Shanghais dreht der deutsche
Regisseur Veit Helmer hier mit
Schauspieler Miki Manojlović
seinen Spielfilm VOM LOKFÜH-
RER, DER DIE LIEBE SUCHTE….
Doch anders als die Filmcrew ist
Dokumentaristin Leyli Gafarova
an den Menschen interessiert,
die hier (noch) leben. (tg)
A single railroad track cuts
through “Shanghai”, a poor
district on the outskirts of Baku.
Freight trains squeeze their way
through the neighbourhood,
right up against the doorsteps,
on their way to the glossy
metropolis. The buildings are
marked for demolition in the
very near future. In the last days
of Shanghai, German director
Veit Helmer shoots his feature
film THE BRA, starring Miki
Manojlović. Alas, unlike the rest
of the film crew, documentarian
Leyli Gafarova is interested in
learning about the people who
(still) live here.

Im Stile des Direct Cinema
schildert der Film den Kampf
um das Kulturzentrum Salaam
Cinema in Baku: 2019 dringen
während eines Workshops
Arbeiter in das denkmalgeschützte
Gebäude ein, um es
abzureißen. Daraufhin besetzen
die Kulturschaffenden die Spielstätte
zunächst friedlich – doch
als das Gebäude gestürmt wird,
kommt es zu Handgemengen und
Diskussionen. Es ist der Versuch,
den Ort als schöpferischen Platz
für die Selbstbestimmung einer
Filmszene zu bewahren. Salaam
Cinema ist die Hauptspielstätte
von DokuBaku. (tw)
Shot in the style of direct
cinema, this film depicts the
fight to save the Salaam Cinema
cultural centre in Baku. In 2019,
while a workshop was being
held, workers forced entry into
the listed building with the
intention of tearing it down. In
response, a group of cultural
workers occupied the venue
peacefully at first – however,
when the building was stormed,
the conflict escalated, with physical
confrontations and heated
arguments. The activists’ efforts
are an attempt to preserve the
location as a creative place for
the self-determination of a film
scene. Salaam Cinema is the
primary venue for DokuBaku.
