(ds) Following on the heels of his examination of Romanian anti-Semitism, Radu Jude travels back in his most recent work to the era of dictatorship under Nicolae Ceaușescu. Within what amounts to a sort of stage setting, he presents the story of the adolescent Mugur Călinescu, a young man who gradually became a target of the Securitate for the regime-critical slogans he spread by writing them on walls. Jude reconstructs the case with the aid of the secret police’s own files. Through the juxtaposition of these staged scenes with contemporary archival footage drawn from the period in question, a blending of the private and public occurs. In so doing, the film succeeds in laying bare the brutality of state repression. 124 Screenplay Radu Jude Camera Marius Panduru Co-Production Editor Cătălin Cristuţiu Endorfilm, Czech Republic Sound Dana Bunescu, Jean KLAS Film, Bulgaria Umansky, Cristinel Șirli Komplizen Film, Germany Producer Ada Solomon Les Films d’ici, France Co-Producers Claire Dornoy, Janine Jackowski, Jiří Konečný, Jonas TVR, Romania Dornbach, Maren Ade, Rossitsa ZDF/ARTE, Germany Valkanova, Serge Lalou Rights/Sales Cast Ioana Iacob, Alexandru Dabija, Beta Cinema, Germany Alex Bogdan beta@betacinema.com Production Hi Film Productions, Romania ada@hifilm.ro German Distribution Grandfilm GmbH, Germany verleih@grandfilm.de Screenplay Gianina Cărbunariu, Radu Jude Camera Marius Panduru Editor Cătălin Cristuţiu Sound Dana Bunescu, Jean Umansky Producer Ada Solomon Cast Bogdan Zamfir, Șerban Lazarovici, Ioana Iacob, Șerban Pavlu Production microFilm, Romania ada.solomon@gmail.com Co-Production Hi Film Productions, Romania Romanian Public Television, Romania Rights/Sales Best Friend Forever, Belgium sales@bffsales.eu
THE TUBE WITH A HAT LAMPA CU CĂCIULĂ Radu Jude Romania 2005 24 min, DCP, colour / OV + eng SUB Am Sonntagabend läuft ein Bruce Lee-Film, doch der Fernseher ist kaputt. (ds) There’s a Bruce Lee film on Sunday night, but the TV’s broken. Seven-year-old Marian reminds his dad of the promise he made: together they wrap the device up in a blanket and set off on the difficult journey to reach a repairman in the nearest town. It’s a true odyssey undertaken by a modern Sisyphus, but in the end, though the picture may be shaky, an image lights up the screen. (ds) In the wee hours of the morning, taxi driver Sorin picks up fortyyear-old Cecilia in Jilava. It takes a little while for the ice to break, but in the vehicle’s interior an atmosphere of intimacy begins to grow on the road to Bucharest. Cecilia tells of her affair with a man in Jilava and Sorin talks about his sick mother. In the end, the two arrive back at the place they originally set out from together: it’s as if nothing really happened, though a new day has dawned. (ds) During an outing with his daughter Alexandra, Tavi notices that she no longer calls him papa. Back in her mother’s flat, Tavi confronts his ex-partner: positions of power are exploited and wounded egos are indulged at Alexandra’s expense, while she remains the only voice of reason. An adept staging and exploration of family conflict, which Radu Jude would later carry to the extreme in his feature-film EVERYBODY IN OUR FAMILY.
