(tg) A crew of German construction workers is tasked with building a hydroelectric power plant in the Bulgarian countryside – no simple assignment. The men consciously keep their distance from the locals, while interacting amongst themselves in a rough but affectionate manner. Only Meinhard, the newbie in the group, gets to know the people in the nearby village – during his rambling forays atop a free-range horse – only he displays an interest in their lives and gradually opens up to them himself. Valeska Grisebach draws on visual tropes from the Western genre to conduct a deeply sensitive examination of diverse experiential worlds and conceptions of masculinity. (jp) When a law is passed in Hungary declaring mixed-breed dogs undesirables and rendering their owners subject to high fines, Lili’s father is so upset that he decides to abandon her dog Hagen. This marks the beginning of an incredible journey for the former pet, one that leads from the dangerous life on the streets and shady animal dealers all the way to the world of dogfighting, before Hagen and a pack of other disgraced fourlegged friends finally strike back by taking control of Budapest. WHITE GOD functions both as a parable of xenophobic currents in our society and as a gripping fantasy thriller. The film was realised without special effects and with an ensemble cast of several hundred canines.
