Marek Edelman (1919–2009) war einer der letzten<br />
Überlebenden des Aufstands im Warschauer<br />
Ghetto und fragte sich zu Lebzeiten oft, warum<br />
die Liebe im Ghetto nie thematisiert werde.<br />
Jolanta Dylewska hat dies kurz vor Edelmans Tod<br />
nachgeholt und zusammen mit dem mittlerweile<br />
verstorbenen Altmeister Andrzej Wajda einen<br />
einfühlsamen Film inszeniert. In ausgiebigen<br />
Passagen erzählt Edelman von Liebesgeschichten<br />
aus dem Ghetto, die Dylewska in poetische<br />
Bilder kleidet und virtuos mit Archivmaterial<br />
kombiniert. Ein Film über die Kraft der Liebe, die<br />
es auch in dunklen Zeiten vermag – zumindest<br />
für Augenblicke – Sicherheit und Geborgenheit zu<br />

One of the last survivors of the Warsaw ghetto<br />
revolt, Marek Edelman (1919–2009) often asked<br />
himself over the course of his life why the theme<br />
of love in the ghetto was never properly treated.<br />
Shortly before Edelman’s death, Jolanta Dylewska<br />
sought to rectify this by creating an empathetic<br />
film together with (since deceased) venerable<br />
master Andrzej Wajda. In sprawling passages,<br />
Edelman recounts love stories from the ghetto,<br />
which Dylewska clothes in poetic images, combined<br />
adeptly with archival footage. A film about<br />
the power of love, which even in dark times is<br />
capable, if only for fleeting moments, of providing<br />
a sense of safety and comfort.<br />

Oleg kommt aus Lettland nach Belgien, um in<br />
einem Schlachthof zu arbeiten. Als er ungerechtfertigt<br />
für einen Arbeitsunfall verantwortlich<br />
gemacht wird, verliert er seine Stelle. Andrzej<br />
bietet ihm einen Ausweg: neuer Job, neuer Pass,<br />
neue Freunde und bald auch Bezahlung. Besonders<br />
tückisch ist jedoch die Abhängigkeit, auf die sich<br />
Oleg unwissentlich einlässt. Sämtliche Emanzipationsversuche<br />
enden doch wieder beim zunehmend<br />
labilen und kriminellen Andrzej. Mit einer<br />
immensen filmischen Nähe zu seiner Hauptfigur<br />
vermittelt Juris Kursietis das Gefühl der Heimatund<br />
Ausweglosigkeit eines jungen Mannes, den das<br />
Schicksal an seine Grenzen treibt. (tg)<br />
Oleg leaves Latvia for Belgium to work in a slaughterhouse.<br />
Unfortunately, he is fired after being<br />
unfairly blamed for an accident on the job. Andrzej<br />
offers him a way out of his predicament: a new<br />
job, new passport, new friends and the promise<br />
of payment to follow soon. More significant than<br />
all that, however, is the dependent relationship<br />
that Oleg unconsciously enters into by agreeing<br />
to the deal. All attempts at self-emancipation find<br />
him right back again with increasingly unstable<br />
and criminal Andrzej. With its intense cinematic<br />
proximity to its protagonist, Juris Kursietis’ film<br />
brilliantly conveys the desperation and rootlessness<br />
of a young man pushed to his limits by fate.<br />
