Mitte der 90er Jahre wird der Sohn des slowakischen
Präsidenten Michal Kováč entführt. Der an
der Aktion beteiligte Oskar F. setzt sich ab und
packt aus; sein Freund Robo stirbt wenig später
bei einem Attentat. Bis heute spaltet der Fall die
slowakische Gesellschaft. Als die Beteiligung
des Geheimdienstes zunehmend offenbar wird,
propagiert Premierminister Vladimír Mečiar: All
das sei schlichtweg „nie passiert“. Regisseurin
Barbora Berezňáková tritt den Gegenbeweis an,
findet Fotos, Archivmaterial, Orte des Geschehens
und zentrale Figuren. Ihr Film bietet sowohl einen
emotionalen Zugang als auch innovativen Stil. (tg)
Oleg Sentsov ist endlich frei! Sein neuestes Werk
inszenierte der profilierte Aktivist und Regisseur
aber noch aus dem Gefängnis. Unter Arrest scheinen
auch seine nur durch Zahlen identifizierten
Figuren zu existieren. In einer kargen Betonkonstruktion
führen die Nummern Eins bis Zehn ihr
Leben unter den strengen Augen der bewaffneten
„Richter“ und halten sich an Regeln, die ihnen
ihre Gottheit, die Nummer Null, vom Balkon
herunterdiktiert. Doch Freiheitsdrang sowie das
plötzliche Auftauchen eines Kindes, das nichts auf
die Vorschriften gibt, bringen die Ordnung der
künstlich beschränkten Welt ins Wanken. (tg)

In the mid-1990s, the son of Slovak president
Michal Kováč is kidnapped. One of the perpetrators,
Oskar F., defects and confesses publicly – his
friend Robo is assassinated shortly thereafter.
The case has continued to polarise Slovak society
into the present. As the state intelligence service’s
involvement becomes increasingly clear, Prime
Minister Vladimír Mečiar proclaims the whole
thing simply “never happened”. Setting out to
present evidence to the contrary, Director Barbora
Berezňáková manages to unearth photographs,
archival materials, associated locations and central
figures. Her film offers both emotional access
to the story and an innovative stylistic approach.

Oleg Sentsov is finally free! However, the high-profile
activist and filmmaker staged his most recent
work while still in prison. His characters, identified
only by numbers, seem to be under arrest
too. In an austere concrete structure, individuals
number one to number ten lead their lives under
the watchful eyes of armed “judges” and follow
the rules that their god, number zero, dictates to
them from the balcony above. Alas, the desire for
freedom and the sudden appearance of a child
who doesn’t care about the regulations threaten to
fracture the order of this artificially constrictive
world.
