Ein Priester wird zu einer
Segnung gerufen. Doch beim
Gebet am Sterbebett und den
Gesprächen in der Küche steht
nicht mehr die Sterbende
im Mittelpunkt, sondern
persönliche Befindlichkeiten
der Trauernden: Der intime
Umgang mit dem Tod birgt stets
Konfliktpotential. Im Büro der
Kirchengemeinde angekommen,
offenbart sich diese selbst nur
als ein Wirtschaftszweig. Auch
der Tod ist durchökonomisiert.

A priest is summoned to perform
a blessing. Alas, during deathbed
prayers and conversations in
the kitchen, the focus shifts from
the dying woman to the personal
sensitivities of the grieving
relatives. An intimate encounter
with death always harbours
potential for conflict. Back in the
parish office, the congregation
itself is revealed as nothing but
another business unit. Death too
has been thoroughly economized
it seems.

Es ist Abend und die neunjährige
Sofia wird von ihrem Großvater
ins Bett gebracht. Doch aus der
Wohnung nebenan kommen
die verzweifelten Schreie einer
Mutter, während der Großvater
mit seinen Gästen über den
Selbstmord von deren Sohn
diskutiert. In einer Plansequenz
fängt Radu Jude die Neugier von
Sofia ein, die im abgedunkelten
Zimmer nicht aufhören kann,
den Schreien und der Diskussion
zu lauschen und es allmählich
mit der Angst zu tun bekommt.

It’s evening, time for grandpa to
put nine-year-old Sofia to bed.
Alas, a mother’s distraught cries
ring out from the flat next door,
while the grandfather discusses
her son’s suicide with his guests.
In a continuous shot, Radu
Jude captures Sofia’s curiosity:
inside the darkened room she
can’t help eavesdropping on the
lamenting and discussion, as
her fear gradually grows more
intense.

Volksgerichtshof zum Tode
verurteilt. Die Erschießung
Antonescus und seiner Kumpane
filmt der Kameramann Ovidiu
Gologan in eindrücklichen
Schwarzweiß-Bildern. 1994
stellt der Filmemacher Sergiu
Nicolaescu die Szenerie für
seinen Spielfilm THE MIRROR
nach. Radu Jude konfrontiert
beide Sichtweisen auf die
Exekution miteinander. (ds)
On May 17, 1946, the dictator Ion
Antonescu is sentenced to death
by a people’s court. Cameraman
Ovidiu Gologan films the death
by firing squad of Antonescu and
his cronies in haunting blackand-white.
In 1994, filmmaker
Sergiu Nicolaescu reconstructs
the scenes for his fiction feature
THE MIRROR. Radu Jude’s short
film sets up a confrontation
between the two perspectives of
the execution.
