Das Anliegen des goEast
Filmfestival ist es, eine
grenzüberschreitende Plattform
für den Film aus Mittel- und
Osteuropa zu schaffen. Um
eine zeitgemäße und lebendige
Plattform bleiben zu können,
nimmt das Festival regelmäßig
neue Formate in sein Programm
auf, wenn diese für die künstlerische
und inhaltliche Auseinandersetzung
in der Filmkunst
an Bedeutung gewonnen haben.
Eine dieser Veränderungen war
vor zwei Jahren die Umwidmung
des Open Frame Awards für
Virtual-Reality- und 360°-Werke.
Für die BHF BANK Stiftung und
die mit ihr gemeinsam fördernde
Adolf und Luisa Haeuser Stiftung
für Kunst und Kulturpflege ist
dieses Format eine spannende
Entwicklung. Der Open Frame
Award ist mit 5.000 Euro der am
höchsten dotierte Wettbewerb
für Virtual-Reality-Formate in
Europa und richtet sich nicht
nur explizit an den filmischen
Nachwuchs, den die beiden
Stiftungen unterstützen wollen,
sondern fordert zudem die
Kreativen heraus, ihre Themen
eindrucksvoll mit der neuesten
Medientechnik zu erzählen.
Beide Stiftungen unterstützen
also zugleich das Experiment,
den nicht abgesicherten Versuch,
neue Wege und Sichtweisen zu
erproben. Auch dies entspricht
dem gemeinnützigen Auftrag der
kunstfördernden Stiftungen.
Bereits nach den zwei bisherigen
Ausgaben des Open Frame
Awards mit Virtual Reality und
360°-Werken lässt sich allerdings
feststellen, dass dieses Format
kein Wagnis mehr ist, denn
längst hat es sich erfolgreich
etabliert. Die Ausstellung der
Wettbewerbsbeiträge bei goEast
2019 hat über 4000 Besucher/
innen angezogen. Zudem wurden
für den diesjährigen Open
Frame Award ca. 500 Projekte
für den Wettbewerb eingereicht,
was eindrucksvoll zeigt, welche
große Resonanz dieser Preis in
der Filmbranche gefunden hat.
Den jungen Filmemacher/innen,
den Organisator/innen
von goEast und dem Publikum
in Wiesbaden und Frankfurt
wünschen wir deshalb viele
spannende Filmerlebnisse,
anregende Diskussionen und
erfolgreiche Festivaltage.

The mission of goEast Film Festival
is to create a boundary-crossing
platform for cinema from
Central and Eastern Europe. In
order to remain a contemporary
and vital platform, the festival
has regularly incorporated new
formats into its programme as
they have grown in significance
for artistic and thematic
exploration in the cinematic
arts. One of these changes was
the re-conception of the Open
Frame Award two years ago as
a space for Virtual Reality and
360° works.
For the BHF BANK Foundation
and our funding partner the
Adolf und Luisa Haeuser Stiftung
für Kunst und Kulturpflege, this
format represents an exciting
development. With its 5.000 euro
prize, the Open Frame Award is
the most generously endowed
competition for virtual reality
formats in Europe. In addition,
not only is it explicitly addressed
to emerging film artists, whom
the two foundations wish to
support – it also challenges
these creatives to convey their
subject matter in an impressive
manner using the newest
media technology. Thus, both
foundations are at the same time
supporting them in exploring
experimentation, trials without
a safety net, and new paths
and perspectives. This is also
a good fit with the charitable
mission of these art-supporting
foundations.
After the successful realisation
of the two previous editions of
the Open Frame Award featuring
Virtual Reality and 360° works,
we can already attest that this
format is not a daring gamble
any longer, for it has long since
established itself. The exhibition
of the entries to the competition
at goEast 2019 attracted over
4000 visitors. In addition,
around 500 projects were
submitted to the competition for
this year’s Open Frame Award,
an impressive testament to the
great resonance that this prize
has experienced in the film
industry.
For these reasons, we would like
to wish the young filmmakers,
the organisers at goEast and
the audience many exciting
film experiences, stimulating
discussions and a successful
festival week.
