Wie Don Quijote mit Sancho Panza reiten der
Gendarm Costandin und sein Sohn Ionita durch
die Weiten der Walachei, um den entlaufenen Leibeigenen
Carfin ausfindig zu machen. Die Handlung,
die 1835 als absurder Western im rumänischen
Niemandsland beginnt, wirft Fragen nach der
Akzeptanz Anderer in der damaligen genauso wie
in der heutigen Gesellschaft auf. Langsam kommt
Empathie mit den Hauptfiguren auf und die sich
entspinnende Vater-Sohn-Geschichte wird zu einer
Parabel der Menschlichkeit. Ohne Sentimentalität
und historisch fundiert widmet sich der Film
Themen wie Frauenfeindlichkeit, Antiziganismus
und Antisemitismus. (rp)
Like Don Quixote flanked by Sancho Panza, the
gendarme Costandin and his son Ionita ride
through the vast steppes of Walachia, on the
trail of the run-away bondsman Carfin. The film,
which begins in 1835 as an absurd Western set in
a Romanian no man’s land, poses questions about
the acceptance of others in society both back then
and now. Little by little, the main characters earn
our empathy and the unfolding father-son story
becomes a parable on what it means to be human.
Without sentimentality and with its feet firmly
planted in historical fact, AFERIM! tackles topics
such as misogyny, anti-ziganism and anti-Semitism
with aplomb.

DIE TOTE NATION dokumentiert „Fragmente
paralleler Leben“ der Jahre 1937 bis 1946 in
Rumänien. Projiziert werden eindrückliche, oft
wunderschöne, detaillierte Porträts der einfachen
ländlichen Bevölkerung, festgehalten von „Fotostudio
Splendid“ im Südosten des Landes. Dazu sind
Tagebucheinträge des jüdischen Bukarester Arztes
Emil Dorian zu hören – vorgetragen von Radu Jude
selbst. Dazwischen lassen Radioausschnitte und
nationalistische Lieder der Zeit den zunehmenden
Antisemitismus erahnen, den Dorian am eigenen
Leib erfährt und den Zeugenberichte bestätigen.

THE DEAD NATION documents “Fragments of
Parallel Lives” from the period of 1937 to 1946
in Romania. The film shows striking, detailed
and often beautiful portraits of the simple rural
population, captured by “Fotostudio Splendid” in
the country’s southeast region. Parallel to these
projections one hears diary entries from the
Jewish Bucharest resident and doctor Emil Dorian,
read by Radu Jude himself. In between, excerpts
from radio broadcasts and nationalistic songs
from the era allow one to begin to fathom the
anti-Semitism that Dorian experiences first hand
and through the reports of eyewitnesses.
